Game 136 Post-Gamer: Afterglow or Shame?

We'll have a full recap later tonight, but until then, you can chat about today's Tigers-Rays game right here.  Are you basking in afterglow or wallowing in shame?

So that Wade Davis kid looked pretty good, eh?  No wonder Tampa felt they could trade Edwin Jackson last winter.  Meanwhile, Jackson pitched pretty well against his former team.

Did the Tigers do it again to that Rays bullpen?  Or did Evan Longoria find yet another way to beat Detroit?

More later this evening.  Thanks for spending part of a fun weekend here!

Biggest mistake...thank you Madden

Was his decision to take our Cormier, who was in a GREAT rhythm and dealing.
Balfour came in, walked Cabbi and then trouble started.
Madden went by the stats: Cabbit was great against Cormier, bad against Balfour.

Lesson: Sometime you go with the game’s rhythm (like Leyland does) and not
by looking at numbers, which are insensitive to what is going on in the heat of a battle

by Tigersin2010 on Sep 6, 2009 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

Momentum really is underrated

I wish there was a way to better quantify it statistically.

by frisbeepilot on Sep 6, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

too iffy, though

I’m happy with some things being unquantifiable. A completely deterministic universe is boring.

The second that baseball becomes deterministic...

…I’ll be up on top of the tallest building in town, looking for a place to jump. But I don’t forsee that happening, ever… after all, I watched Game 1 of the ’88 World Series and, well, I rest my case.

by frisbeepilot on Sep 6, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Madden plays it deterministically

He is the stat master. And it cost him this series

Monty Burns played it deterministically

by frisbeepilot on Sep 6, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I so love the Shedd.

I went there a few years ago when my sister was still living in the area, before she left her job for graduate school, and spent a lot of time there – quite a bit of it eye-to-eye with the Komodo monitor named Faustus they had on display at the time. Impressive, impressive animal.

I love how the penguin next to it looks so protective.

Places like that are such fabulous places to get kids (and adults) excited about science, that it makes sense to really emphasize the educational mission by teacher and student perks. Especially now when so many schools are cutting back on field trips because of the economy.

Disagree with Kmann about this being the most important series

Not to call you out, my friend. I just didn’t think anyone would notice if I posted this response way up there.

I don’t think there was any series more important than the one in late July, when the White Sox had just tied the Tigers, and we were wondering if we’d come out of the series still in first place, and the Tigers won the first three out of the 4 game set against Chicago, including sweeping a doubleheader. This team really hasn’t looked back since, keeping the lead pretty steady through August, and now stomping on the accelerator in September.

I'm not playing the middle here but...

I agree that the CWS series was huge and I think the team turned a corner that week.

The thing about this series is that they appear to be starting to play like they mean to win the whole thing- not just the AL Central. To win this road series with come-from-behind scoring again and again is just huger than huge.

by murrajo on Sep 6, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they are both important

And equally so, because they come at such different times in the season. In July, it was a series that pointed out the Tigers could actually get into the playoffs – this series is indicative that not only can they make the playoffs, but they may be able to actually do some damage when they get there.

I don’t think either is more important than the other, but they are each crucial at different points in the season. It’s such a long season there isn’t just one turning point, I don’t believe.

by Baroque on Sep 6, 2009 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I was seeing importance as playoff odds importance.

This series could create enough “heat” for us to win playoff games, and in that sense, I consider it at least equally important to the CWS series.

I attended the third game in that series. That was a good wake-up call. This just looks awfully important to me at the moment.

I don't have a signature.

It’s fun to watch them having fun playing. You can tell they don’t ever think they are out of a game, either – they always felt that way at home, but if they can develop that same confidence on the road …
