Tigers begin the roster shuffle; Bonine elects free agency
The Tigers were busy this afternoon. The 40-man roster is now a bit thinner. Here's a quick rundown:
- Shortstop Brent Dlugach was traded to the Red Sox for a player to be named later. Pronounciation of his name will now be butchered entertainingly with a Boston accent.
- Jeff Frazier, Max St-Pierre, Jay Sborz and Eddie Bonine were all outrighted to Toledo.
- Bonine elected to take free agency immediately. The other three will join him Saturday.
- By my count, the 40-man roster is down to 34 names. Check the organizational tree to see who is left.

darn, i can't complain that we should bring up dlugie anymore
and as much as he irked fans sometimes, i’m going to miss old boniner. the others i really don’t care much for anyways (especially sborz)

I'm surprised at Bonine
not a big shock, but at the major league minimum, he’s a useful pitcher in the bullpen.
No doubt, they’re making room for a couple guys to come off the DL and protect some from the Rule 5 draft.
Zach Miner is on the bubble as well, and you have to wonder about Brad Thomas. Those guys are in the $ 1 million range, while Bonine only made $ 400 K. More holes in the pen after this move, IMO.

ya surprised at Bonine
He is a decent pitcher when he uses the knuckball, some organization will get a steal, good luck Eddie.

Bonine logic
The guy isn’t getting any younger and he’s probably already near his ceiling. It’s not absurd to think he could be a #5 somewhere or at least long relief, but I really don’t view this as a loss. Our organization probably could use his spot to at least try some of the other talent and see if they have a higher potential to contribute. Someone like Grangier (not hung up on the name here…insert any AA or AAA starter) might do as well as Bonine and may even be better. It either allows us to sign / trade for a better player or promote from within to see what we’ve got.
Good luck Eddie.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

hey I resemble that remark….excuse me while I go pahk ma cah.
Freeing up some roster space for Crawford, should be a Tiger by Sunday.

What a silly post
Nobody deals on the weekend. It will have to be Friday afternoon….and early.

Bonine will do well
wherever he goes, in my opinion.

Best of luck to Eddie. He was my favorite mediocre tiger on the current roster
thanks for the updates kurt
The depth chart for starting pitching is getting verrrrrry thin!
Verlander
Scherzer
Porcello
Coke (ug totally unproven)
Galarraga
Figaro
Oliver (not ready)
Furbush? (not ready, didn’t handle AAA well)
What next? Drucker? Duane Below? Just very thin. All the more reason to add another starter.
Jake Westbrook is starting to make some sense. The ultimate ho hum.

40 man
Ordonez is also a free agent and is not currently on the 40 man roster. Also, I believe Seay is a free agent, but if not, both he and Miner are eligible to be non-tendered this fall. This would free up space for a couple bullpen arms plus at least three offensive players and allow them to protect some prospects in the Rule 5.
Ordonez is not a free agent until he files, which he can not do just yet, but it's imminent.
He’s still on the 40 man roster. His agent has to file with the league office. Technicality.
Bobby Seay is on the 60 day DL, but he won’t be activated to the roster since he will be a free agent.
Miner was activated and put back on the roster on Nov 2nd. I’m not sure why he, and not Zumaya were activated, but there is now room to activate Zumaya, which I believe they must do in the next couple of days. I would think that Zach is a non tender candidate. He made $ 950 K, is eligible for arbitration and should not get much of a raise, if any. He and Brad Thomas would be non tender candidates.
The Tigers will not be putting players on the roster to protect them in the Rule 5 draft if there’s a good chance that they’ll just have to take them off later when they sign a free agent or make a trade. If they’re planning on replacing a departing free agent on the roster with another free agent, they’ll just hold the spot open. In the Rule 5 draft, if a player is taken, the club that chooses them has to keep them on the 25 man roster all season long. If a player has to be taken off the 40 man roster, they just have to clear waivers, and another club can pick them up, put them on their 40 man roster, and stash them in the minors until they’re ready for showtime.
I don’t think the Tigers will add more players to the roster from outside the organization than the number that they’ll lose to free agency. But they’ll take one player off the roster for each young guy that they want to protect. The list of possible additions includes Iorg, Gustavo Nunez, Brayan Villareal, Duane Below, and I would add Zach Simons and Charlie Furbush. Simons is the only reliever in the bunch and should be protected, but apparently someone in the organization doesn’t like him.

Bonine
I am afraid that this fellow will perfect that knuckler and burn the Tigers as a member of the Minnesota Twins!
