The All Former Tigers Playoff Team
Just for kicks, I started to put together a lineup of former Tigers that have found their way onto teams that participated in the 2010 post season. This doesn't necessarily mean anything beyond the enjoyment of the exercise.
1B- Carlos Pena, Rays
2B- Placido Polanco, Phillies
SS- Edgar Renteria, Giants
3B- Omar Infante, Braves
OF-Andres Torres, Giants
OF- Curtis Granderson, Yankees
OF- Cody Ross, Giants
C- Matt Treanor, Rangers
DH- Marcus Thames, Yankees
PH- Matt Joyce, Rays
PH- Aubrey Huff, Giants
SP- Colby Lewis, Rangers
SP- Jair Jurrjens, Braves
RP- Francisco Cordero, Reds
RP- Clay Rapada, Rangers
RP- Chad Durbin, Phillies
Honorable Mention
Players that made a contribution to a playoff team during the 2010 season, but were not on the playoff roster
SP- Nate Robertson, Phillies
RP- Denny Bautista, Giants
RP- Guillermo Moscoso, Rangers
C- Dane Sardinha, Phillies
OF- Gabe Kapler, Rays

I must admit
I can’t keep up with where everyone ends up (Sardinha with the Phillies escaped me) so I appreciate this.
Of all of them, I’m happiest for Treanor. His back trouble really didn’t give him a chance to develop with the Tigers, though Lord knows we’ve hung on to worse injured players for longer. Free agency served him well.

happened to Dane

pretty cool
I didnt know about Torres, Ross, Lewis and Cordero. Our scouts got a good eye for talent, too bad we cant always coach them up to be where they are today…
Torres bounced around for a long time after he left Detroit.
Apparently the turning point in his career was him accepting an ADHD diagnosis and taking medication. Count me in the camp that thinks that is over-diagnosed in children, but I’m glad he got his career going with help.
Agree. I mos def had ADD when I was in school, except the shrinks and big pharma hadn't invented it yet
My mind was every where but on the teachers. I sure as hell wasn’t staring at the nuns during math class!
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
And Carlos Pena bounced around quite a bit after he left Detroit as well

solution:
throw prospects into giant dryer, rotate until they are bounced around, insert in lineup

How is that different from the 2010 Tigers? :)
Maybe the most surprising season to me is Omar. Well, I’d have to say Colby Lewis, but Omar is a big surprise.

every time i see andres torres i chuckle to myself
oh those were the years…
predominately lefty lineup, full of speed, and no power.
a few years later…
predominately righty lineup, little speed, and bunches of power.

Now that you've ID'ed them
An interesting list…how many of them would you take over what we have now? Maybe the PlaciDome (okay, for sure The PlaciDome), Jurrjens, Granderson as the left fielder over Ryan Raburn, who else on the the list? Farnsworth the Firestarter? Aubrey “EpicFail” Huff? Edgar F. Renteria? I think I’d rather play the cards we have now and not weep over departed never-weres and never-will-bes.
Obviously, any team would take Huff and his .891 OPS, but who saw that coming after last year?
Polanco for one year, yes, but the three year deal that he got? Maybe not.
Renteria’s numbers compare with Peralta’s closer than one might think. But $ 9 mil per for Edgar? NOT!
2010 Offense
Renteria: 243 AB, .276 Avg, .332 OBP, .374 SLG, .707 OPS
Peralta: 551 AB, .249 Avg, .311 OBP, .392 SLG, .703 OPS
2009 Offense
Renteria: 460 AB, .250 Avg, .307 OBP, .328 SLG, .635 OPS
Peralta: 582 AB, .254 Avg, .316 OBP, .375 SLG, .690 OPS
2010 Defense: Renteria: .856 RZR Peralta: .791 RZR
We’d take Colby Lewis and Jurrjens.
Omar had a breakout season, but will they sign him? Nope.
Cody was not spectacular until the playoffs.
Rapada probably wouldn’t make the team at this stage, either.
Durbin is a nice pitcher, and is a free agent. I thought it was a mistake to non tender him.
Pena struggled below the Mendoza this season and is a free agent, but no thanks.
Nothing where DD is really kicking himself over a “bad” move.

I've been thinking this same thing all post season long
But I’ll admit I overlooked Torres. He’s a nice table setter with speed that we could use at the top of our line-up right now.
Out of everyone listed the 2 I really want back are Polanco and Jurrjens. The Jurrjens deal should have never happened. Just think of a top 3 of JV-Max-Jurrjens…sigh…
Chances are that if JJ remained in the rotation, we would not have had the promotion of Armando Galarraga
and a certain umpire could’ve been off the hook two years later!
funny how things work out!

And JJ would be pitching for FLA right now

They say you build through the draft
I count eight who came through the tigers minor league system (Cordero, Granderson, Infante, Jurrjens, Joyce, Kapler, Ross, and Torres) – not certain if they all were drafted or were acquired as minor league FA’s or trades. There who have evolved into decent players, but none that you’d call THE franchise.
Jurrjens was a risky trade as was Cordero, Granderson, and Joyce. One of those 4 trades was a losing proposition, but none were make or break for the franchise. For the most part DD has gotten more value back than he has given up.
Omar
Infante is a potential free agent after the WS. If he is available, would it be better to go after him or to resign Peralta?
Infante at SS?
Maybe at 3B, but 2B is his natural home, isn’t it?

I'd take Omar over Peralta ten days a week
but he got himself into Leyland’s dog house for being absent minded or lackadaisical in the field, and spent time back in the minors before being traded (stupidly) for Jacques Jones. If JL thinks Omar was lazy, wait til he gets a load of Jhonny!
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
BTW- Omar has an option for only $ 2.5 mil that is certain to be exercised
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
I wish we could get Infante back
I hated that they traded him to the Cubbies, especially for Jones. That proved to be a giant fail on the part of the organization.
