Royals sign Zach Miner
I thought we were done with our baseball-related posts for 2010, but I guess there's one short one to do.
Earlier today, former Tigers swingman Zach Miner signed with the Kansas City Royals.
Miner told MLB.com he had hoped to stay on with the Tigers, but the offer the Royals made was better for him.
There were a few teams that checked in, and the Tigers and the Royals were the most aggressive. But in the end, we just felt like KC was going to be a very good opportunity going forward, not only for this year, but for a few years down the road."
Miner lost his entire 2010 season after having Tommy John Surgery. He was designated for assignment in November to make room for Victor Martinez.
Terms of the deal have not been stated.
But hey, if Detroit still needs a swing man, I hear Chad Durbin is still available ...

I have always liked Zach Miner.
He was probably the guy I was biased towards the most.

I wouldn't have minded seeing him in the rotation this season...
but what can ya do. Somebody had to go.
I preferred him to Willis in 09
and argued for him to be a starter too. But large wasted investment gets a longer shot to prove itself.

He was okay for us a couple of yeaars ago, but . . .
. . . how effective he’ll be now is an open question. And it’s not as if he’d ever done better for us than, “okay.”
A very replaceable player . . .
Good for him.
I think he’ll end up starting in KC, since that whole pitching staff is horrific.
Um, guy, there were more folks at fault than just Zach
Granted, we all knew what was coming but Zach wasn’t the losing pitcher nor did he have a lapse in defensive judgment late in the game that put the tying runner on third rather than first.
Alex English was pretty coo'.
And I'll never forgive Miggy for the drinking binge (sarcasm key).
If you won’t forgive just Zach for 163, then who is unforgiven for the rest of the meltdown? The whole team lost game 163, not just Miner. To think any one player cost us the post-season in 2009 makes it way too easy to scapegoat just anybody. You could blame anyone from JV not having one more incredible start to Maggs wife for getting cancer (which is just sick to do, just making a point). Besides, the Twins were white hot, too.
I was for the Alexander trade when it happened, and I'd do 'er again!

Miner
another corner nibblin, got no guts to challenge a hitter, Galarraga type pitccher.
corner nibbling is the foundation of being a big league pitcher
anything thrown in the middle of the plate is a big mistake
good afternoon
Greg Maddux proved that point pretty nicely
Goddamn, I miss him.
(There was a story I read about him a few years ago… a sportswriter was watching a game with Maddux, who was dissecting the pitcher’s performance. “Two pitches from now the batter will foul out to the third baseman,” he correctly predicted.)
You have no clue about pitching do you?

Don't work the corners, throw it down the pipe like a champion!
(And watch things fly out of the park).
Alex English was pretty coo'.
Good riddance
I won’t forgive him for September 30, 2006. All he had to do was come in and beat (his now new team) the Royals and clinch the Central division. Instead, he gave up a ton of runs and we never had a chance.
Actually….why the hell did Leyland start him for that game to begin with?
Oops…sorry Zach
The only thing more pathetic....
than a Tigers fan still fuming over game 163 two years ago is a Twins fan throwing it in our faces like it still matters.
Not saying any of you on here are still mad about that....
Its just that I come across Twins fans that think that is the pinnacle of their life.
when their team has the postseason track record that they do
you really don’t have anything better to be happy about
Miner knew he didn't fit with Tigers
I sure the reason he went to KC is he knew he would have a hard time making the Tigers out of spring training. At least that shows that our pitching has been improving from a couple years ago.Wish Miner the best ,just not when the Tigers play him.
the biggest knock for Miner on this team...
was that Leyland liked him in the bullpen way too much. Not necessarily his fault but it’s a knock against him non the less. If it wasn’t for that I would say that Miner had a pretty good chance to make the rotation especially with the 4 and 5 slots undecided.
I always thought he would have been
a decent guy to have on the rotation full time. Just a decent guy who could give you 180 innings and a quality start more often than not, but still more valuable than in the pen. I don’t really care about his random shortcomings in big game situations. Until somebody brought it up, I had forgotten about his role in losing the division title 2006 anyway, I remember 2009 too well almost entirely.
you must have tried to dash them
that causes strikethrough

Just to kind of keep of the discussion...
I wouldn’t mind seeing Chad Durbin brought in to compete. I remember him filling in the “swing-man” role quite adequately. I think I’d rather have a lefty win the role but overall you can’t have enough competition and overall I’d rather have the best man win.
Durbin did ok with Philly, made type B
I always liked Miner, don’t know why he never seemed to get a shot at the 5th starter spot. Maybe it was the contracts in front of him, JL wanting a ground ball out of the pen, or Boris as agent making a year of relative success an overpriced contract? Guess with just a minor league contract his arm must still be a question mark.

Good Luck
to Zack in KC. But coming off of TJ surgery I’m not even sure he makes that staff out of spring training. Maybe by the middle of the year he gets called up if he’s healthy. As far as his performance goes, he filled a role. Sometimes good, once in a while not so good. But that’s waht you get with marginal MLB players. As far as blaming him fo any of the past failures, no way. You win as a team, you lose as a team.
Good pick up
maybe the casual KC fan will confuse him for Zach Grienke. LOL.
good afternoon
