well...

That’s one more player we can get out of our system. Move on, nothing to see here!

How much are the Red Sox going to spend? They had a 7 year deal on the table for CL as well. wow. They still have to pay Adrian Gonzalez too.

Who cares, honestly

as long as we’re not the ones paying for those ridiculous contracts.

That lineup is scary good

Better than Yankees, I think. Gonzalez, Youkalis, Pedroia, Crawford, Papi…5 superstars (although Papi’s star is falling). Nice complementary pieces in Scutaro, Ellsbury, and Drew. Their rotation isn’t too shabby either with Lester, Bucholz, Beckett, and Lackey.

That’s my new favorite to with the AL.

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

i was thinking that too

as much as i loathe the red sox, at the same time i am delighted because i know the yankees are going to have a hard time beating them. Its a good thing

hands down favorites

But now I guess it’s a sure thing the Yankees will get Lee.

You said you don’t care since we aren’t paying for those contracts, but look at that lineup. If we put together a team like that I don’t really think you’d mind what we were paying them.

All I know is, it sure must be a good week to be a Red Sox fan. I’d still be pumped by the addition of Gonzalez and now Crawford on top of that… geez.

Didn’t think it was possible but now I hate the Sox even more. Which sucks because I really like Gonzalez and Crawford as players, just hate the team.

That Peña deal

definitely not worse

10 mil is a lot but at just 1 year it’s not too much invested. they lost out on Dunn so they wanted to bring in a power hitting 1B. 10 mil for 3 or 4 years would have been worse that Werth’s

by tigers22 on Dec 9, 2010 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

Yep

One year is no big deal. Lots of upside to Pena…last year was probably as bad as it will get and he still hit 28 HR and got on base about 33%.

high spending teams

I only care in the sense that another AL team is stronger than ever. We are fighting for a wild card and it usually lives out east.

I think it’s fair to be upset with the system, to be chapped that they are heavy hitters and we are not, and even call them evil. But when they sign very good players for a lot of money I don’t think it’s fair to call the contracts bad or even ridiculous. They paid market price. These are the teams that win championships more regularly than the “have nots”. Having more good players, regardless of the contract makes you better, not worse. In their situation. the opportunity cost is just not as great. Find another reliever for a million bucks a year? Great! Tack him on too.

by The Eric on Dec 9, 2010 8:08 AM EST reply actions

"Market Price"

is a slippery term to use when you are talking about baseball contracts.

by rif23 on Dec 9, 2010 8:28 AM EST up reply actions

ask the Yankees

About the market for Cliff Lee. He’ll get a “ridiculous” contract. But only because they would be able to get him for any less.

It’s a market – Players want more, teams want to pay less. Competition, economics and stuff. Limited resources, price elasticity of demand, and other fancy terms I can’t explain.

Warning, content may include sarcasm.

by The Eric on Dec 9, 2010 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

Just because you couldn’t get a player for less doesn’t mean that it is a good contract, or even that you are getting a player at “Market Value”. The way bidding on individual players in baseball occurs actually basically guarantees that the winning team is paying above, often significantly what the players market value should be.
This is almost assuredly going to be a very bad contract. Being a “have” and signing big contracts doesn’t guarantee success (see: Mets, Cubs, Dodgers, oh ya and Tigers).

True

But people buying a new Lexus have a better chance of getting to their destination than those buying a used Kia.

Lexus sell a an exorbitant price. There is a definite premium for the car, but one that Lexus can demand on the market. A premium that I can’t afford and I believe is a waste of money compared to the Kia. But, if I HAD to make it across the country…I’ll still take the new Lexus.

Remember The 2008 Tigers

Our lineup was supposed to score 20 runs a game over & over again & run away with everything even the World Series, We bought a World Series Championship with this team.

1-Granderson
2-Polanco
3-Magleo
4-Cabrera
5-Guillen
6-Sheffield
7-Thames
8-Rodriguez
9-Renteria

That lineup was more fearsome than the Red Sox lineup right now & we finnished Dead Last 14 Games out of first. Their lineup does not Guarantee them the World Series Pennant.

