Tigers could be in play for (johnny) damon, who hits .363, slugs .550 and has a .961 OPS at pitcher-friendly comerica park.

Of the baseball reporters on twitter,

Heyman is probably he worst. He’s the polar opposite of someone like Morosi.

I support this if true.

I know people will say he’s old and not great defensively, but he takes care of things we lack:

1) Leadoff hitter
2) Speed/SB’s
3) Left handed bat
4) Restores some power to lineup
5) Knows how to work a count

I’m fine with a 5 man platoon between Damon, Ajax, Guillen, Ordonez, and Raburn. Especially if Ordonez can DH most of that.

by NickLAwyer on Jan 14, 2010 8:18 PM EST reply actions

Also,

His BABIP at Comerica is .385.

by StringTheory on Jan 14, 2010 8:23 PM EST reply actions

I would not be too disappointed if they did sign Damon

If he would be willing to platoon with Jackson so AJ isn’t bearing the brunt of playing CF alone and the ire of Granderson’s faithful.

I’d still rather have Russell Branyan. I wonder where the money would come from.

Where $ would come from

It’s not as if there is a salary cap, or a finite budget or limited bank account here. Illitch has shown time and time again with both the Wings and Tigers that he is willing to spend (and even lose money) in order to have a winning product on the field (hence why we’re in some contract messes now).

Damon strikes me as a player he’d be more than willing to spend for to help this club stay in contention for 2010-11.

by NickLAwyer on Jan 14, 2010 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

Some of those contract messes make sense at the time they were done.

The market for pitching was overpriced (and is still absurdly high) but none of them really worked out.

While there isn’t a salary cap there are limited roster spots. I guess what I’m saying is: yes but a cautious yes to the idea.

Well, there is a salary cap of sorts. Last year, Dombrowski said that they couldn’t really add any payroll. You don’t say that unless you’ve reached a ceiling. Given the down economy, I’d say that there isn’t a ton of payroll left after the Valverde signing.

Mike can find the money

I’m pretty sure I’ve paid for Valverde myself in Hot N Ready’s the past 5 years. Sure, there is an upper limit, and it’s not as high as NYY can go, but that Dombrowski bs about “not adding any payroll” is just that. Bs. Posturing, to negotiate with agents and keep current players happy so that when they hit their payoff years, they’re not trying to break the bank based on hometown bias.

Budgets are based purely on the owners. As I said above, Mr. I is more than willing to lose money. He’s proved it. We have to be judicious based on developing younger talent and not locking ourselves into more dead contracts, but bringing on Valverde is just about as low risk as it gets, and has been said a few times, actually provides a damn good trade chip if need be.

Even in a platoon situation, I would dispute Damon’s ability to play center field at this point in his career. He hasn’t played there regularly since 2006 (with a -11.6 UZR).

by StringTheory on Jan 14, 2010 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Damon definitely can’t play center anymore

by rif23 on Jan 14, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

I will pass on Johnny Damon. He’s not suited to be an outfielder at this point in his career and he’s likely not going to sign for “platooning outfielder money.”

Again, can he play the OF?

Branyan? I would suspect he wouldn’t be a ton worse than Damon but with Raburn, Thomas, Guillen, Jackson and Magglio, do we need another corner outfielder? Not really. We need some sort of thunder in the lineup.

But where does he play?

DH is supposed to be a spot for Guillen and Magglio to rest, Raburn spells them in the field on days when they rest.

We can throw Guillen to the birds for all I care. Counting on him being healthy enough to even need rest is fools gold in and of itself. Body has been breaking down and he’s not getting younger.

some day, we'll actually figure out what he meant by this
“The reality is, no matter what, we needed to make some adjustments,” Dombrowski said. “In almost any scenario, it’s a necessity. But it’s also one of those where we’re in a very good situation with a quality owner that projects to have a really solid payroll as we go forward. But at some point, adjustments needed to be made, and this was the time to do it for us.”

I read

For better or worse they gave up on Granderson and the deal with AZ really had nothing to do with salary.

by rif23 on Jan 14, 2010 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

If the price is right, I'm fine with this.

There’s no way it could be as bad as signing Jose Valverde.

by Dberg on Jan 14, 2010 8:52 PM EST reply actions

I liked him in Boston

maybe I could find a way to like him again, if he were to produce.

I don't have a signature.

by Kmann on Jan 14, 2010 8:54 PM EST reply actions

No, no, no, no.

Call it a hunch, but if Johnny Damon joins this team, he could be the second coming of Jacque Jones.

Plus, my grandmother has a better throwing arm than Damon does, and she died nineteen years ago.

This could make sense

If he fills the void at DH and leadoff, I think it works. I’m not a big fan of him playing the OF much and I wouldn’t want to give him a three year deal or anything.

For some reason . . .

. . . this would make the Valverde move make more sense to me. And I guess it would also confirm that they weren’t having a fire sale.

by rea on Jan 14, 2010 9:14 PM EST reply actions

I'd like this signing

I think most of this offseason’s frustration comes from the front office radiating one direction, everyone getting on board then DD pulls the chain on some move that suggests otherwise. I’m just going to be dizzy if they sign Damon and then do something weird like trade Miggy.

by Elfuego51 on Jan 14, 2010 9:24 PM EST reply actions

I like it

Sign him on. I want JD on this team – he would bring a type of leadoff hitter that we’ve never seen before – someone who can hit from both sides and works the count.

I woudln't mind it

So long

as it is just a one year deal you couldn’t really go wrong bringing Damon in…it isn’t my money

Jason Beck blog post on Damon

A little while ago Beck ended his blog entry with this:

Offensively, you can make a very good case that the Tigers can use Damon. But there would have to be a middle ground between them on a contract. The one bright side is that it wouldn’t take a long-term commitment, supposedly one or two years, and it’s tough to see a lot of competition right now, though reports suggest the Braves are interested.

I can’t say where Damon fits into the plan for payroll, because it’s hard to see where the plan is right now. But you can see where he could fit on the field and why this could be an opportunity for both sides.

That seems to be the major issue in this entire offseason, and Kurt nailed it with his reminder of DD’s quote (which I still don’t get). We really have no idea what DD or Mr. I are up to.

but he has noodles for arms

I would like to see them sign an outfielder who has a BETTER chance of throwing out a runner than I do.

I don’t care if he throws anyone out all season, so long as he hits

by rif23 on Jan 15, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Love it

Let’s do it. In it to win in 2010.
True, he adds no defense, but maybe he can spell Carlos in LF, who might actually be worse in the OF. They could take turns at LF and DH.

Just a thought

Damon will cost quite a bit to sign but signing him could also save us a lot of money. If i remember correctly Maggs has the same kind of AB trigger in his contract for next year. Might signing Damon give us a valid excuse to keep Maggs on the bench and avoid another 18 million dollar season.

Ordonez’s 2011 option will trigger with EITHER 147 starts OR 562 PA’s in 2010.
