BYOBYB: Off-Day Open Thread
It's the last off-day on the regular season schedule. After today, it's 13 straight games to the end of the season, 10 of which will be against the White Sox and Twins. The Tigers won the finale of their weekend series at Minnesota, preventing this from becoming an Off-Day Therapy open thread.
Detroit has a three-game lead in the AL Central. Their magic number to clinch is 11. So how are you feeling about the rest of this season?
Let's do some "BYOBYB," the open thread where you can discuss anything you'd like. Possible topics could include:
- Should Jim Leyland just make Ryan Raburn the full-time left fielder?
- Would you like to see Alex Avila get some at-bats as the DH against right-handed pitching?
- Has Nate Robertson already pitched his way into a possible postseason rotation, if a fourth starter is necessary?
Are you interested in a possible BYB Meet-Up next season? If so, post a comment in our thread and weigh in on a possible date. And if you're new to the BYB neighborhood, say hello in our Introduce Yourself thread.
Of course, with the White Sox and Twins beginning a three-game series tonight, this might also turn into something of a GameThread for that.
It's up to you, BYB Bunch. Enjoy your off-day!

Go...um...Sox?
So many times this year I would see them playing each other have to stop and find out who was ahead of who. Hopefully the Sox sweep them at home…but at the same time…let’s not let them get TOO much confidence from it…
I'm interested to see
what this rookie Hudson has to offer. He’s only 22 yrs old and is making his 1st ML start. I hope the Sox take two of three and beat up the Twins ‘pen a bit. Just as long as the Twins don’t sweep, I’m happy.
Then again, if the Tigers take care of business in Cleveland, it won’t matter all that much.
Looking forward to the game
on MLB.com, It’s nearly as important as a Tiger game right now, plus I won’t have to get that sickly feeling if things don’t go our way. A victory by the Sox is a bonus tonight.

It is nice to watch a game where that sickly feeling is impossible to get. Watched Cubs-Cards last night just for the fun of watching baseball, although I didn’t care about the outcome.

Some thoughts
- Should Jim Leyland just make Ryan Raburn the full-time left fielder?
No. We will not win the playoffs if Carlos is not hitting.
Let him play and he will find his groove. His upside is still WAY HIGHER
that Raburn (against RHP). Carlos was clutch in ’06 playoffs (our most
consistent hitter) and I think he can get close to that.
* Would you like to see Alex Avila get some at-bats as the DH against right-handed pitching?
Only in the rare case that Cabrera gets a day off, in which case Aubrey can play 1b
and Avila DH. Otherwise, Aubrie is the veteran hitter that needs to hit if we are
to make noise. Let him play and find his groove (see above w.r.t. Guillen).
I would, however, like to see Avila play more as a C against RHP. Laird has been
tremendous, but against teams like the White Sox, KC, Indians who do not run that
much, let Avila play!!! I understand why Laird would play against Minnesota.
* Has Nate Robertson already pitched his way into a possible postseason rotation, if a fourth starter is necessary?
If he stays healthy, then yes. I think he has the potential to be #3.
He has the experience and Porcello’s arm has been used way more
than it ever has. Yankees have tons of left handed hitters and Yankee
stadium will be tough on a youngster (no matter how mature he is).
Note that I am assuming that Wash is not going to pitch. If Wash pitches,
then Robertson will be used out of the pen, IMHO.
I agree re: Carlos - we really need him

Carlos
I agree we need him—but it doesn’t follow that we need him in left field.
Even though I am familiar with the theories of Professor Sheffield, I don’t necessarily agree that playing the field is crucial to hitting well (and I’m sure it varies from player to player).
Carlos ’09 in LF (126 PA): .202 .302 .404 .705
Carlos ’09 as DH (139 PA): .254 .338 .369 .707
The real choice may end up being not Raburn vs Carlos, but Raburn vs Huff—in other words vs a RHP do you play Carlos in LF and DH Huff, or do you play Raburn in LF and DH Carlos. I would have gone with the latter until recently, but now that Huff is starting to hit that changes things. I’d go with Carlos over Huff at DH though, unless there’s a specific pitcher match-up issue. (For one thing Huff must be an awful baserunner; Lamont might as well just put on a red vest that says STOP when he gets on base).
At this point in the season I’d rather have Raburn vs RHP than Clete.
Magic Numbers
“Detroit has a three-game lead in the AL Central. Their magic number to clinch is 11. So how are you feeling about the rest of this season?”
I feel quite confident that we will win the division (except sometimes when I’m in the process of actually watching us play…then I’m anxious…)
Our magic number is 11. The juggernaut that is the New York Yankees has a magic number of 9. As in only 2 games lower than ours. Is anyone here seriously considering that Yankees won’t win the East? Well our odds aren’t all that much worse.
Hmmm...which feed to watch?
I generally prefer to watch the feed of the team that I want to win, but I can’t stand Hawk.

All part of the obnoxious charm of U.S. Cellular Field, I suppose
I like fireworks, but they belong after the game, not every time your team hits a home run, especially in a launching pad like the Cell.
I elected to go with Hawk. If he gets too unbearable, I can always switch to Dick Bremer and Bert Blyleven.

Ozzie's longstanding unabashed love for the "pirahnas" is strange.
The Sox have a far more contentious and nasty history with the Twins than they do with us.
