Developing Young Potential Stars At No Cost Or We Don’t Want To Develop Anyone Unless He Can Contribute To A Championship
By Stephen Grosberg
Because the Tigers are GREAT at drafting, I feel they can develop players, who can win championships from within not through free agency. I’d ALWAYS consider a trade where another team wants a Tiger like Edwin Jackson and Granderson, where the Tigers obtained 2 players for minus. The key is aggressive promotion. The Tigers were forced to do it because of injuries. Now that they saw the results in Rhymes, Raburn, Weinhardt, Schlereth, and Wells, they should become believers. Now they should find 2 pitchers from Wilk/Weber/L. J. GAgnier/Furbush/Villarreal/Brown/Figaro/Oliver to start and long relief and give Zach Simons a shot in relief. I’d love to see the results of Vets vs. Kids in extra daily games in Spring Training. ANY games can give all a better slant. Scouting reports are fine, but they often impede players like Wilk/RhymesBishop. I’ll spend limited amounts of money on high A and lower players of other teams that look promising where the other teams don’t see the potential. Based on the talents of the Tiger Drafting Team, the list will be small. Any player who performs at a higher level should be promoted even if it’s limited innings like Cole Nelson should go to Erie rather than repeat Lakeland. College, and JC players like Chance Ruffin and Alex Burgos can move faster too. Ruffin needs the AFL. Burgos doesn’t need anything. The other keys are concentrating on control for pitchers and BB vs.K for hitters. That’s why I love Adam Wilk, Burgos, Rhymes, and Brandon Douglas. Potential game changers like 100% Ryan Strieby. Billy Nowlin, Rawley Bishop, and Wade Gaynor should be marked. Look for the Brett Gardner type of player. The AFL, Winter Leagues, and Spring Training will tell me more. Stay tuned as the stats pile up.

I don't know of any team that has ever won a championship relying 100% on home grown talent.
The baseball draft is very hit and miss. I like DD’s strategy in drafting for the most part. Build around a solid nucleus of top starting pitchers. Go over slot if you have to, and pay for premium talent especially in the first round. But DD has come up short in terms of drafting position players. When is the last time he drafted a blue chipper? Maybe Castellanos, maybe, but nobody is on the radar to contribute in a big way any time soon that’s not a pitcher.
Sure, there will be some good players coming out of the Tiger system. From the many will come a few good men. But no Cabrera, no Magglio, no Longoria, no Votto, no Mauer or Morneau, not even an AJax in the entire system. Perhaps a Brennan Boesch can correct his swing and do what he did for the first half of 2010 on a full time basis, then we’ve really got something. But with vacancies all over the field, at 2B, SS, 3B, Catcher, two corner OF’s, and a DH, there is not a single player that looks like he’d be above the average major leaguer at any of those positions. Not one. Rely on them to fill out your roster, and you finish in fourth place, at best, IMO.
One way that DD can improve what’s in the pipeline is don’t be so stupid about working the compensation game. The name Polanco just screams at you. Two first round picks. Another is what he did with the second comp pick in last summer’s draft. Okay maybe Ruffin is a decent reliever, but he passed up some great talent with that pick. How many comp picks will the Tigers get this summer? My bet is zero. Eight free agents leaving, and not one offer of arbitration that’s declined. That’s because any player remotely worth anything gets an extension from DD.
When you look at any draft, from any year, you see a very distinct pattern. Most first rounders make it. Most All Stars are high first round picks. As you go further down the draft list, there are fewer and fewer major leaguers on the list. That’s how it’s supposed to be. Theo Epstein in Boston annually winds up with a few first round comp picks. He trades for players at the deadline that will be free agents, knowing that they’ll decline arbitration. He just acquired a first round comp pick or two. Jarrod Washedburnt, Aubrey Huff, or Jhonny Peralta don’t get you those picks.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!

Something nice about DD
Paragraph 1, sentence 2.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
Appreciate Your Opinion As Usual Tigerdog1
Given enough playing time, the following will do it: Boesch(Swinginging at close pitches of the first 3—4 and not worrying about working the count), Rhymes(look at the #‘s and defense so far)2B, Worth/Santiago SS, + Peralta, Inge, Avila(He’s getting better with patience ), corner OF Dirks/Wells(Wait till you see both develop.) Guillen on the DL is a huge cance for development. By the way, DD got 2 extra draft picks last year. I’m using 2 extra IF and 1 extra OF—Dh. RHYMES IS MY TYPE OF PLAYER. Adam Wilk will develop that way. I can’t wait for Burgos/Cole Nelson. Chance Ruffin will tell me in AFL. Schlereth will be the MAN. Weinhardt could be. No improvement in the pipeline necessary. However, I offer my services in picking other team’s High A and lower players at very low prices.

Boesch wasn't working the count late in the year though
He was simply getting carved up by opposing pitchers. Even in 2-1 and 3-1 counts he couldn’t hit even BP fastballs. I don’t buy the “Just get back to swinging early in the count” nonsense. If he can destroy in ST and maybe AAA, then he’ll get his opportunity. He doesn’t deserve anything gifted to him.
Andy Dirks needs to hit for an OPS over .800 for more than 100 ABs before he should get an opportunity in the majors as well. There’s nothing wrong with these guys staying down and getting some seasoning. It’s what the minors are for, and I don’t see it as a slight to any of them.

