What do you think of the Johnny Damon signing?

I guess I could have tacked this poll on the previous post, but I forgot. We've all been weighing in with our thoughts on Johnny Damon on the comments section, but now it's time for a raise of hands.

Poll
What do you think of the reported one-year, $8 million deal between the Tigers and left fielder Johnny Damon?
I like it, Damon is just what the Tigers needed to compete for the division title

I like the addition of Damon, but I don't think he's worth $8 million

I don't like it. Damon is just another old outfielder. Doesn't Detroit have enough of those already?

I hate it! What is this front office thinking this offseason?!

like it

he doesnt need to hit 20+ homers on this team. at the top of the order, just get on base, draw some walks, help out jackson, come thru in the clutch, and i really like the 1 yr deal instead of 2

Damon signing

As a lifelong tiger fan, I like Damon’s offensive ability. But as it turns out he wasn’t quite in love with Detroit as his agent portrayed him. It was quite evident as the thing drug out. That affects my outlook as well. In that respect I’m not sure why Mike & Dave didn’t tell them to take a hike. I’m not sure what kind of season you will get out of someone who doesn’t want to be in your town with a wife who won’t allow you to forget it either. Eight million should make it a non issue and we shall see. For a lot less money many of us would have been happy to embrace one of the young players who want to be here and go 100% in showing it. I think one of them could have done the job. Now it will be interesting to see how Jim handles Carlos, Ryan and the rest as this plays out.

It's a business

I don’t think there will be any issues with Damon “not wanting” to be in Detroit. He’s got 8 million reasons why he wants to be there now, and once he steps onto the field I don’t think it matters. These guys are competitive and they want to win, regardless of the logo on their jersey.

I couldn't care less whether Damon wants to be in Detroit or not

Let’s be frank, we’re all rooting for the Detroit Tigers, not the individual players on the team. Curtis Granderson was my all-time favorite player, but now that he’s not a Tigers, he’s out of mind (I still want him to do well, but I’m a Tigers fan first). I like the Damon signing because he enhances the Tigers chances to make the playoffs in 2010. They have a high payroll this year with or without Damon. As such, it was in their best interests to spend the money to sign Damon, if he can help them win.

Damon can help the Tigers win in 2010, regardless of whether he wants to be in Motown. As such, I’m glad to have him on board.

Had to chime in

Hey guys… huge Tigers fan here and I’ve been reading the site for awhile. This whole Damon saga has made me want to chime in on the whole situation.

It just doesn’t make alot of sense for our club right now. They way overpaid, and way outbid ourselves for an aging corner outfielder. I’m pretty sure we already have enough of those. I’m sorry but I don’t think Damon is as big of a difference maker as everyone thinks. I’m a big Raburn fan and think we could see him put up some very good numbers with a year full of plate appearances, so I don’t like overpaying for Damon when we already have Raburn.

I also think it made us look kinda weak. I think we saw the Twins and ChiSox moves and felt like we had to do something else. And on top of that, already had to put up with Damon acting like a diva. It just one doesn’t seem smart, and two doesn’t seem necessary. Inevitably I’ll root for him to do well and play well, but I don’t think I’ll like him on our team. He’s really gotta put up some monster numbers and earn his money for me to be okay with him.

The only thing that can really make this tolerable is that it was only for one year.

Keep in mind

that until yesterday, the White Sox were also bidding for Damon. If anything, it shows strength because we beat Chicago to him despite his wife’s thoughts on this city.

And I have a big issue with people saying anything about “overpaying” in baseball, not just for Damon. There’s no salary cap, there’s no reason to worry about saving money. The only person allowed to say that he “overpaid” for anything regarding this team is Mike Illitch. Well, I guess you can overpay for a beer at the game, but that’s a different story.

You can certainly overpay

Every player has an amount they think they’re worth, and what they are actually worth. The WAR stat is pretty accurate on how much a player is worth to a team. Plus people always use the argument of how good a player has been… I look at it as how good they WILL be during the current season; more or less will they earn their money. Yeah its not my money, but looking at it from our organizations standpoint, I just dont see how he’d be worth that much.

And I realize the Sox were bidding. In all honesty, I wouldve rather him go to the Sox. We didnt beat Chicago to him at all— we paid more. If they both offered the exact same contract, he would’ve went to Chicago.

by tigers22 on Feb 21, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

He's a left-handed bat

and a better fielder than Guillen who, if you remember back to the fall, was named the starter in LF. Raburn will get plenty of ABs anyway. If it has to do with money, there’s a good chance this signing cuts into Magglio’s ABs. That might prevent him from getting to the 540 PA’s needed for a $15 million option to kick in.

And for the “we paid more” argument? Tell that to the Yankees and see if they give back that World Series trophy.

