Beer suggestions

I’m a fan of beer. I like to drink it, and I like suggestions on it. I just tried Tyranena’s Bitter Woman IPA, it was ok, but I’ve had better. Anyways, who likes beer and who has good suggestions.

BTW, I’m from Kalamazoo, so if anyone fancies beer but hasn’t tried Bell’s, you’re missing out.

I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

Ales or Lagers, sweet, strong, Let me know some you like and I’ll throw ya some suggestions.

Any and all

I’ll try anything once, especially if it is beer, but some of my favorites are Arcadia’s Whitson, Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale, Sierra Nevada’s Pale Ale and Michelob’s Amber Bach.

Here's some of my favorites...

Schnieder Aventinus: A German Wheat DoppleBock, very obscure style but very tasty, kinda a sweet malty flavor, very complex, and strong, I think it’s around 9% ABV. You can only find it in a bottle.

by j16941 on Feb 16, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

If you like Michelob Amber Bock, you gotta try Shiner Bock

From a Brewery in Texas, Great Bock Beer, and not made by Anheiser Busch.

shiner rules

I live a couple hours from the brewery. the Bohemian Black Lager and new 101 Pilsner are super good, too

by allikazoo on Feb 16, 2010 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

I like the Shiner Family Pack

6 pack with 6 different beers – Bock, Light, Blonde, Black, Smokehaus and Hefeweizen. Suggested drinking order: Light, Blonde, Hefeweizen, Bock, Smokehaus, Black.

And probably my New Favorite, Delirium Tremens.

A Belgian Strong Pale, High in alcohol, but surprisingly easy drinkin, and delicious.

I'm imagining

that this stuff could actually give you the DT’s…

by ChrisDTX on Feb 16, 2010 5:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, you gotta be careful with this one.

I don’t like alot of Belgian Strong Ales, alot of them have too strong of an alcohol flavor. But this beer is Freakin Incredible. Tons of flavor and really smooth. Highly Recommended!

"best beer in the world"?

i thought this claim was ballsy and arrogant. then i tasted it and had to say “damn, they’re right”. this is great stuff and their delirium noel for xmas was the best thing santa got me last year.

Where's Zappatista?

That man knows his beer. You might have to give him a holler on Twitter for some suggestions.

I'm from Kalamazoo too...

And Two Hearted is one of my faves…. Too bad Oberon was pretty bad this past year.

You should try Fat tire out of Chicago. It’s a great tailgating beer… I think Tiffany’s will special order it on request.

by peazgrl on Feb 16, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

If you like the Oberon

You should try Arcadia’s Whitsun, their version of Oberon/Blue Moon. They have it on tap at Shakespear’s or you can get bottles at Tiffany’s (or I’ve even seen it at Meijer’s.)

I haven't been drinking much beer of late

but the tried and true faves are Boddingtons, Newcastle or Bass if you’re in a Limey mood. For the microbrew snob, any of the Victory products are nice (Philly represent!). Their Hop Devil is good if you’re into, you know, hops. Any of the Sam Adams seasonal brews are outstanding (though regular Sam Adams is teh pisswater). For the cost conscious/hipster doofus set, nothing says class like an ice cold PBR. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention any of the fine products from our neighbors to the north – the usual suspects are all good (Moosehead, Labatt). I went through an Anchor Steam phase not so long ago, mostly through watching Giants games (Kung Fu Panda!).

by ChrisDTX on Feb 16, 2010 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t like any Sam Adams (at least out of bottles. Everything’s better on tap). I think it’s the most overrated beer out there and because of that I think the price point is too high.

19 yr. old women are very much annoying...

trust me, I’m not much older and have to spend more time than I desire around them.

Theres only one girl my own age who I don’t really find annoying right now. Hopefully the rest of them will grow out of it.

by madpoopz on Feb 16, 2010 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

I'm five years older than most of the people in my class, so I know what you mean

Half the girls (who are 21 or 22) think that miniskirts, fishnet stockings, and stilettos constitute “professional” pharmacy attire. And all they talk about are parties and bars. I’m also hoping they’ll outgrow it, but I don’t know because I never did that stuff when I was 21.

