Game 156: Twins @ Tigers -- POSTPONED

Sorry, folks.  Tonight's opener between the Tigers and Twins has been postponed.

The weather has been cold, windy, and rainy all day in southeastern Michigan (and throughout the state).  So the chances of playing tonight's game never looked all that good.  At least they got in the pre-game ceremony (though no one appeared to be comfortable in those conditions).

There will be a doubleheader tomorrow.  The first game will be played at 12 noon, and the second will be played at 7 p.m.  Both times Eastern.

As Tom Petty put it, the waiting is the hardest part.  We'll see you in about 16 hours.

I was at the 2006 NY-Detroit rain delay game

that they called off after making us wait 3 hours. As I recall it was the turning point in the series. Let’s hope this becomes a pattern.

I'd love to call in sick tomorrow

But I was on vacation all last week, and still have to get things back organized. I’m going to be so braindead.

Yeah, maybe I should've just changed the front post...

Except SBN might end up deleting it anyway because GameThreads are separate from story posts. Oh, this is so complicated now.

There is a lot of good scared stress there! If the thread is erased, it all goes back into our bodies and makes us even more nervous. If the thread is still there, then the stress stays there, too. :)

Chet Lemon Re-post

(For an ornery ol’ guy I take instruction well…)
….

Chet had his spleen removed shortly after retiring, and now coaches junior baseball in Florida—I’m not sure how he is healthwise, or what happens when you go about spleenless

BUT he does have a son Marcus who is in the Rangers minor league system, so there may be a future Lemon to follow!

Here’s a pic of Marcus with mom and dad…

spleen has an important function in immunity

So maybe he doesn’t travel any more than he has to in cold and flu season.

Can’t simulate a rained out game.

One thing I wish the MLB powers that be could fix, is having the W.S. extend all the way until the very end of October or early November (like it did last year). You play a long grueling 162 game schedule, which doesn’t even include an offseason free agent signing period and a month of spring training, just to play your most important games in inclmate weather. Just doesn’t seem right. Last years W.S. was heavily affected by weather in the games in Philly.

Saw that some jackass from Twinkie Town...

took it upon himself to say that there wouldn’t be much effect on the crowd size tomorrow since no Detroiters have jobs.

CRAM IT.

We’ve heard all the Detroit jokes. They aren’t funny, pal. Let’s just watch baseball and leave the civic insults out of it. We’re not eight year olds.

Now that I got that off my chest, two quotes (in the spirit of Ian’s citing Tom Petty) for what’s going on tomorrow:

“It’s a great day to take two”. My high school baseball coach.

“Nobody gives it to you. You have to take it”. Jack Nicholson in The Departed.

It will be very interesting

Playing early and late season games outdoors. I wonder how many off-days they will lose and if they are going to have any “home” games moved to another park because of blizzards?

Did they not even consider a roof, or rule it out because it was too expensive? I don’t remember all the details of the negotiations.

I don't know this to be true....

but given their cost-cutting acumen, I’m sure the roof proved too expensive.

A Minnesota fan's p.o.v.

Honestly I think that we’d been struggling to get a stadium passed for so long that we were willing to ignore a few (HUGE) problems. Also, I’m pretty sure the state legislature expected Pohlad (may he Not rest in peace) to contribute more. The biggest problem that I see is they’re not even building it to be retractable roof compatible. That way in a couple of years once they see that we have snow in April and May they could’ve put a roof on, but sadly they didn’t.

I’m ‘marginally’ excited about Target field. Though I wish they’d do something classy and name it after Wellstone or Mondale like they did with the Humphrey-dome!

everything has to be named after some g.d. corporation nowadays

I was living in the Baltimore area when the Ravens’ new stadium was built, and the public outcry about the corporate name of “PSINet Stadium” was incredible – it didn’t help that the stadium was replacing Memorial Stadium, which had the names of veterans on the facade as a tribute, and that it took about a year to get the naming rights sold, so everyone had gotten used to calling it just “Ravens Stadium.” Then Johnny Unitas died and the lines of people waiting to view him stretched for blocks, and it took hours for people to get in and pay their respects, and the ownership could have endeared itself to the fans forever if they went with “Johnny Unitas Memorial Stadium,” but instead they sold the rights to a bank in Buffalo NY. :(

we know it isn't everyone

It just gets tiring hearing the same old stuff, when the whole country is suffering economically. It’s pretty cold to make cracks like that when if the person making it doesn’t have a family member or friend in the same fix, they should be down on their knees every day thanking whatever deity they believe in that the people they care about are employed right now – because they might not be in another week – instead of indulging in hurtful gallows humour.

It’s a minority, but unfortunately (as is so often) a loud and annoying one. Hope you and yours are well, at least.

One final point

This, this right here is why I won’t mind if the Tigers end up winning the division. Talking to Tigers fans is like having a level conversation with someone you disagree with but can get along with. Talking with White Sox fans is like Keith Olbermann going after Glenn Beck. Things devolve too quickly and we forget that we’re talking about a game!

Best of luck to the Tigers and moreso best of luck to everyone in this economy. I’m a theatre artist and things are never good for us, but especially so in this economy.

But, all that being said…GO TWINS!!!

Being in class during a game is not as bad as being at work or in lab

In class, I have my iPod that I can take a look at (unless there’s an exam, of course). I can’t use it in lab because we’re not allowed to use cell phones or “electronic devices” even though there’s quite a bit of downtime (It’s considered “unprofessional”). And there’s no wifi at work, so the only way I can check on a game is if a pharmacist needs to give me internet access for some work-related reason or if I sneak off to the restroom with my mini-radio.

During the pregame show for the last game in Cleveland

As they were going to commercial or doing a promo, there was a shot of Don Kelly holding a baby (belonging to one of the fans at the railing, I assume). Cabrera (who was nowhere in the shot to begin with) came rushing over and started making weird faces at the baby. It was really funny.

Being the pessimist that I am...

I thought so too, on first blush. But anything that gets Mauer off the field (he’ll likely DH the second game) is a help. It’s probably a push. I’m sure both team just want to get the thing started.

I've settled on this theory

The Twins have to win the opener. If they don’t, oh, they will be looking down the barrel of a gun in the nightcap.

probably.

I just am thinking that way to make myself feel better. It isn’t really working.

Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun...

Reminds me of a great song line:

Now then Mardy Bum
I see your frown
And it’s like looking down the barrel of a gun
And it goes off
And out come all these words
Oh there’s a very pleasant side to you
A side I much prefer…
 -Arctic Monkeys

“And it goes off / And out come all these words…” priceless

Well, I'm off to bed

Long day tomorrow. Class, then work. And this nerve-wracking doubleheader through all of it. Eeeeeesh.

Well, I'm off to school

I am so terrified right now. I’ll try to follow the game on my iPod during Human Interactions in Healthcare. One thing’s for certain: I won’t learn a thing about cultural competency today.

I can't help it

I keep thinking of the 2007 Rockies. Rick needs to help me banish such visions from my head.