I'm not saying

that they’re intentionally trying to cut his PA’s, I’m just saying it’s a possibility. I’m hoping they limit him in the early part of the year to keep him fresh for a stretch run if we’re in that position.

he worked out with the

University of Florida football team, all winter and he’s been riding a mountain bike. And up until last season he always hit for power and he’s a smart hitter, meaning he doesn’t necessarily try to swing for the seats. He tries to find the gaps. That’s smart ball playing, imo.

would be huge

I would love to see Maggs come out and prove everyone wrong. I really think he’ll be playing with a chip on his shoulder, and I wouldnt be surprised at all if he returned to form. What a boost that would be for our lineup… would almost be like adding another impact bat

overpaying?

over at mlbtraderumors.com a commenter named Davidwagner said

Fangraphs has Damon valued at anywhere from a low of 9.6 to a high of 16.6 million in the last three years (with defense factored in). Regardless of the deal you think the Tigers could have worked out, 8 million is not exactly a crazy figure.

by by jiminy on Feb 21, 2010 11:34 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

that’s why I don’t think we should say that we “overpaid” for a player. Does it really matter to anyone other than the owner?

I agree with almost everything you said

However, it’s a done deal, so we may as well embrace Damon. A huge Tiger’s fan should think about the good of the club before anything. Put the uniform before the player. So I have tried to look at the upside of this too. Damon is a good gap hitter and he does run when he gets the opportunity. We need guys on base for the middle of the lineup. We didn’t see that too much with out lead off hitter last year. So I am trying to find the positives in all of this, yes he’s aging, but he puts up decent numbers at the CoPa. Plus he adds that left handed bat we desperately need. Granted, Grandy was a great CF, probably one of the best in MLB, but he offense was lacking in a major way.

Also I don’t believe that he’ll be in left field all of the time. I think that the DH role will be assumed Maggs, Carlos and Damon, leaving an opportunity for Raburn to get the playing time he deserves. I think the more time he spends in the OF the less mistakes he’ll make. I like his bat and he has decent plate presence, he’s good for this club and I think the brass knows it. I am big fan of Raburn too.

I agree it made us look weak, because I do believe that Damon would have played for us at a lower number, however, we’re not the ones who make those decisions. So, as long as Damon wears an Old English D I will support him, even though I don’t care for what his wife, or him said about MY city. He can leave her ass in NY as far as I am concerned. 2k10 is going to be a great year for us. I low-balled the amount of games I expect us to win, simply because I will be excited when its’ more than I expect.

MLB traderumors

Detroitchik- You post over there too dont you? Judging by our posts over there, I feel like we pretty much had the same feelings during this whole Damon saga. But I’ll agree, we gotta put the team before the player. You’re right and I feel the same way. That’s what I tried to tell everyone who was crying and complaining about Curt being traded. You’ve gotta be a fan of the entire team and organization, and not just the individual player.

Yes,

I think i requested to follow your comments over there.

Welcome to Detroit, NO sissies allowed

by Detroitchik on Feb 21, 2010 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

also let me add

in regard to the organization before the player, I agree 1000%. I am a HUGE HUGE Ordonez fan, not everyone here is, But I love him, probably the biggest fan he has in this city. I highly doubt they will let him vest again this year. The only way I see that happening is if were in contention and he’s swinging that bat like there’s no tomorrow, because they will need him down the stretch.
I said all of that to say when he goes I will cry like a baby (trust me, the thought of it kills me) It will be like he’s breaking up with me, but I will still love my boys all of them. I grew up on Tiger Baseball, I will not stop going to ball games because he’s not there. I love this team. I live and die with this team. So when he’s gone and they have someone else in right or some one in the #30, I may resent the player somewhat, but I will definitely want who ever it is to succeed, because for me there is no greater team the the Detroit Tigers, we play with more heart than any other club in the whole MLB and we are more dedicated than any other fan base.

There may be an additional reason for the jump to $8 million

Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted:

The Tampa Bay Rays were the mystery team who nearly landed Damon, out bidding everyone but Detroit

We know the White Sox were offering six million dollars, which means the Rays offered something higher than that.

Good line from Jon Paul Morosi
Apparently, someone notified Michelle Damon that there is a sufficiently swanky Saks Fifth Avenue in suburban Detroit.

He was needed...

most think rayburn could put up big numbers with a full season of AB’s, however COULD is the question. Damon is a proven hitter and a left handed stick we needed. We needed him in this lineup to give us a contending lineup. Still have to many holes in the bottom of the lineup in Laird, Everitt, and Jackson, and if Sizemore can produce. Like Damon, Sizemore, Mags, Miguel, Guillen, Inge front 6 and hope Jackson is a stud like many believe.

by jeremy j on Feb 22, 2010 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Damon boost

Damon is a good offensive player and will surely give this lineup a boost. I am sure he will hit left handed pitching a bit better than Curtis did and that will be great. As far as his defense I really don’t know what to expect. Watching him once in a while doesn’t verify all the talk of his defensive short comings but I’m sure there must be something to it. I’m sure his D won’t match or make us forget Curtis. In my mind I have to believe it won’t be any worse than Ryan or Carlos out there and after all he’s been good enough out there to play on two world championship teams. Overall I am pleased and think he makes us better. I’m sure Jim will figure out how they all fit. The one drawback for me is wondering if any of the young outfielders are close to ready. The one that intrigues me most is Wells. I guess it just gives them one more year to be impressive on the farm which may not be bad either. Going forward I see the Twins as our major competition but I believe we have them in the pitching dept and a comparable match now on offense. I’m therefore expecting a good year so look out Yanks.
