On Johnny Damon, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski isn't talking
Pitchers and catchers report Feb. 18. Until then, it's a constant barrage of Johnny Damon updates. Enjoy!
Today's update? A non-update.
Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski had nothing to say about the entire thing, which some view as telling but I tell you is nothing.
Dombrowski's statements include:
"It’s a situation for us where we have not discussed free agent players in public," Dombrowski said. "And I don’t see any benefit in doing that in this situation."
(MLive)
"We're not close to making any kind of deals at this point."
Fox Sports' Jon Paul Morosi tried to read the tea leaves a bit -- or invite speculation anyway, when he tweeted:
Then he said: "We are always open to improving our club." Sure sounds like a non-denial. Detroit fans, feel free to speculate.
So while I am tempted to speculate in Dombrowski's parlance that means a deal is imminent, it actually doesn't mean a thing at all. In the past a non-denial like that has occurred before a signing. In the past, a non-denial has been because there's absolutely nothing up.
Say it with me:
Feb. 18.
Feb. 18.
Feb. 18.
In the meantime, you can check out what John Parent of Tigers Tracks has to say about the possibility of signing Damon.
Because I'm fresh out of words.

That's classic posturing talk
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tigers are making a push at this point.

I will say that I have always liked how tight-lipped the organization is about everything. Makes it very frustrating and fun at the same time to try to predict what they’ll do.

I hate when nothing happens. This lull is boring me! Let’s get to the baseball already!

Tigers will do somthing significant
They cannot go into the season as the roster stands now. They need a bat and better yet a left handed bat. Damon is as good as any options our there, and there would be plenty of opportunity to get all the players some time in the field as well as at DH,.
