Tigers Win! Game 154 Afterglow
How often does a game turn around like that?
The Tigers fell behind 5-0 after four innings, and it was looking bleak. Nate Robertson was looking like the pitcher we all feared he really was. And when was this team going to score a run again?
But then something clicked. Detroit began to chip away with a Miguel Cabrera solo homer in the fifth. And that apparently broke the seal, because from there, the runs and hits just kept coming. 11 more runs and 17 more hits, to be exact.
Tigers beat the White Sox 12-5! Full recap to come. But for now, enjoy the afterglow... and maybe, just maybe, a turning point for this team.

totally unrelated to Tigers but...
Ichiro was ejected for the first time ever tonight. Apparently he disagreed with the strike zone after being called out on 3 pitches, so he used his bat to draw a diagram for the ump. I think that is a great way to get tossed.

Granderson has never been ejected
Neither has Inge. Polanco has been ejected three times in his career (twice last year). Everett’s never been ejected. Gerald Laird has been ejected twice (both last year). This is fun. I like looking up the seemingly “mild-mannered” guys.

Hee hee
Ramon Santiago and Edwin Jackson have never been ejected.
Magglio has been ejected three times in his career, but not since 2003.
Justin Verlander has been ejected once (I remember that game. It was against the Indians in ‘07, but he wasn’t pitching in that game).
I thought this was interesting: Pudge (who is not mild-mannered) was ejected once in 1993, and then wasn’t ejected again until 2001. However, he has been ejected at least once every year since 2001 (though he’s gotta get a move on if he’s gonna continue that trend this year).

Carlos Guillen has been ejected twice in his career, once in ’04 and once in ’05.
Fernando Rodney has never been ejected.
Miguel Cabrera has never been ejected.
Marcus Thames has been ejected once (last year). And his middle name is Markley.

when I was in high school
There was a guy who graduated in my class who everyone called “Trip.” We all knew it was a nickname, but it wasn’t until all our full names were read at graduation that we realized his first and middle names were “Wesley Delwyn” and he was a Third. His family was Welsh originally and it was a family name.
No wonder he went by Trip. It was a lot simpler. :)

true
I was just thinking the other day, where this team was in 2003, and now this is their second real pennant race. They have gone from almost historically bad craptacular-ness to a respectable team, with regular winning records and everything. When I thought about the number of teams that descend to levels of horrible and never, never get out (Pittsburgh Pirates), it’s pretty amazing that the team has actually built something worth watching instead of staying bad.

So often fans (and maybe management, too) just kind of assume that after a team is bad for a while, they get high draft picks and develop players and then naturally improve – but so often a team gets bad and just sticks there, sometimes for a very, very long time. To actually get out of such a deep hole is an accomplishment.
The Tigers have their weak spots and ups and downs, but the team is respectable now and far from being a joke. It’s something that a lot of fans would really like to see in their teams and haven’t yet.

I remember that
But Alexander was 11-0 I think, so he did what they got him for. I remember the race with Toronto that year – there was a series split I think, and after that I don’t remember the Blue Jays winning another game for the rest of the year, including a final series with Detroit. There was a lot of talk about how the one-game playoff would work if there was a tie at the end of the year.

I avoided getting in fights myself, but was witness to several. Sox fans who started the game nice (when they were winning) grew spiteful when we went ahead, saying that we’d get swept by the Yankees anyway. It might be my sister.
I apologize on her behalf.

does your sister say "LOL" and " at least once before/after an actual sentence?
if so, it’s her. please make it stop.

Sorry.
I only meant it in the “she adores Rick too” sense.

at least you can understand their taste
But no way do they know the stats like you do. If you listen closely, I’ll bet you can hear their airheaded giggles through the computer.

that was pretty bleep-infested
I can see why, though. Since he wanted to actually play the major league players against the Tigers in an attempt to make the pennant race no easier than it had to be, he has to be ticked off that he might have actually gotten better effort from the minor leaguers.

middle-aged white men in suits
Should never, never try to be cool by using words like “sick” to mean good, like the kids do. It doesn’t work with a tie.
And with Ozzie’s frustrated bleeps echoing in my ears, I am off – and hoping for more bleeps tomorrow, too. :)

But I am already sad
I work until 5:00 tomorrow, which means I’ll almost undoubtedly miss the game

Has there ever been an afterglow overflow? It has a nice ring to it.

WOO!
AND the Wolverine’s won…Penn State lost…tis a good day indeed.
Now if only Ohio State, the Twins and the Yankees had lost..I think it would have been nearly perfect

Twins can't figure out how to score less than 8 or 9 runs.
It’s not so bad that OSU won. As a Michigan fan hoping UM stay undefeated (a stretch, I know), I’d like OSU to also win out until the big one so that a win over the Buckeyes has some value in the voters eyes.

330+ comments, this has probably already been said, but......
If all of the games are like this from here on out, I’m going to be exhausted come that certain part of the year where 22 teams stop playing…….
