MLB Winter Meetings Open Thread: Day 4
Last night, the Red Sox backed up the armored truck to Carl Crawford for seven years and more than $20 million a year. Today, teams will hold the Rule 5 draft. Talk about everything at today's open thread!

well...
That’s one more player we can get out of our system. Move on, nothing to see here!
How much are the Red Sox going to spend? They had a 7 year deal on the table for CL as well. wow. They still have to pay Adrian Gonzalez too.
Warning, content may include sarcasm.
Who cares, honestly
as long as we’re not the ones paying for those ridiculous contracts.

That lineup is scary good
Better than Yankees, I think. Gonzalez, Youkalis, Pedroia, Crawford, Papi…5 superstars (although Papi’s star is falling). Nice complementary pieces in Scutaro, Ellsbury, and Drew. Their rotation isn’t too shabby either with Lester, Bucholz, Beckett, and Lackey.
That’s my new favorite to with the AL.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
i was thinking that too
as much as i loathe the red sox, at the same time i am delighted because i know the yankees are going to have a hard time beating them. Its a good thing

hands down favorites
But now I guess it’s a sure thing the Yankees will get Lee.
You said you don’t care since we aren’t paying for those contracts, but look at that lineup. If we put together a team like that I don’t really think you’d mind what we were paying them.
All I know is, it sure must be a good week to be a Red Sox fan. I’d still be pumped by the addition of Gonzalez and now Crawford on top of that… geez.
Didn’t think it was possible but now I hate the Sox even more. Which sucks because I really like Gonzalez and Crawford as players, just hate the team.
I still like Gonzo
I hope he plays well, he’s never gotten the attention he deserved playing in San Diego.
Not to mention that Pedroia and Ellsbury missed most of the season last year
and their pitching staff had an awful season, and is almost certainly due for a bounce back.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
RedSox look worse to me
I’d rather have VMart and Beltre.
good afternoon
Only if Beltre is on a year by year contract.

That Peña deal
is even worse than the Werth deal. It sure won’t help Detroit in bargaining for Maggs. I’m willing to bet he gets 2/23.
President & Founder of the "Bring back the Big Tilde in 2k11" Campaign
definitely not worse
10 mil is a lot but at just 1 year it’s not too much invested. they lost out on Dunn so they wanted to bring in a power hitting 1B. 10 mil for 3 or 4 years would have been worse that Werth’s
Yep
One year is no big deal. Lots of upside to Pena…last year was probably as bad as it will get and he still hit 28 HR and got on base about 33%.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
there is no way on the face of this earth thta Carlos Peña is worth 10 million dollars for 1 season

40 homers mean nothing
if he only drives in 60-70 runs and hits .230 (which is very possible with that lineup).
.230 would be a good season for Peña
not the kind of bat I want in Detroit. We’ve already got enough of those.

2005- 06 was as bad as it will get for Pena.
At least he has a major league job right now.

high spending teams
I only care in the sense that another AL team is stronger than ever. We are fighting for a wild card and it usually lives out east.
I think it’s fair to be upset with the system, to be chapped that they are heavy hitters and we are not, and even call them evil. But when they sign very good players for a lot of money I don’t think it’s fair to call the contracts bad or even ridiculous. They paid market price. These are the teams that win championships more regularly than the “have nots”. Having more good players, regardless of the contract makes you better, not worse. In their situation. the opportunity cost is just not as great. Find another reliever for a million bucks a year? Great! Tack him on too.
Warning, content may include sarcasm.
ask the Yankees
About the market for Cliff Lee. He’ll get a “ridiculous” contract. But only because they would be able to get him for any less.
It’s a market – Players want more, teams want to pay less. Competition, economics and stuff. Limited resources, price elasticity of demand, and other fancy terms I can’t explain.
Warning, content may include sarcasm.
Just because you couldn’t get a player for less doesn’t mean that it is a good contract, or even that you are getting a player at “Market Value”. The way bidding on individual players in baseball occurs actually basically guarantees that the winning team is paying above, often significantly what the players market value should be.
This is almost assuredly going to be a very bad contract. Being a “have” and signing big contracts doesn’t guarantee success (see: Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, oh ya and Tigers).
True
But people buying a new Lexus have a better chance of getting to their destination than those buying a used Kia.
Lexus sell a an exorbitant price. There is a definite premium for the car, but one that Lexus can demand on the market. A premium that I can’t afford and I believe is a waste of money compared to the Kia. But, if I HAD to make it across the country…I’ll still take the new Lexus.
Wait…what were we talking about?

