Tigers outright Jeff Larish to Toledo
If you were still wondering who Tigers would lop off the 40 man roster in order or make room for new closer Jose Valverde, wonder no more.
Also worth noting; the Tigers now have more pitchers (21) than position players on their roster.

I still liked Jeff Larish…
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
Can I apply for VP of Membership for the CC Fan Club
I figure my job will be a breeze by 2011 or 2012… until then I will simply continue my unnatural amount of research and interest in regards to Casey. Thanks for consideration.

Was never a big fan....
…..Swing was way to big

I have always like Larish’s swing, it is very quiet and not really very long, especially for a power guy
Swing
The biggest problem for Larish is that he profiles for positions that are either entirely (first base) or basically (corner outfield) locked up
No opinion on him
He was never really given much of a chance in Detroit. He needed more at bats and opportunities that were no where to be found in Detroit.

This
I still think there are AB to be found (DH/Corner OF rotation could net him 400-500), but he isn’t getting them here, which is unfortunate.

Yeah. Agreed.
I really don’t know why he wasn’t given more opportunities in Detroit. Leyland to “blame” perhaps? He doesn’t seem to have consistent confidence in young players (like Larish not getting adequate playing time), yet is fine with other youngsters (Cletus, Donnie Kelly, et al). Head-scratcher in my opinion.

to me
it doesn’t matter so much when you have so many holes for (what is hopefully) a playoff contender.
we REALLY need a lefthanded bat, and every reliever we have takes away a roster spot for somebody to take that role. Especially when you consider that leyland doesn’t trust a lot of relievers (he TENDS to stick to the ones that throw strikes, that he can depend on), so I don’t think we’ll get the use out of that many pitchers as other teams might (and don’t get me started on relief pitching versus starting pitching discrepancies). still a facepalm for this team imho
Intersting...
I didn’t have much of an opinion on Larish either, but how is he (a left handed hitter with power, regardless of his defensive position) less valuable to this team than Brad Thomas?
If I keep this up, I am going to work myself into having an opinion on the matter.

Yes he is......
……less valuable then Brad Thomas.

LH hitter with power is more valuable
Than a lefty reliever that hasn’t pitched in the Bigs in how many years?
Not a hard case to make.

That would depend . . .
. . . on whether he was a good LH hitter with power, wouldn’t it?
He got 200 PA hurt.
Really going to judge him on that?

I'm with you on this
I disagree with the notion that Brad Thomas is more valuable than Larish. He never got a fair and extended chance.
I'm not sure
the decision was so much about value, as who they felt was a safe bet to make it through to Toledo. It is just a feeling, but i think more teams would have a use for a LOOGY reliever than a pretty low ceiling 1B/DH. It is a lot easier to find innings for a guy like Thomas than at-bats for Larish.

The real question is
when he peeks out from under his batting helmet will he see his shadow.

Sooo...
Do we expect him to be in Toledo, or picked up by someone else? Did he have options left?
A lifelong Tigers fan
Outrighted
When a roster move is announced as a player being outrighted, it means they have cleared waivers and are being assigned to a minor league team. Options only come into play when players are moving between the 40-man roster and the 25-man roster.
It’s difficult to argue this was a bad move when 29 other teams passed on adding him to their own 40-man rosters. If the Tigers find they need him, they can just add him back. This second part is just a general comment, not directed at you, ewild.

how many of those 21 are left handed relievers?
actually, I just checked, and it looks like 6, depending on how you classify Phil Coke and Nate Robertson.
I also see Jacob Turner on the 40 man roster, has there been any talk of him making it to Detroit this year?
Didn’t realize that he had the same birthday as me…just 16 years later…that’s just the tiniest bit depressing.
Official BYB Juju Consultant...now accepting rally creature applications!
Turner won’t be in detroit this year. He is on the 40-man roster because, like porcello, he signed a Major League deal after being drafted. If he’s in Detroit this year, he better be on a vacation with his family or the Tigers making a huge mistake that would make me stop rooting for them.

More depressing...
This is more annoying than depressing but
Turner’s around my age, and he’s making $5+ million dollars more than I will ever make. But I can’t throw 98 mph heat either.
And no, throwing a high school pitcher into a fast pased major league game would be a huge mistake. Look for him to emerge in 2011. He won’t be in the majors as soon as Porcello, I don’t think. He’s not as polished.
It’s too bad his contract was a major league one because his options will get burned each year he’s not on the major league team, and he takes up a roster spot.

I'd say 2012
Turner is good, but young arms take a while to develop. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he’s 18, right?

Oops!
Yeah! 2012 at the earliest!
I was still living in 2009!
Anyway, we have a sick rotation in the future:
Verlander, Porcello, Scherzer, Crosby, and Turner. Assuming they all stay in the organization, of course!

Sucks. There’s just no where for Larish to play. He’s not an OFer and 1st/3rd is locked up. If given the proper number of AB’s, he’d be a solid Three True Outcomes player — lots of K’s, BB’s and probably 25+ HR’s.

He's not great at 3B
I’d say either 1B or LF are his only options… though he’d make a good DH.

I don’t think he’s good anywhere than 1st — and he’s only average at 1st anyways. He was going to hurt us defensively anywhere he played. I was hoping he’d get a shot though.

With Inge coming off double knee surgery...
I thought Larish had a serious shot this Spring. His defense at first and third is far superior to Raburn or Kelly and we all know that we need a left handed bat. It just seemed like a good fit to me, I was pretty sure Jeff would get some ABs from the DH slot as well.
You gotta give the guy a chance before you give up on him. What’s next, outright Wells, Boesch, Strieby and Ramirez too?
Oh well…

Larish had a shot last year . . .
. . . and did not perform. Maybe he needs another shot?
It’s always hard to know how long to stick with a poorly performing young talent—see, for example, Carlos Pena.
I'd just like to point out...
As of right now, Larish is a non-roster invitee to spring training, and that the off season hasn’t started; someone might be traded to make room for him.