But it is looking really fearsome though right now.

by TigersFan1957 on Dec 9, 2010 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

Tigers have no chance

The one year the Tiger have the money to add a big time talent and they are still sitting on the sidelines. The Tigers have never won the division and will be hard pressed to beat the White Sox or Twins this year. And with what the Red Sox have just added and what the Yankee’s already have they don’t have much chance at the wild card either. The only chance now would be if they sign Lee which they don’t have the guts to do.They should just trade for Gonselanny and tell us all that he is going to help us win.The Tiger’s won 81 games last year and this team is no better then that team.Just the facts.

by swish330 on Dec 9, 2010 8:24 AM EST reply actions

Totally disagree

This is easily an 83 win team :)

Seriously, they are 2 pieces away from seriously contending with Twins and ChiSox. Those two pieces are a legit #3 or 5 hitter and a legit #3 starter. Both are still very attainable between now and spring training. Of course, I’d like to see something develop soon…

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

by momotigers on Dec 9, 2010 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

I'd argue that we're really only one of those pieces away from contending

but I won’t complain for a second if we get both. We’re not far off. If some of our role players perform up to their potential this year and/or we get one or two of the young guys to step up, this team will be right in the thick of things by the end of the season.

by Rob Rogacki on Dec 9, 2010 9:14 AM EST up reply actions

If that one piece is Lee

I think we are two peices away unless the one piece is Lee.The first is we need a quality starter in the rotation. The second is we need a proven MLB corner outfielder who can bat #3 or #5.Any team that has Verlander and Cabrera has a chance.

by swish330 on Dec 9, 2010 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

I disagree

Unless we get Lee or maybe Grenkie & Magglio back we might have a chance, but as of right now, our Starting Pitching Rotation, we have two pitchers that will give us 6 or 7 innings per game on a regular basis. The other 3 will not get far into the 6th inning on most starts, at that rate the Pen will be tired & in shambles by mid June again. Carlos Guillen & Zumia will probibally be on the disabled list by June also.

As of right now Minus any Lee or Grenkie & Magglio I see us fighting for fourth place & well under .500, closer to a .425 team.

I can only hope I am wrong. Everyone stays healthy & the young guys catch fire.

I am a dreamer.

by TigersFan1957 on Dec 9, 2010 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

The Tigers are right where they were at the end of the season

Short a No. 3 or 5 hitter,
short one good 2- 3 starting pitcher
short one late inning reliever.

Add V Mart, lose our 2 and 3 hitters
Add Benoit, lose Coke from the pen
Add Coke to the rotation, and that means nothing until he proves something

If you survived 2003, you can get through this!

by Tigerdog1 on Dec 9, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

I've been thinking of doing a fanpost on this

I’ve been comparing to Spring Training 2010, not the end of 2010. If we’re going to compare to the end of the season, we are most certainly better than October 1, 2010 because we didn’t have Maggs or Vmart or Benoit.

If we compare to the start of 2010, I think we’re slightly better because:
1.) We didn’t have a proven 3 and 5 hitter then either. We had Maggs and Guillen? I can say that we probably felt more confident with Guillen than our current options for #3 or 5, but I can’t figure of for the life of me why.
2.) Our starting rotation was as bad last year to start the season as it is right now. Bonderman deserved no more confidence than Galaragga currently deserves and Willis certainly didn’t make any of us confident.
3.) We have the exact same disposal of late inning options as we did last year. I might even argue that Benoit is more of a late inning option this year than Coke was considered last year.

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

You're nuts

If you think this team is no better than last year. We’ve got upgrades in a few positions going in. Last year our starting shortstop was Adam Everett. Peralta may not be a superstar but he’s definitely an upgrade. We’ve got V-Mart splitting catching duties with Avila instead of Laird. That’s a huge upgrade. V-Mart easily drives in 50 more runs than Laird. Our rotation is about as good as last year and Porcello should rebound a bit. If we do get Ordonez back and maybe find a better #5 starter this team will easily be on track to win 88+ games.

by Sutelc on Dec 9, 2010 8:54 AM EST up reply actions

Not nuts

We play the Yankee’s,the Red Sox’s and the White Sox’s they have or are going to improve there team. Will this team win more or less games against them than last year. The way it stands now the anwser is less.If we stay the same and everybody we play is better we will win less games.

by swish330 on Dec 9, 2010 9:07 AM EST up reply actions

Everyone plays the Yankees, Red Sox and White Sox

The Yankees and Red Sox, last time I checked, aren’t even in our division. If we go .500 against the White Sox (a tough task any season, apparently) I think we’re in good shape.

by Rob Rogacki on Dec 9, 2010 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

Signing VMart is a start towards not staying the same.

There’s still 2.5 months before pitchers and catcher report, plenty of time to make changes yet. Besides, the process has already begun, with the Martinez signing.

I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.

by ahtrap on Dec 9, 2010 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

Um

We’ll probably upgrade at catcher and second base due to Avila and one of Sizemore and Rhymes maturing. We’ve upgraded at shortstop with Jhonny Peralta (no, really) and in left field by handing the job off to Raburn. And DH got a major bump with V-Mart.