Remember The 2008 Tigers
Our lineup was supposed to score 20 runs a game over & over again & run away with everything even the World Series, We bought a World Series Championship with this team.
1-Granderson
2-Polanco
3-Magleo
4-Cabrera
5-Guillen
6-Sheffield
7-Thames
8-Rodriguez
9-Renteria
That lineup was more fearsome than the Red Sox lineup right now & we finnished Dead Last 14 Games out of first. Their lineup does not Guarantee them the World Series Pennant.
But it is looking really fearsome though right now.

Tigers have no chance
The one year the Tiger have the money to add a big time talent and they are still sitting on the sidelines. The Tigers have never won the division and will be hard pressed to beat the White Sox or Twins this year. And with what the Red Sox have just added and what the Yankee’s already have they don’t have much chance at the wild card either. The only chance now would be if they sign Lee which they don’t have the guts to do.They should just trade for Gonselanny and tell us all that he is going to help us win.The Tiger’s won 81 games last year and this team is no better then that team.Just the facts.
Totally disagree
This is easily an 83 win team :)
Seriously, they are 2 pieces away from seriously contending with Twins and ChiSox. Those two pieces are a legit #3 or 5 hitter and a legit #3 starter. Both are still very attainable between now and spring training. Of course, I’d like to see something develop soon…
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
I'd argue that we're really only one of those pieces away from contending
but I won’t complain for a second if we get both. We’re not far off. If some of our role players perform up to their potential this year and/or we get one or two of the young guys to step up, this team will be right in the thick of things by the end of the season.
If that one piece is Lee
I think we are two peices away unless the one piece is Lee.The first is we need a quality starter in the rotation. The second is we need a proven MLB corner outfielder who can bat #3 or #5.Any team that has Verlander and Cabrera has a chance.
I disagree
Unless we get Lee or maybe Grenkie & Magglio back we might have a chance, but as of right now, our Starting Pitching Rotation, we have two pitchers that will give us 6 or 7 innings per game on a regular basis. The other 3 will not get far into the 6th inning on most starts, at that rate the Pen will be tired & in shambles by mid June again. Carlos Guillen & Zumia will probibally be on the disabled list by June also.
As of right now Minus any Lee or Grenkie & Magglio I see us fighting for fourth place & well under .500, closer to a .425 team.
I can only hope I am wrong. Everyone stays healthy & the young guys catch fire.
I am a dreamer.

The Tigers are right where they were at the end of the season
Short a No. 3 or 5 hitter,
short one good 2- 3 starting pitcher
short one late inning reliever.
Add V Mart, lose our 2 and 3 hitters
Add Benoit, lose Coke from the pen
Add Coke to the rotation, and that means nothing until he proves something
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
I've been thinking of doing a fanpost on this
I’ve been comparing to Spring Training 2010, not the end of 2010. If we’re going to compare to the end of the season, we are most certainly better than October 1, 2010 because we didn’t have Maggs or Vmart or Benoit.
If we compare to the start of 2010, I think we’re slightly better because:
1.) We didn’t have a proven 3 and 5 hitter then either. We had Maggs and Guillen? I can say that we probably felt more confident with Guillen than our current options for #3 or 5, but I can’t figure of for the life of me why.
2.) Our starting rotation was as bad last year to start the season as it is right now. Bonderman deserved no more confidence than Galaragga currently deserves and Willis certainly didn’t make any of us confident.
3.) We have the exact same disposal of late inning options as we did last year. I might even argue that Benoit is more of a late inning option this year than Coke was considered last year.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
You're nuts
If you think this team is no better than last year. We’ve got upgrades in a few positions going in. Last year our starting shortstop was Adam Everett. Peralta may not be a superstar but he’s definitely an upgrade. We’ve got V-Mart splitting catching duties with Avila instead of Laird. That’s a huge upgrade. V-Mart easily drives in 50 more runs than Laird. Our rotation is about as good as last year and Porcello should rebound a bit. If we do get Ordonez back and maybe find a better #5 starter this team will easily be on track to win 88+ games.
Not nuts
We play the Yankee’s,the Red Sox’s and the White Sox’s they have or are going to improve there team. Will this team win more or less games against them than last year. The way it stands now the anwser is less.If we stay the same and everybody we play is better we will win less games.
Everyone plays the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox
The Yankees and Red Sox, last time I checked, aren’t even in our division. If we go .500 against the White Sox (a tough task any season, apparently) I think we’re in good shape.
Signing VMart is a start towards not staying the same.
There’s still 2.5 months before pitchers and catcher report, plenty of time to make changes yet. Besides, the process has already begun, with the Martinez signing.
I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.
Um
We’ll probably upgrade at catcher and second base due to Avila and one of Sizemore and Rhymes maturing. We’ve upgraded at shortstop with Jhonny Peralta (no, really) and in left field by handing the job off to Raburn. And DH got a major bump with V-Mart.
Plus DD isn’t done. Calm down already: it’s been like 2 months.

