Off-Topic: January

I saw this at Fear The Fin, actually. I know I came down pretty hard on making sure everyone remains discussing the topic at hand. But I didn't really provide a place for people to talk about whatever they want. I know the Off Topic threads are pretty popular around these parts, so I don't want to take them away.

Thus: Off Topic: January.

Talk about whatever you want. We'll bump this to the top as necessary and provide a new off-topic post every month. If it gets too many comments, we'll provide a second post.

Enjoy!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff.

Conan’s monologs/show have been KILLING it though since it came out. Just amazing humor. He had one tonight about what “NBC is doing to make the winter games better” and he had a quip of “Replacing the flags on all slalom poles with breached contracts.”

Had me rolling.

I love how Letterman and Kimmel have Conan's back.

Personally I hope Conan ends up at a different network. NBC really doesn’t deserve his awesomeness.

I never really watched the Tonight Show,

but if Conan leaves NBC, I will definitely miss his 30 Rock cameos. Hopefully, they will still make cracks about him even if he’s off the network. “Who is Conan O’Brien? And why is she so sad?” Priceless. At least they’ll still have Brian Williams.

Also, what happened to Joel Goddard? His appearances were twisted and hilarious. Did they just decide not to bring him over to 11:35 or did he have enough?

by awm on Jan 19, 2010 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

It doesn't matter to me whether Conan hosts the Tonight Show or not

I just want Jay Leno around in some fashion. I don’t care if it’s at 10:00, 11:35, or 3:27 in the morning. I love his Headlines segment.

by SabreRoseTiger on Jan 14, 2010 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

That's interesting, because I always thought Letterman got that bit from Johnny Carson...

…or so my family informed me (considering I was eight years old when Carson went off the air, I kinda had to take their word for it). I like Letterman’s “Small Town News,” but he only does it, like, once every six months as far as I can tell.

by SabreRoseTiger on Jan 14, 2010 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

I guess that makes me culturally irrelevant as well

I just don’t find Conan funny (except for the bits when he’s pretending to drive his desk and there’s a green screen behind it, but I haven’t seen him do that for years). Letterman’s okay, I suppose, though he’s gotta be the most random person I’ve ever seen.

Geez, no wonder I watch a lot of British stuff.

I absolutely love conan...

and I’ve always believed him to be one of the classiest guys in show biz and after reading his press release about the whole ordeal…I believe it to still be true.

A guy who goes from comedy writer to national tv host has to always stay true to himself to remain successful. Conan has obviously done that.

Whether you find him funny or not is your opinion, but ya gotta respect the guy for being so successful after coming out of literally no where.

The only thing on bass that I'm having trouble picking up is slap bass...

it’s the only technique I can’t get a hold of. I can do the raking, muting, thumb positioning—anything fingerstyle or pick really…I just can’t get the hang of slap bass. It’s sad because I have a riff or 2 that are ideal for slap.

I spent 7 years in band...

concert, symphonic, jazz, and marching band playing trumpet, mellowphone, and bass guitar. I don’t mean to flaunt my credentials but more or less to make a point that some of the best musicians and composers out there know absolutely nothing about musical theory. Knowing how to properly transpose from an Eb instrument to a Bb is pretty irrelevant in terms of making great music. Music is the most beautiful thing because it is interpreted by the listener and only the listener. If the listener thinks that a chord comprised of 3 conflicting notes is beautiful, than it has to be beautiful. In my opinion there is no ’general consensus of suckage" within the art world. As long as one person finds it endearing, than the artistry is successful.

just to describe 'em a bit...

looks wise they’re darker than typical strings which probably has something to do with the fact that they are like coated strings. (coated strings keep a longer life). They feel a little funny and have been tending to give me some extra nice callouses (i don’t play too much anymore so it’s not that hard really). Heres a screenshot from a vid of me playing earlier today. You can see the difference by comparing the bottom 4 strings to the the top most string. (i didn’t change that string. It’s non coated.) The bottom 4 are much darker.