Plus DD isn’t done. Calm down already: it’s been like 2 months.

Yankees

got pushed into offering that 7th year to Lee. Gee, you think the Sox getting CC had anything to do with that? A tip of the hat to Theo on this one, getting a great player and forcing your #1 competition into a panic move at the same time.

by rif23 on Dec 9, 2010 8:31 AM EST reply actions

Ordonez

I think the Crawford signing actually helps us with Ordonez. The Red Sox were sounding like our most serious competition for Magglio so with them out of the way his price could actually go down. Anyone else who’s interested won’t have as much money to throw at him for us to have to outbid.

I’m a little bummed to see both the Red Sox and Yanks (assuming they get Lee) improve so much at the same time though. Tampa is completely screwed now that all the young talent that made up their core for the past couple of years is outgrowing their budget.

Really wish more National League teams had swooped in and taken Crawford and Lee out of the AL so our direct competition would be weaker. But hey, at least the White Sox and Twins haven’t done anything to drastically improve yet. Dunn was a nice move for Chicago but I think by March we’ll be the clear winners in offseason moves for the Central. Especially of Minny loses Pavano. Sounds like the Brewers are pretty hot for him right now.

by Sutelc on Dec 9, 2010 8:49 AM EST reply actions

sorry...

Minnesota is losing a lot of their bullpen pieces and their rotation aside from Liriano is pretty bad. I’m not trying to trash Minnesota but I think we have a solid shot. Chicago is who I’m really worried about.

by JAYRC on Dec 9, 2010 8:59 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah

Especially if Carlos Quentin or any of last year’s other underperformers rebound. Chicago could be pretty nasty this year since they already have a solid rotation. But still, those damn Twins somehow stay in it every year no matter how many weaknesses they have on paper. I would like nothing more than to see them finish in last place for a decade but I swear you could slap Twins uniforms on the fracking Pirates and they’d win 90 games.

Yeppers, they do indeed always find a way

I’m also curious to see what Joe Nathan can do this season. They will more than likely be losing 2-3 key pieces of that pen though. IMO the pen is what won a lot of their games the last few years.

Not mention Minnesota also just traded JJ Hardy for scraps

They might start Tsuyoshi Nishioka at SS (I’ve heard he’d probably be better suited to 2B in MLB), Alexi Casilla is probably going to start at 2B instead of Orlando Hudson (lol), no one knows how Justin Morneau is going to come back, and they probably won’t get another 1.0 OPS season out of Jim Thome (that’s if he even goes back to them).

Add the potential loss of Carl Pavano with the bullpen losses, and they’re one Francisco Liriano injury away from being a pretty mediocre team.

This is all going to make it that much more painful when they inevitably win the division next year anyway.

by ozymandius1024 on Dec 9, 2010 10:29 AM EST up reply actions

They seem to play better without Morneau, anyway

First thing this morning I go to MLB Rumors and look at all the transactions for yesterday and see nothing done by the Tigers. I guess I shouldn’t say I was surprised, but was definitely disappointed. Seeing guys like Bartlett and Hardy moving makes me think that signing Peralta so fast might have been a mistake. Bartlett would have been a great fit for us. But it is what it is. We still need that other hitter for the 3 or 5 hole and still need the SP. Lee to the Yanks is a sure thing

With Crawford a Red Sock (is that gramatically correct?) they are loaded with left-handed bats. Since the Yanks play them so much, it only makes sense they have a southpaw loaded rotation. Plus, they are the Yankees so they’ll spend whateverit takes. I expect the word to coem down today.

I agree with Sutelc that CC signing with the Sox means Maggs is more likely to be a Tiger next year. Let’s do this!!!!

Garza

Is all but off of our list now too. I heard the Pirates are shopping Maholm if their deal with Atlanta finally works out. He’d be a decent grab for a competition spot for our #5 I think.

These Winter Meetings have been terribly boring. If we didn’t have all of that money come off the books I’d understand.. I guess the Martinez signing just isn’t what I had in mind for us this offseason..

If the only thing we were going to do this offseason is sign V Mart,we should of passed and kept our draft pick.I don’t get it are we trying to win now or are we trying to win in 2012 or 2013 or when.26 yrs since our last World Championship and still counting.I have faith in DD but this years plan dosen’t look very good right now.

We need a starter first

I don’t think we have much of a chance unless we find a quality starter first.I think we should look for that first. If we don’t find that then we should just play the guy’s we have.By playing Boesch and Wells we will see if one of them can step up and deliver before we trade them only to be sorry later.