I just have to wonder if that plan already got destroyed. If they don’t do much else than i think signing V mart was a bad idea. Now if they pull off a big trade or sign Lee thats different.
True
But as it stands, we downgrade in RF losing Maggs with no clear replacement. I’m sure that situation will resolve itself somehow, but for now, I would say we are a slightly better team.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
I know, right
As basic as we looked last season coming into spring training they put up one hell of an effort and were in it for a long time.
I still think adding Maggs and a pitcher is necessary. BUT who knows everyone is in it no need to give up already!

Yankees
got pushed into offering that 7th year to Lee. Gee, you think the Sox getting CC had anything to do with that? A tip of the hat to Theo on this one, getting a great player and forcing your #1 competition into a panic move at the same time.
Ordonez
I think the Crawford signing actually helps us with Ordonez. The Red Sox were sounding like our most serious competition for Magglio so with them out of the way his price could actually go down. Anyone else who’s interested won’t have as much money to throw at him for us to have to outbid.
I’m a little bummed to see both the Red Sox and Yanks (assuming they get Lee) improve so much at the same time though. Tampa is completely screwed now that all the young talent that made up their core for the past couple of years is outgrowing their budget.
Really wish more National League teams had swooped in and taken Crawford and Lee out of the AL so our direct competition would be weaker. But hey, at least the White Sox and Twins haven’t done anything to drastically improve yet. Dunn was a nice move for Chicago but I think by March we’ll be the clear winners in offseason moves for the Central. Especially of Minny loses Pavano. Sounds like the Brewers are pretty hot for him right now.
sorry...
Minnesota is losing a lot of their bullpen pieces and their rotation aside from Liriano is pretty bad. I’m not trying to trash Minnesota but I think we have a solid shot. Chicago is who I’m really worried about.
by JAYRC on Dec 9, 2010 8:59 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah
Especially if Carlos Quentin or any of last year’s other underperformers rebound. Chicago could be pretty nasty this year since they already have a solid rotation. But still, those damn Twins somehow stay in it every year no matter how many weaknesses they have on paper. I would like nothing more than to see them finish in last place for a decade but I swear you could slap Twins uniforms on the fracking Pirates and they’d win 90 games.
Yeppers, they do indeed always find a way
I’m also curious to see what Joe Nathan can do this season. They will more than likely be losing 2-3 key pieces of that pen though. IMO the pen is what won a lot of their games the last few years.

Angels
May still be in the market for an outfielder as well as courting Beltre. I don’t think DD should wait too long if he is really serious about Maggs. He may be gone sooner rather than later.

I really think the Angels will stay pat in the OF though. I anticipate them signing both Beltre & Soriano instead.
by JAYRC on Dec 9, 2010 9:01 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Not mention Minnesota also just traded JJ Hardy for scraps
They might start Tsuyoshi Nishioka at SS (I’ve heard he’d probably be better suited to 2B in MLB), Alexi Casilla is probably going to start at 2B instead of Orlando Hudson (lol), no one knows how Justin Morneau is going to come back, and they probably won’t get another 1.0 OPS season out of Jim Thome (that’s if he even goes back to them).
Add the potential loss of Carl Pavano with the bullpen losses, and they’re one Francisco Liriano injury away from being a pretty mediocre team.
This is all going to make it that much more painful when they inevitably win the division next year anyway.
by ozymandius1024 on Dec 9, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions
They seem to play better without Morneau, anyway
Last couple of season, they were just putzing along, Morneau gets hurt, and they put on the afterburners. And then get swept by the yankees in the postseason.
I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.
Sign Mags Now.
Just do it. With Werth and Crawford gone, it only makes sense. Ask what he wants, and give it to him. He’s too good, and we’re running out of options. Sign him now.