I don't know what it is...

maybe I’m weird but I’m not into parties or drinking or any typical 20-21 yr. old behaviors…I just like to sit around and talk. It doesn’t have to be a deep conversation but I don’t know, that’s when I’m having the most fun. Of course my last job pretty much ruined my chances of ever acting like a “normal” 20 year old but hey, you are who you are and you can’t regret being you.

So now we all know a little bit more about madpoopz.

Ahh. I loved the bars/party scene (and still do). However, it’s much more laid back and a lot less “lets do shots and chug beers because I’m a man that bought his own 30 pack.” It’s humorous to be at a party that has kids that are 20 and 21 now and think “holy crap, i sucked as a 21 year old.”

probably one of the oldest who come here. That being said. Most all my friends are at least 10-15 years younger than me. On the opposite end of the spectrum I find that most people my age act old which I find very annoying They act like we are all dying.
I still have 5 years before i m eligible for my AARP card. and I am not going to act old if I don’t feel like it. I love life and love being alive, unlike some of the people I know in their 40’s i am not ready retire or watch 60 minutes on Sunday night. Just a bit but most of my friends are within 5 years of me. I find younger folks funny; they’re doing what they want and if I get a chuckle out of how horrible they are dressing on purpose, well it is a bonus. I mean, surviving the 80s and 90s, fashion wise, makes me wonder why people would war those things when they have more choices.

Anyone else have this problem?

I am very, very glad that the KY ad is gone, but now I keep getting an ad for Diet Coke in the box above the Fanposts section. It’s one of those ads that expand if you accidentally roll over it, but even it’s not expanded, it won’t let me click on the link to the off-topic thread. My cursor just remains a cursor (and if I try to right-click on the link, I get the Adobe Flash menu). So far, all I can do is refresh the page until I get another ad in that box, which is annoying. I’m using Firefox if that makes any difference.

by SabreRoseTiger on Feb 15, 2010 7:50 PM EST reply actions

Yes, I've had it too.

I’ve been clicking on “All Fanposts” at the bottom of the list to bypass it.

by StringTheory on Feb 15, 2010 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

I have Firefox

You can download an add-on called Adblock, and then when the ad expands (and I had the same problem) you can right click and add it to the blocked ads by using the popup menu. It’s either “Adblock Plus: block image” or “Adblock Plus: block frame.”

by madpoopz on Feb 16, 2010 9:36 AM EST up reply actions

Meijer as well.

but regardless I’ve never had a Paczki that made me say “wow.” I’m not much of a sweets person anyway. About the most sugar I ever crave is from Pepsi, which is probably more of a caffeine addiction.

But to get OT with the OT: Does it bother anybody else that the “throwback” editions of Pepsi and Mtn. Dew say “made with real sugar” on them? I mean I know that high fructose corn syrup isn’t exactly good for you but it most definitely isn’t fake. I mean if memory serves me correctly fake things don’t even exist. But if that little quip doesn’t anger you, do you prefer the “real” versions of said soft drinks or the “fake” ones?

And another thing carbonation is anything but soft. If my memory serves me correctly Pepsi doesn’t rate much higher than battery acid in terms of ph.

I don't think I've had any of the "throwback" ones to know the difference

I do know that I prefer sugar/HFCS to aspartame. Splenda is okay as far as artificial sweeteners go, however (but Pepsi doesn’t use Splenda).

the throwback's to me are hit and miss...

they tend to have a bit more bite but I fail to see any improvement with the Mtn. Dew. Overall I’ll take the fructose over the sucrose.

I think it's a Polish Detroiter thing

My Polish-Canadian friends know about paczki, but the general public is pretty clueless about them. I seem to recall picking up a half-dozen around here a few years ago around this time of year and thinking they were fairly jelly-doughnut-like, but a little different and quite good.