Agree completely

Plus, I don’t like Bay’s contract compared to Beltran. Bay is owed 18M for about three more years. Beltran gets 20M this year and then we can go shopping again next winter.

They would have to raise the dugout and clubhouse ceiling by a foot. Very expensive renovation.

Seriously, he’s worth a try to me. I think we can pile up about 3 injury prone arms and somene might stick and provide #3 or #4 style innings. Too bad Bedard got away. We could throw in Harden…

But that kind of money for Crawford and Werth is ridiculous and we were priced right out of those contracts. The same may be true for Lee. As DD said, we have our two $20 M players in Cabrera and Verlander and can’t really add a 3rd. A bummer, but it is what it is. The offseason ain’t done yet.

Sign 2 SP

On the cheap side, maybe an injury risk with them, to an incentive loaded contract. Harden, Maine, plenty of those types out there. Just hope you get a good to average year out of 1 of them. I still don’t like the idea of Coke moving to the rotation. And Gallaraga might only win 4 or 5 games and that’s unacceptable. Right now the #4 and 5 spots in the rotation look like a sinkhole to me.

by KeystoneTiger on Dec 9, 2010 2:31 PM EST reply actions

To his credit

Armando suffered from an extreme lack of run support, so I think he could probably get 9 or 10 wins if that improves. Maybe getting a few Ws will help his confidence, something that seems to be his biggest problem.

But Coke was the worst idea I’ve heard this off season. I hope I get to eat those words when he wins 15 games for us.

I like the injury-risk, low-cost guys. There’s gotta be a trade out there, especially with Nolasco on the block.

Maybe he’ll trust Victor enough not to wave off his signals, as I kinda get the impression he did with Laird and Avila. Armando does lack confidence, but he can be damned stubborn about not challenging hitters, too. Maybe victor can give him some ooomph.

Then why sign Maggs

If the Tigers are still trying to build around Verlander and Cabrera then there is no sense in signing Maggs.Let the young guys play and see what they can do.Also i don’t understand why they signed V Mart then. They could of signed Oliva a lot cheaper to a 2yr deal and signed a DH and saved 30 mill.

by swish330 on Dec 9, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Four years

They signed VMart for four years. If we don’t get that extra oomph this year, we’re still only a player or two away next year, and in 2013, and in 2014. Hopefully, our minors produce a shiney new SP or 2 in that time frame.

I was hoping for news during these meetings that would make me feel like we’re in the mix for 2011, but that hasn’t happened. There’s still a lot of time to spruce up our 2011, but I feel good about our look for 2012, 2013, and 2014.

First, 2011 will be competitive without any further additions. I think our team is slightly better than it was in 2010. We were mostly competitive in 2010. I think 2011’s team can win 85 games.

Second, we’ve got the same core headed into 2012. The only player we will probably lose is Guillen, and I think that will certainly help matters when if comes to payroll. Next year, one VMart-style free agent signing coupled with the emergence of Turner or Oliver as a legit rotational candidate could make for a very good team.

It would of made more sense to sign Olivo to split time with Avila we could of got him 2yr 7 mill and he has some power and can catch. With V Mart he will be only a DH in 2yrs.We should of used that money to upgrade the pitching. If we are builing around Verlander and Cabrera then we need to play our kids win or lose and see what we have.Maggs is getting old let Wells and Boesch play then.

Well I am officially afraid now. If Martinez and Benoit are the onlt moves the Tigers make, we are officially a 3rd or 4th place team in the Central. I hope I’m wrong but if that’s it, it is a total waste of Verlander and Cabby’s talent. Might as well just offer them to the Yankee’s and Red Sox to.

Boston screwed themselves good

this off-season. I think Epstein will be run out of Boston in a year or two.

They’ll be blowing about $300 Million on 2 players that I don’t consider great.

Crawford was very good because he brought the Rays some value. Now he’s just an overhyped, overglorified speedster with some pop.
Crawford has just a lifetime .296 Batting Avg with only a .337 OBP. Now he’ll play LF in Fenway Park, where his speed will be rather useless.

Adrian Gonzalez is good, but he’s still just a lifetime .284 hitter. He’s not even close to being as good as Miguel Cabrera, but he’ll be getting paid like he is.

good afternoon

If their payroll is approximately maxed

Then totally. Of course, with the purchase of Arsenal, they could be outspending the Yanks or being outspent by the Royals in five years. Top level EPL teams are insanely high-variance investments.

But they may have two titles by then

The other thing you only play half your games at home so Crawford will be just fine.