Yesterdays Transactions
First thing this morning I go to MLB Rumors and look at all the transactions for yesterday and see nothing done by the Tigers. I guess I shouldn’t say I was surprised, but was definitely disappointed. Seeing guys like Bartlett and Hardy moving makes me think that signing Peralta so fast might have been a mistake. Bartlett would have been a great fit for us. But it is what it is. We still need that other hitter for the 3 or 5 hole and still need the SP. But our options are becoming more limited as each day passes.

Still strange
I read some comments over at Twinkie Town and on MLBTR and its close to unanimous that this was a bad deal for the Twins from the fans perspective. I don’t get the move either. Maybe they just dont think he can stay healthy and supposedly the pitchers they got have some upside as bullpen arms. Anyways I like what the O’s have done so far.
All I have to say is that in December 2007...
The Tigers were crowned WS champs at the Winter Meetings, too. How’d that work out?
Good point
But the more talent that you obtain the better your chances of winning. In 2007 the Tiger did actully win they obtained Cabrera.Without him how good would we be.
Lee to the Yanks is a sure thing
With Crawford a Red Sock (is that gramatically correct?) they are loaded with left-handed bats. Since the Yanks play them so much, it only makes sense they have a southpaw loaded rotation. Plus, they are the Yankees so they’ll spend whateverit takes. I expect the word to coem down today.
I agree with Sutelc that CC signing with the Sox means Maggs is more likely to be a Tiger next year. Let’s do this!!!!
The Yankee's offered Lee 7yrs now
With Boras as Maggs agent he will sign with whoever pays him the most. Its time to move on and try to get a quality arm in the rotation. If Maggs really wanted to be a Tiger he would of already signed,Im sure the Tiger would of made him a good offer.
he just worked out for them yesterday
I doubt they were gonna make an offer before confirming his ankle has not fallen off and is operational.

Is all but off of our list now too. I heard the Pirates are shopping Maholm if their deal with Atlanta finally works out. He’d be a decent grab for a competition spot for our #5 I think.
These Winter Meetings have been terribly boring. If we didn’t have all of that money come off the books I’d understand.. I guess the Martinez signing just isn’t what I had in mind for us this offseason..
If only V Mart, should of kept our Draft Pick
If the only thing we were going to do this offseason is sign V Mart,we should of passed and kept our draft pick.I don’t get it are we trying to win now or are we trying to win in 2012 or 2013 or when.26 yrs since our last World Championship and still counting.I have faith in DD but this years plan dosen’t look very good right now.
the tigers might be worcking on deal with mets for bay he is not a good fit for met s who have bad team payroll proleames and need young pitching in the bullpen and start s also the rays need a 1st basemen and we have on who is ready in the minnors that get them that starting pitcher they need maybeeshields for say strieby and ayoung bullpen arnm in the minnioers just a coulpe of deals the tiers could mack aftear the winnter meatings
No thanks..
I’ve been banging the Beltran drum on previous posts tho. Switch-hitter, some pop and speed.. covers ground in OF. If the Mets eat all but even 7-8 million owed to him (per year), I’d get excited again..
We need a starter first
I don’t think we have much of a chance unless we find a quality starter first.I think we should look for that first. If we don’t find that then we should just play the guy’s we have.By playing Boesch and Wells we will see if one of them can step up and deliver before we trade them only to be sorry later.
I only meant..
I’d rather take a chance on Beltran, as opposed to Bay. Everyone and their mother knows Bay’s knees aren’t gonna hold out much longer..
Thats not bad
I just think we need to wait to see if he would be the piece we need and what it would cost.Beltran could be an excellant addittion if we have the other pieces in place he has the talent.
Agree completely
Plus, I don’t like Bay’s contract compared to Beltran. Bay is owed 18M for about three more years. Beltran gets 20M this year and then we can go shopping again next winter.

