BYOBYB: Friday Open Thread

I don't know how many people are sticking around on this holiday weekend (the last one we'll have for a while), so we'll do some BYOBYB for the rest of the afternoon.
You're free to post whatever's on your mind, so if you feel the need to share about missed connections or an old piece of pizza you ate, this is the preferred place to do it. What are your Labor Day weekend plans? Any favorite cookout foods?
Here are some possible Tigers-related topics to bat around:
- What are your expectations for this weekend's series with the Rays? One out of three? A series win?
- Has Nate Robertson earned a spot in the Tigers' starting rotation?
- Are you much into Power Rankings? (I, myself, am not.) Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown has the Tigers #11.
- Who will be the next Tiger to wear one of those new protective batting helmets? Will Carlos Guillen try it on again?
And with that, we'll see you later tonight. Do you have pennant fever yet?

The apologist in me is quite happy for Nasty Nate!
I am just glad that he has been productive, and not ran out of town on a pitch fork.
Also, as I don’t work on Fridays now, I have spent the morning watching some telly. ESPN showed NO highlights of yesterdays game, but they had a wonderful story about check swINGE. CHECK it out.
"Without deviation from the norm, 'progress' is not possible."
Nice opening sign!
Yes, I have the fever!! The sweep of the Indians was like the eye opener. I know it’s just the Indians, but our guys looked connected. I am going camping this weekend, but have my ’puter in the trailer and we have free wifi. So I will be watching on mlb.tv.
Tammy
Oh, and I am happy for Nate too.
He kinda brings that ’06 feel back. If we can get Bondo back, that would be sooo cool!

Nate
I say we get Nate back into the rotation and go six deep once Washy gets back. Why not have a six-man rotation? Then we could save our top guys arms for the playoffs.
I love power rankings. If I see a link to power rankings on ESPN.com or SI.com I immediately click it.
The six man rotation may be a good idea
Either that, or shut down Kid Rick for a couple games against tougher teams (or move him to the bullpen for a while).

Anybody try a Fifth-Third Burger?
Or seen anybody try to eat one? I want to shake hands with somebody whose eaten one.
I have not had one
but I was in the crowd for the taping of Man V. Food where the guy ate one. I will for sure be on TV, seeing as I was front-row. It is a monster burger, but it actually looked pretty tasty.
BTW, that episode should be on soon. Look for it, should be all about Grand Rapids.

Oh, darn. I guess the episode is just a "Baseball Special". Not about Grand Rapids.
September 30 is the air date.

Yeah, he seemed like a pretty good guy in person.
He was fun even when the cameras weren’t around.

I have a huge man crush on Adam Richman
My wife has a huge regular crush on him, I think
I'm just jealous.
What a job. The fact that he is paid for this is ridiculous.

i am going to try one in a few weeks
i’m coming down there because Michigan Tech plays Ferris state in the ballpark on Oct 3rd. anyone in the area could come and watch football (i know it’s not as good as baseball) and maybe even see the second best feeling in the world, the Huskies Pep Band.)
I Like Pie
I haven't eaten one
but I was at a Whitecaps game last Friday evening, and two different guys in my section each had one. Neither attempted to it eat alone — they served portions to all their friends. Looked pretty good.
Rotation
I have little to no faith in Galarraga right now, and I’m loving what Nate’s done the last few weeks in Toledo and now with the big club. I think this rotation looks like the best in the Central:
1. Verlander
2. Jackson
3. Porcello
4. Washburn
5. Robertson
We could have Galarraga in long relief (a step up from Miner), and a bullpen of Bondo, Fien, Perry, Ni, Seay, Lyon, and Rodney. I’m liking the way our pitching is shaping up.
A lifelong Tigers fan
That's a damn fine rotation
We shouldn’t entirely count on Nate being completely back, but that’s a strong top-4.

I opted out of going to the lake this weekend
so I’ll just be hanging out and watching games, per usual. planning to go see Extract tonight!
jason bateman is the main attraction to it
I love him. JK simmons, whom I met at one of the games in anaheim, is in it too and he’s awesome.
I'm sure Bateman is good
but the movie just looked so-so. The trailers did nothing for me, and Rotten Tomatoes is basically confirming my feelings.

yeah. we'll see I guess :)
a friend is DYING to go, and I have nothing else to do so whatevs. I tried to talk her into waiting til tomorrow morning as the local AMC theater is only $4 on weekends before noon, but no go.
Friends can make any movie good.
Except perhaps that Sandra Bullock movie coming out. I think I would gouge out my sensory organs during that one.

I love Jason Bateman
I am hoping this is a good one.
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

Ever since Arrested Development
I’ve been a fan of Bateman. Just found out that they are filming an Arrested Development movie. Nice.
I'm excited for it too.
Michael Cera originally opted out of being in the movie. Making up excuses like “Real fans don’t want a movie…”
That guy has really turned into an asshole since Juno.
Nonetheless, I’m pretty sure he’s on board now.
Tell us how it is
It looks okay, but I’m only looking forward to Jennifer’s Body and Zombieland this year.

