Tigers Win! Game 157 Afterglow

It's just never easy, is it?  Why even bother thinking it could be?

The Tigers built a 5-0 lead behind two-run doubles from Magglio Ordonez and Brandon Inge, and a fierce effort from Justin Verlander.  But you knew the Twins had a rally in them.  Because they never go away.  Minnesota chipped away at the lead with two runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

Curtis Granderson restored a two-run cushion with a leadoff homer.  He ended up giving that run back, however, by badly misjudging a Nick Punto drive to left-center field.  The ball went over Grandy's head, driving in Delmon Young.  But Fernando Rodney got Denard Span to fly out to left field to close out a win the Tigers badly needed.

Detroit restores its two-game lead in the AL Central, and reduces its magic number to four.  Tiger Town finds balance and relief.  For tonight, anyway.

Tigers win, 6-5!  Full recap tomorrow.  It's been a long day.  But for now, enjoy the afterglow!

I watched bits and pieces of both games

First game I saw through the top of the 4th on gameday during my lecture, then had a class where I don’t use my laptop so no gameday, then saw the 10th (tears) on TV. Second game I saw until the 3rd or 4th and then had a meeting at 8 but took my laptop with me and followed on gameday and came back to watch the end on TV. So that’s how my day went. hah.

Carl Pavano

He sucks.

I know he’s done well against the Tigers, but they should batter him tomorrow.

Carl Pavano looks like Matt Garza

The Tigers usually hit Matt Garza pretty well. Maybe we can hypnotize them into thinking they’re facing Matt Garza?

Carl Pavano

13-11, 4.86 ERA.

The Tigers should/need to jump all over him

by ThaWalrus9 on Sep 29, 2009 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

You forget...

Carl “Tiger Killer” Pavano. He owns us. It’s the only reason the Twins picked him up.

by john.kmiecik on Sep 29, 2009 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Luck adjusted, that ERA should be 4.04 (his FIP)

Pavano hasn’t been horrid this year, he’s merely gotten unlucky.

This was a good day for the boys.

Took two steps closer to the prize, the bats were alive, starters were magnificent. The confidence level is soaring in the Tiger clubhouse.

Seriously?

I appreciate your loyalty but today seems like it started off by leaving men on base and ended with almost blowing it. And it wasn’t pretty in between. There’s no excuse to not give Porcello more than ONE RUN of support!

We’re 2 steps closer, that is true, but we gotta answer the call against a pitcher who is in our heads tomorrow, which kinda sucks.

Crap, is Soria injured?

The Royals had Farnworth trying to close out a 3-2 game against the Yankees, and he’s blown it.

I checked the Royals website

No mention of it there. Although Soria did get a two-inning save against Minnesota. Maybe Trey Hillman wanted to rest him.

Take one more from the Twins, one from Chicago, Greinke wins, and there’s the pennant, right?

Didn’t Rodney have a blown save though? Wonder how that game turned out.

The funny thing is

Rodney didn’t pitch all that badly in that game. He gave up a leadoff triple in a one-run game, but if I remember correctly, Clete kinda played it into a triple.

Good piece of news from the White Sox.

Bad news from the White Sox

Peavy on Friday, due to today’s rainout.

by rook34 on Sep 29, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Peavy is the kind of right handed power pitcher that just kills us.

But I doubt he can be as good as he was on Friday. That was criminal.

His K/BB ratio is 22 against the Tigers.

Yes. 22. Next closest for him is 8 against the Yankees.

by john.kmiecik on Sep 29, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to bet against streaks.

There is no reason for him to keep beating the hell out of us. He is an average major league pitcher this year. That’s an improvement over his previous status of Massive Waste of Talent.

by rook34 on Sep 29, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

He's damn near always been average

2004 was his only good year, he’s been in the league since 1998 (taking off 2006… what happened there)?

Yet we CAN’T. SOLVE. HIM. Annoying.

I don't know what's worse.

Had it not rained today, we would have dodged Peavy.

It's really hard to say

The hard stats say we’d rather see Buehrle, but he’s got a knack for annoying starts at bad times for us.

I do not like to make predictions on individual players.

But at some point this weekend, Thamesy is going to hit a big home run for this team.
He’s much more selective, and he’s getting good swings. It’s a mattter of time.

ESPN is making stuff up again

From their game preview:

Bonine lost his only start against the Twins on July 2 at the Metrodome as Mauer’s hit sparked a five-run third inning in a 7-0 win.

The Tigers were off on July 2. Bonine hasn’t started against Minnesota this year.

ESPN is useless.

I guess they are pretty accurate about football, but I don’t like football so I can’t judge. They certainly talk about it enough.

who does check their facts?

ESPN on tv showed Zack Greinke’s stats this season against the Twins last week. He was like 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA … before meeting them for the first time all season.

In two games, the Tigers held Joe Mauer to one hit. That’s pretty impressive. Now, if they could just stop with the wild pitches.

but huff absolutely stinks… we need Carlos to bat behind Biggy. Huff is no protection for him and If Leyland puts Clete in front of Biggy tonight, I swear i will jump out of my bleacher seat, run into the dugout and strangle him. Maggs must be in the Lineup tonight. His #’s are the best in the AL in September. Period.

It Should look like this:

1. grandy CF
2. Polly 2B
3. Maggs RF
4. Biggy 1B
5. Carlos DH
6. Raburn LF
7. Inge 3B
8. G$ C