Whaddaya' think about Chris Young?
I know he’s a risk, but the upside could be huge. Doesn’t seem like there is that much interest in him. I’m a gambler…I’d roll the dice here.
I'm guessing the SP, not RF.
They would have to raise the dugout and clubhouse ceiling by a foot. Very expensive renovation.
Seriously, he’s worth a try to me. I think we can pile up about 3 injury prone arms and somene might stick and provide #3 or #4 style innings. Too bad Bedard got away. We could throw in Harden…

I Like Your Thinking..
He’s not my top choice.. I kinda like Duchscherer (I probably messed that one up!) personally. If Webb could get another 4-5 MPH back on his fastball he’d be perfect.
I'm still holding out hope on Lee, for some reason.
Now that the Yankees are giving 7 it’s going to be hard for anyone to match, but I am still praying that we’re one of the mystery teams!
Maggs will sign with us by tomorrow. Not worried about that.
They should of went after Lee first
If they wanted Lee they should of went after him first before signing V Mart.Lee would of given us a chance to win with the lineup we have now. They should of made him a 7yr 150 to 160 mill offer right up front if he would sign right away, sort of what the Nat’s did with Werth.
don't think we have that $$$

Did the Nats have contracts like Miggy and Verlander before Werth?
No, their payroll is basically nothing
and the Lerner family has plenty of money to spend on that team.
I know I'm just wishing
I thought maybe Jhonny P & V-Mart would have contacted Ol’ Cliffy. Not to sure if it would have even mattered but seeing as they did all play together.

But that kind of money for Crawford and Werth is ridiculous and we were priced right out of those contracts. The same may be true for Lee. As DD said, we have our two $20 M players in Cabrera and Verlander and can’t really add a 3rd. A bummer, but it is what it is. The offseason ain’t done yet.

"And what would you like for Christmas little boy?"
I’m not picky Santa, just give me a #3 SP who can toss 180-200 innings, and bring back Maggs for no more than 2/$24..
What do you guys think of Harden v. Webb v. any other SP who can’t stay healthy?
I’d LOVE Harden to start the season as our #3.. and to leave Coke in the pen.
while i like guys like Harden and Webb
You still have to figure for someone to come out of the bullpen/minors, because I’m skeptical you’ll get anthing close to 180 innings out of either guy.

they have it in random places down here in GA
Though I would glady trade it for some of your namesake which they do not have down here

They also don't have that here
Larry bell had a falling out with NY distributors back in the day, so they can’t be found. Founders just made it here about 6 months ago, and that’s been a blessing.
I'm in Ohio..
We’ve got all types of Faygo here..
I’d trade you that for some Moxie, just to teach people here about how TERRIBLE it is.
Agreed.
Harden is GREAT when he’s on, and he’s not going to get even the 1 yr. deal Texas signed him to last year.
I say give him 2 yrs- 8 mil.. or 1 yr- 3 +incentives..
It doesn’t break our bank, and if it works out for us, it could mean the division title (assuming Max and Justin pitch like last year, and Rick did coming back from AAA)..
Incentives, baby
All based on innings. If he’s throwing, he’s getting guys out. I’d be thrilled if we got 150 innings of Rich Harden.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
Sign 2 SP
On the cheap side, maybe an injury risk with them, to an incentive loaded contract. Harden, Maine, plenty of those types out there. Just hope you get a good to average year out of 1 of them. I still don’t like the idea of Coke moving to the rotation. And Gallaraga might only win 4 or 5 games and that’s unacceptable. Right now the #4 and 5 spots in the rotation look like a sinkhole to me.
To his credit
Armando suffered from an extreme lack of run support, so I think he could probably get 9 or 10 wins if that improves. Maybe getting a few Ws will help his confidence, something that seems to be his biggest problem.
But Coke was the worst idea I’ve heard this off season. I hope I get to eat those words when he wins 15 games for us.
I like the injury-risk, low-cost guys. There’s gotta be a trade out there, especially with Nolasco on the block.
He'd have to win them from the pen.
I don’t think he gets 15 starts for us, not if we are contenders.
I was for the Alexander trade when it happened, and I'd do 'er again!

I wonder about having Martinez catching Armando
Maybe he’ll trust Victor enough not to wave off his signals, as I kinda get the impression he did with Laird and Avila. Armando does lack confidence, but he can be damned stubborn about not challenging hitters, too. Maybe victor can give him some ooomph.

Never press the red button.
Once favorites for Webb..
The Cubs are now denying interest in him anymore..
Apparently signing their sub-.200 hitting 1B has cost them the ability to sign a starter, and/or bullpen help now..
You guys make fun of the Royals, but I’d rather root KC than CHC at this point..
Still can't believe
That the Cubs spent $10M on a sub .200 hitter. I don’t care if he does hit 40 HRs.