This weekend's prediction's
We have Verlander going tonight and Jackson on Sunday. I am hoping it’s not too much to ask to take two out of three in a series that these 2 pitch in. Still, if you look at this 6 game road trip I can live with 3-3 (assuming the Twins continue their road struggles).

i think we can take at least two of three from the rays.
yeah they’re struggling, but we’re fighting too. that homestand, plus ernie’s new illness, should fire up the players to not just make the postseason, but to win it all for ernie.
also, as a multi-sport fan, only the NBA/NHL power rankings on Yahoo are any good. and even then they are sometimes suspect, but not nearly as bad as the baseball ones…

I'm too busy to be bored right now.
Trying to finish stuff up before the long weekend. At least the most irritating cockroach of a coworker I have ever had the displeasure of sharing a workplace with has stayed out of my way today for the most part.
(I’m also trying to get a head start on the next couple weeks because I am actually taking a real honest-to-god vacation for the first time in years – instead of taking long weekends off to run errands and do yardwork and paint walls and stuff. :)

I'll be heading up north ...
walking the Bridge on Monday. 11th year in a row.
some day we'll fence off that bridge to keep the trolls off it! ;)
But seriously, it sounds fun, I’ve always wanted to do that myself. Enjoy yourself!

The Scout.com site for the Tigers minors
had a nice story about Erie shortstop Cale Iorg, with very high praise from a lot of scouts and minor league managers. It’s a good read.
this may sound completely ignorant, but
why do they charge for access to all the scout.com sites? it seems silly to me.
I dunno, but it's not a bad idea
they probably make more money than newspapers, who are finding the free thing to be a killer.
Of course it takes them out of the conversation quite often because most people don’t have the interest in the subject matter to pay for their offering. (I tell you, I am very much in favor of ala carte. I’d pay 15, 20 cents for an article of interest.)
But they do offer a premium, valuable and unique service for those interested.
anyway, I’m glad this article was free. I have always been curious about Iorg’s paradox, so it’s nice to see something written about it.

is there a way to tell which articles on there are free?
I would frequent it more if I knew where to go, I don’t have the patience to go back and sift through everything in hopes of being able to read something. I am interested in what’s going on down at the farm, but I can’t afford to pay for it.. I already have to consider saving up for mlb.tv next year, ha.
Plus if you're going to pay
You’re better off with Baseball America.
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
good point.
maybe I can get my dad to split an account somewhere. shit like that drives me insane, wanting to know stuff and not having access. CURSE YOU INTERNETS
yeah
but someone should get paid for taking the time to research and write. Advertising in the online age just doesn’t pay the bills.
by Kurt Mensching on Sep 4, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions
oh I completely understand that
I’ve never been paid a cent for anything I’ve written, aside from perks like getting into concerts and stuff.. I wish it were easier to make that happen!
I just wondered why that site, out of all of them, has a fee.
my guess
Scout.com was already a successful for-pay recruiting site for HS football/basketball information and it expanded into other areas using the same financial model. I wonder if there’s enough market there as far as for-pay Tigers minor league info goes. But more power to them if it works.
I wish the journalism industry would have figured this out long ago!

There's one key to Iorg's development
Plate discipline. If he can cut down on the K’s and up the BB’s, he’ll be a superstar. I’m not entirely sure that will happen, but the giant turnaround in Iorg’s defense (Baseball America had him as our 3B in 2011) shows he’s got the work ethic to give it a strong shot.

Starting this holiday weekend off right, heading over to my parents house, they have the baseball package…otherwise no ability to watch the game in Columbus, Ohio..love watching the first place Tigers 50inch HDTV style…..Verlander and Jackson?? hopefully we are not too far ahead of our selves…but why wouldnt one expect 2 out of 3…only problem is if we dont hit…Tomorrow is also a great day in BIG TEN country…the yearly ass kicking of all the cupcakes the big ten starts their season with every year…GO BUCKS!!….
imagine polly with the new helmet.....
Wow. I would take a spilt roadie. The rays are tiugh in the dome, and they should be deperate. Jv is our best hope for a winner this weekend. The pitching schedule point to a zach-jv battle on thursday…wow.

What do you guys think about that new S100 batting helmet that just came out?
I saw Guillen wearing it during his first two times up yesterday and thought he looked like a clown. Rod and Mario even made fun of it and said he looked like the Great Gazoo (which he honestly did). By the third time Carlos came up he even switched back to his regular helmet. I’m for increased safety and all, but they look absolutely ridiculous.
Crappy day
6 o clock can’t come fast enough.
Gonna go to the cow chip festival, hopefully that restores my faith in…ummm…whatever it is exactly that I’m all pissed off at.
Free concert from the old lead singer of Styx, Dennis DeYoung, that should be fun…