Flatwound strings

Ever try those? A friend of mine has some on a fretless bass, and they’re super-easy on the fingers. (I’m not really good enough to play a fretless; I need the forgiveness that frets provide. Besides, I’m a drummer first and foremost.)

are they generally just for fretless or can they be used on a standard bass as well?

Monday, January 18 is MLK day. As I am currently employed to increase volunteer efforts within my community, I figured I would just tell you to be aware and mindful of what MLK day is all about. If you get a chance on the 18th, or any time for that matter, remember that it only takes a little effort to make a big difference in the life of your community. After all, don’t we all want to leave the world a better place than we found it? Alright, I’ll get off my soapbox and stop being preachy. On with the randomness of the off-topic thread!

I think the Red Wings - Yankees comparisons are overblown.

The Habs have more titles, the Rangers spent more but the Wings were dominant and had the resources to add a piece here or there.

by 13194013 on Jan 20, 2010 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

Booooooooooooooooooo. In a capped era, the Wings dominance hasn’t changed. And I will say they were more of a Theo Esptein-era Red Sox before the NHL implemented the cap. Yeah, they spent a lot of money but the front office was dynamite through and through (though they get too much credit for their European scouting because if you actually look, the number of “hits” are outweighed by like 4 times the number of “misses” from Europe).

And the A’s hat, if it’s green/yellow bill, is sexy. I want to start collecting 5950-style hats, but I look like a goon when I wear them.

Comedy Central would be perfect

Move Colbert to 10:30, have Stewart go from 11:00 to 11:35 and give Conan an hour starting at 11:35.

I think the first think Conan should say is...

F*** YOU NBC!

When he gets back on the air that is. He won’t say it but I think he should. With 2 fingers raised as well.

He can’t. Clause in his buy-out that he can’t talk bad about NBC.

that is dumb.

he can talk bad about NBC on NBC but he can’t elsewhere?

by madpoopz on Jan 26, 2010 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that’s what I’ve heard anyways. It makes sense. Conan’s ratings were through the roof his last 10 days there and clauses like that once someone leaves isn’t that out of the norm. For instance, I know there are restaurants that won’t let their managers leave to manage another restaurant within X Miles of their current restaurant.

Beating a dead horse:

Dave Cameron wonders, like I do, about the lack of interest in Damon. If it would only take $4-5MM to sign Damon, I don’t see why we couldn’t make him fit. Show Seay and Miner the door if we really need the funds.

Every rumored team has apparently dropped out, except for the Yankees, who suggest they only have $2MM left.

I wouldn't mind Damon...

more or less insurance for Guillen. Damon can’t be any worse defensively than Guillen can he?

by madpoopz on Jan 26, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

I guess I hadn’t realized how much is defense had been stable the last few years (09 seems to be the outlier). I was thinking he was more in Bobby Abreu territory but he’s not.

If only we had, say, $7 mil for 2010 freed up that wasn’t in a reliever…

Well, now the Yankees signed Winn,

so that leaves no one. If another team signs him at a bargain rate, I’ll be sorely disappointed.

by StringTheory on Jan 27, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. Probably worth writing something up about it. I’ll be out until like 10 tonight, but will look to penning something about it later.

Not Baseball Related...

But the Apple tablet was just introduced!! The iPad!!!
Pretty fired up about it!

it is cool

but if you have a laptop and and iphone/blackberry (I do), it seems kind of pointless to spend another $500+ on something like that. I liked the MLB at bat app demo. if only I had the money sitting around!

Basically, it does what a netbook can do for about double the price and doesn’t fit in a pocket (so it loses out to the iPhone or iPod touch in my opinion). I don’t see the point or why anyone who doesn’t just buy every apple product ever would purchase this. Just dumb. Would’ve been awesome 5 years ago, though.

That’s all I’ve gathered from it. an iPod touch that doesn’t fit in your pocket. I don’t know why they didn’t make this thing run multiple apps at the same time. Just seems like a giant waste of time. Especially at a price range of $499-629.

I can deal with Linux

What I can’t deal with are preppy Apple-sluts who do anything for a piece of white plastic with fruit on the outside.