Not really
It means Maggs and no other free agents. There’s still the option of trades or adding the right guy at the right price: DD and Illich just want to spend right.
Deputy Editor, Bless You Boys
Free Scott Sizemore!
Then why sign Maggs
If the Tigers are still trying to build around Verlander and Cabrera then there is no sense in signing Maggs.Let the young guys play and see what they can do.Also i don’t understand why they signed V Mart then. They could of signed Oliva a lot cheaper to a 2yr deal and signed a DH and saved 30 mill.
Four years
They signed VMart for four years. If we don’t get that extra oomph this year, we’re still only a player or two away next year, and in 2013, and in 2014. Hopefully, our minors produce a shiney new SP or 2 in that time frame.
I was hoping for news during these meetings that would make me feel like we’re in the mix for 2011, but that hasn’t happened. There’s still a lot of time to spruce up our 2011, but I feel good about our look for 2012, 2013, and 2014.
First, 2011 will be competitive without any further additions. I think our team is slightly better than it was in 2010. We were mostly competitive in 2010. I think 2011’s team can win 85 games.
Second, we’ve got the same core headed into 2012. The only player we will probably lose is Guillen, and I think that will certainly help matters when if comes to payroll. Next year, one VMart-style free agent signing coupled with the emergence of Turner or Oliver as a legit rotational candidate could make for a very good team.
I
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
I Still don't see signing V mart then
It would of made more sense to sign Olivo to split time with Avila we could of got him 2yr 7 mill and he has some power and can catch. With V Mart he will be only a DH in 2yrs.We should of used that money to upgrade the pitching. If we are builing around Verlander and Cabrera then we need to play our kids win or lose and see what we have.Maggs is getting old let Wells and Boesch play then.
If you don't agree with that angle, than how about this one?
VMart will generate12.5 million dollars worth of revenue in 2011. Olivo won’t
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
That's what I got from it too..
I don’t understand what DD is thinking this offseason!
This is the year more so than ever that we have $$ to spend, and we are just sitting on it (minus V-Mart, whose signing I didn’t LOVE)..
I’m looking at Passan’s FA list on Yahoo for ideas.. still plenty of guys I’d love to take on..
What he was saying . . .
. . . was that we have to build rather than enter into a third long-term, $20 milion+ a year contract. I don’t think that rules out much other than Lee, at this point.
by rea on Dec 9, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions
That's what I meant
In terms of FAs, Maggs and done. It’s all about the secret trade.
I think I finally have the 3 names I'm hoping for..
- Magglio Ordonez
- Rich Harden
- Chris Capuano
Caps looked really good at the end of last season.. I think he could be a nice little pickup for us, and again.. puts Coke back in our pen.
How long are the winter meetings?
I thought they were only for three days…
Go for it

- Brad Penny
- Brandon Webb
- Justin Duchsherer

About 25M total (one year of Cliff Lee). They occupy one rotational spot and each one starts once every 25 games. That should keep at least three of them healthy.

Breaking News the Tigers about to sign corner outfielder
They have offered Don Kelly a long term contract to play rightfield. They have offered to double his meal money and expect him to sign anytime now.
I don't know if I can take this kinda of PUNishment.
Kurt’s going to have to open a new thread just to stop the madness.
Warning, content may include sarcasm.
Scared
Well I am officially afraid now. If Martinez and Benoit are the onlt moves the Tigers make, we are officially a 3rd or 4th place team in the Central. I hope I’m wrong but if that’s it, it is a total waste of Verlander and Cabby’s talent. Might as well just offer them to the Yankee’s and Red Sox to.
Boston screwed themselves good
this off-season. I think Epstein will be run out of Boston in a year or two.
They’ll be blowing about $300 Million on 2 players that I don’t consider great.
Crawford was very good because he brought the Rays some value. Now he’s just an overhyped, overglorified speedster with some pop.
Crawford has just a lifetime .296 Batting Avg with only a .337 OBP. Now he’ll play LF in Fenway Park, where his speed will be rather useless.
Adrian Gonzalez is good, but he’s still just a lifetime .284 hitter. He’s not even close to being as good as Miguel Cabrera, but he’ll be getting paid like he is.
good afternoon
If their payroll is approximately maxed
Then totally. Of course, with the purchase of Arsenal, they could be outspending the Yanks or being outspent by the Royals in five years. Top level EPL teams are insanely high-variance investments.
But they may have two titles by then
The other thing you only play half your games at home so Crawford will be just fine.
