Weren’t there rumors in the past of a trade involving Marcus to the Yanks? I feel like they’ve wanted him for quite some time but I don’t have anything to support that feeling and don’t really feel like researching it — I’ll instead defer to the BYB brain-trust.

I know the Mets have been interested in him in the past. But I think they balked at the Tigers’ asking price of Aaron Heilman.

I hope he mashes some weak spring training pitching and makes the roster. It would be nice if he could get an ovation in Detroit.
As long as he goes 0fer everytime up
I’ll gladly give him an ovation.
I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

but it would be better
If everyone else in the lineup went 0-fer whatever. :)

well, not Grandy
Hopefully they would be far enough in the lineup that no one would actually be driven in.

the problem with this is...
Marcus is likely to hit 5 HR’s. I like the guy, but I like winning more. =P

good luck Country Strong
Marcus was a good guy and a good Tiger. Glad to see him get a shot.

Never really had an attachment to Marcus. He caused much more frustration for me than anything else.

But...but...
he’s Country Strong! Seriously, though, I’m with you on that. Seems like a nice enough guy, but I always thought the “Marcus should get 500 AB’s!” contingent was on glue. Guy got exposed if you put him out there too often.
He got exposed in 300 AB.

For sure
he did put on one of the more impressive batting practice displays of power I’ve seen, though. At CBP in Philly a couple of years ago…he was launching 475-foot bombs on the regular.
And won a game with a walkoff
against St Louis in june of 06 season.

Well,
the guy did post a an OPS of .808 in 1,612 career PA for the Tigers. That’s a pretty solid number compared to a lot of guys who have graced the OF/DH spots for the team over the last 4 seasons.

Meh. That’s all in power, and while that has value, his .307 OBP really drags that down.

As compared to these OBPs:
C. Monroe: .303
J. Anderson: .282
J. Jones: .244
J. Larish: .323
B. Clevlen: .282
Thames was certainly a flawed player, but I still think giving a guy who hits a dinger every 15th time up was a pretty good play compared to some of the other options Leyland has chosen at various times.

Well Josh Anderson is a phenomenal defender, so I would take him over Thames. I would also take Larish over Thames because he’s higher OBP/Lower SLG and probably equivalent to Thames defensively.
Thames was one of the better options for Leyland, but that doesn’t mean he’s a ‘good’ option. If that makes sense.

Sorry
the Josh Anderson comment made me laugh on account of the sole memory I have of him with the glove is getting Metrodomed. No, wait, I think that was Don Kelly. In any case, UZR likes him as a LF, hates him as a CF and doesn’t really have enough of a sample for either. I wouldn’t call him phenomenal, though…that’s probably because I hate him worse than cancer.
That’s fine and I understand your concerns. At the very least, he’s better than any of the above options, no?

Of the pu-pu platter above, I'd rank it like this
Larish-Clevlen-Thames-Thomas-Anderson-Jones-Monroe. I like Larish in that he’s still sorta young and hasn’t really gotten a very long look at the MLB level and he theoretically is versatile defensively. Honestly, ranking the rest was like deciding between drinking a Drano daquiri or a strychnine martini. Not very good options there. Clevlen at least has shown some pop from time to time, and has a good OF arm. Thames has elite raw power. Thomas is comparable to Anderson – not as much speed, comparable defensively and has a non-negative slugging pct. Jones and Monroe are non-entities. So…Johnny Damon, anyone?
I'd be surprised . . .
. . . if he makes the Yankees 25-person roster . . .
I hope Marcus nothing but the best. He seemed like a genuinely good person and is the type of ballplayer who always seemed to give it his best and was happy to do anything asked of him including riding the bench. He was another one of my favorites and I was sad to see him go. Good luck Marcus, go send some balls flying out of new yankees stadium
or at least PNC Park in Moosic, PA
but seriously, all the best to Marcus. Never as good as people thought, but always a stand-up guy.

Didn't he come up thru the Yankees minor leagues?
If so, then welcome home
I hope I'm established enough to not be considered a troll for this...
F*ck me.
Another one to the stankees.
Good luck, Country Strong
And may your bat clobber the Indians, Twins, White Sox, and Royals.

Marcus is a great guy (by all accounts) and he never said a cross word in Detroit.
I hope he can get on the Opening Day roster and have an impact (especially against the rest of the AL Central like SRT said)!