Formatting question

I’m trying to create a FanPost and it’s a long one, so I typed it up in Microsoft Word beforehand so I could just copy and paste into the field. However, when I preview it, I get a bunch of HTML crap surrounding my text in the preview window. I don’t want to publish the FanPost if that stuff will actually show up in the post, but I don’t know how to get rid of it without typing everything out (which I don’t want to do if I can avoid it).

Baseball Manager [games]

Do you like play games like Baseball Modul etc. ??*

So i have question – In your opinion what is the best baseball manager ??

by Grzesio on Feb 21, 2010 8:18 AM EST reply actions

Well...

I’ve either gotten popular enough around here where my name is a curiosity or maybe my name is just that funny (i’m looking at you jpolut). But I guess it may be interesting to tell the boring tale of where the name comes from.

Three or four years ago my brother and I were playing an elimination match on Timesplitters 2 for PS2 in the chinese restaurant level. To keep it from being boring we added the best bots the game had to offer (which isn’t saying much). Now there are 2 bathrooms in the level. Basic strategy if your looking to rack up the kill count is to just camp in one of the bathrooms and wait for the bots to come aimlessly wondering in. So naturally this is what I did. I found the bathroom, squatted my character in the stall, and proceeded to open fire upon whoever came in. Now when I say “squatted my character” I hope you realized the same pun that I did at the moment of happening because being my weird self I decided to break into a separate, comedic, character. This character for the remaining of my time in that bathroom was a wannabe thug type known as MadPoopz. So I would scream things out like “BITCH! YOU JUST GOT CAPPED BY MADPOOPZ!” or “THERE IS NO CURE FOR THIS DISEASE!” or “IF YOU THOUGHT PRISON RAPE WAS BAD, JUST WAIT TILL MADPOOPZ!”

And thus a new name was born and it stuck and is the name I do use on video games, here, AIM, and probably more too come.

This is the story of madpoopz. Less disgusting than you guys thought, right?

by madpoopz on Feb 21, 2010 9:26 AM EST reply actions

the same strategy

I have employed in RPGs. Just wait until the stupid victims come wandering along, knock them out, then pile the bodies up behind you for your friends to loot. :)

mine's not nearly as interesting

When I started posting I wanted a screen name that was unusual and more general than referring to a team or player, and I love classical music especially baroque music, plus there are artistic and unusual connotations to the word, so I went with Baroque because I figured no one else on a hockey blog would think of using it.

So far it’s worked out pretty well – it’s certainly been memorable to many people. :)

Sorry, gotta stick with Stevie Y and Babcock

Mostly Stevie Y…I grew up cheering for that guy, and watching Hockey Night in Canada, and, as odd as it is, when it comes to Olympic Hockey, I’m still cheering for the Canadians over the US, even if the only Red Wing on either team is an American.

The first time the NHLers played in the Olympics, in 1998, the Americans had those guys I hated as a Red Wings fan. You know, assholes like Chelios and Hull? It was a little different in 2002, but I was still sticking with Yzerman and Shanny. And that sentiment has continued to this day.

You just wait, you bastards.

We’re still gonna win this thing. Brodeur was a moron in net tonight; I’d bet my left nut that Luongo’s going to start in the quarters against Germany.

(You have no idea how big a deal this game, and this tournament, is up here. The press conference that announced the Olympic team was carried live on national television, for example.)

Go Canada Go.

by frisbeepilot on Feb 21, 2010 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t get why Bordeur was starting. I don’t think he’s looked sharp at any point in this tourney and NJ has been running him into the ground with virtually no breaks. And that doesn’t touch the fact that if I had to choose one goalie in the world to win a 7 game series, I am taking Luongo every day of the week. That’s my only criticism of Babcock thus far (granted, the difference between Luongo and Marty is negligible, but still…).