I’d love to have a strategy for how much seasoning a player needs. In my humble opinion, Erie is the key. When the RBIs mount up at Erie, they move up in my book to Toledo or the Tigers without a full year. There’s always a key stat or change. With Rhymes, it’s BB vs. K. With Casper Wells and Cody Ross, it was stance change. With Avila, it’s patience and playing time. With Peralta, it’s RBI. With Raburn, it’s playing time. After talking to Andy Dirks in Norwalk in 2009, based on a remark he made, I think it’s learning what’s important. With Robbie Weinhardt, I think it’s being prepared for his luck when it comes. Work on that slider and don’t get discouraged. Brennan, the Tigers have given you every chance to Not get discouraged. Now you’re going to reward them your way. You’re going to make your Father proud. You KNOW how much he supports you.

Stephen...
I hope your repeated encouraging comments to your buddies Brennan and Ryan work. Next time you all hang, let them know I think their fathers are both proud of them already. Seriously, though, your enthusiasm for our minor league system is both unique and incredible!

I like the paragraphs....
and the points you make are right on. I would also like to make the point that if we do end up using our excess cash to sign a Type A free agent or two – there are good players available in the sandwhich rounds or later that other teams pass up for signability issues. We can then use our 1st round cash to sign a later guy that was passed over. Happened to us with Castellanos and these guys are always out there.

Lets put it this way
Guys may drop, but we’re not the only team that goes over-slot. See Boston for what I mean.
And if we lose first and second rounders, DD and company better be willing to throw a crapton of money at guys who fall.

as I recall David, watching your draft thread coverage
You really wanted some guys around round 4, 5 and even eleven that were above slot talents?

Yeah
And look what we got. Zilch.
The guys I was after were supplemental to second round talents that would have cost some serious bank. The problem is that a bunch didn’t sign at all, and the rest wanted too much money. Is it possible that we go the route of throwing cash at a bunch of draftees that drop? Yes. Is it probable given David Chadd’s draft strategy? Not really.

Was hopeful DD would get more compensation than he did last year
He said they knew Polonco would have signed if they had offered. Holding out hope (however slim) for compensation on Inge and Peralta this year. I don’t think either are difference makers although a carreer year 26 homers at ss would be something. Hoping Bonderman is resigned to be in position for a B pick next year when turner is ready, provided he hasn’t been traded. Would hope that Bonderman would get beat out and end up in pen, although his injury still may project a return of velocity.
Separate issue, anyone know why draft picks are hardly ever traded in MLB?
MLB Trade rumors says Greinke has a no trade clause that includes the Yankees and Red Sox but is open to TB. Coming off that anxiety disorder, I bet all the high pressure cities are all on the no go list. What do you all think, is Detroit a pressure place to play?

I just don't understand the tigers development strategy
I’m mighty confused with how they doled out playing time at the ML level this year. Once it was clear that the playoffs weren’t happening, they should have transitioned to a more strategic approach to assessing minor league talent at the major league level (not all at once, but in specific competitions).
Ajax and Avila got a lot of playing time and I think were treated in ways that will benefit their development. I have no complaints there.
Boesch should have had fewer AB’s in the last two months both to reduce his free-fall and to allow Wells to get more AB’s. We could have learned more about them both if they had been handled differently. After weeks of futility at the plate, I have to think that Boesch’s confidence has been shattered. Wells showed a lot at the plate and in the field and I think earned more AB’s, at least to be used as a better test of his ability to handle a full time job.
At 2B, there didn’t seem to be much of a plan. When Sizemore came back, he got only sporadic playing time while Rhymes got most of the AB’s. Rhymes’ ceiling is lower than Sizemore’s, but he was treated as the blue chip prospect. I don’t feel that we really know much about Sizemore since his start to the year was hampered by the recovery from his injury. Rhymes played like a major league 2B but the small sample size and his small stature and small minor league productivity do not lead me to believe that we have a plus 2B in our midst.
Next year, they may add a few rookies, but if they rely on more than 2 to be major contributors (ie starters in the field or > 50 innings pitched), then they are not likely to be able to keep up with Minnie or the CWS (College World Series always comes to mind).

A small bet on Rhymes. Look at what he does plus BB vs. K. I want him there with Danny Worth. In my book, however, Sizemore is first up followed by Brandon Douglas(look at his #’s) if a DL develops.

Nice To Have You Back JAYRC!!!!
Appreciate. Interested in hearing your comments on Cole Nelson and the Lakeland Kids if you saw them. Also, are you as excited about Adam Wilk as I am? Aklso, would you send Wade Gaynor directly to Erie? Did Bryan Holaday just get tired?
by StephenGrosberg on Oct 21, 2010 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I honestly just think Holaday got tired! I wouldnt write him off just yet.
I’m NOT all about agressive promoting, so naturally I think Gaynor must start in Lakeland. A half a season will not kill him.
I don’t really have an opinion on Wilk…sorry.
Cole Nelson pitched one hell of a game the only time i saw him in action. He is definately on my radar.
Just being my usual sarcastic self. Good work SG
I Greatly Appreciate Having You At Lakeland
Other names on my radar are the following at Lakeland:Dan Gentzler, Shawn Teufel, Matt Little, Bruce Rondon. Agree a half a season for Wade Gaynor is fine. I just want to get him to Erie if he performs. John Murrian is another name.
