Grapefruit League Gamethread: New York Yankees at Detroit Tigers
New York Yankees
At Detroit Tigers
When: 1:05 p.m.
Where: Joker Marchant Stadium, Lakeland, Fla.
Media: none in Michigan
Tigers pitching: Armando Galarraga gets the starting nod. Also scheduled to take the mound are Phil Dumatrait, Zach Miner, Daniel Schlereth, Josh Rainwater, Jacob Turner, Andy Oliver and Phil Coke.
Yankees pitching: Joba Chamberlain starting. Also pitching are Phil Hughes, Andrew Brackman, Jason Hirsch, D.J. Mitchell, Grant Duff and Wilkins Aria.
Tigers lineup: Jackson CF, Raburn RF, Strieby 1B, Cabrera DH, Guillen LF, Laird C, Larish 3B, Sizemore 2B, Everett SS (One half of today's storyline fell through. Jason Beck reports Johnny Damon is out with a sore left big toe)
Yankees lineup: (BYB hive mind comes through!) Granderson CF, N, Johnson DH, Teixeira 1B, Cano 2B, Thames RF, Gardner LF, Mi Rivera C, Jo Vazquez 3B, R Pena SS
Curtis Granderson and Marcus Thames should get a chance to see their former team when the Tigers and Yankees tangle for the first time this Grapefruit League season.
I don't think any of us are eager to see Grandy in pinstripes. It's going to be a melancholy afternoon.
Note from Big Al: By the way, if any of the hive mind here at BYB run into the Yankees starting lineup/batting order, please feel free to post it in the game thread. I've yet to come across it...

I agree
Especially since I am using a very old computer with no sound as my other one is getting fixed
I just like the thought that while it might be cold and rainy here in Milwaukee
Somewhere in this world, my Tigers are playing baseball.

Are there standings
for who wins COTN the most? I think it’d be fun to have a running tally throughout the season. Winner gets a prize/eternal gloating glory.

Galarraga
From all reports, he pitched very well in the Venezuelan winter league, and was expected to do good things upon his return. Hasn’t been very good so far. I believe that it’s mainly a confidence thing with him. He needs to be aggressive as he was in 2008, attacking hitters. His upside is what we saw in 2008. I don’t think it gets any better than that for him, but that would be a huge, huge boost to the Tiger rotation if he could return to form. But then, the same could be said of Bonderman, or Robertson, or Willis, and I give them all about the same shot of being productive in 2009. No better than 50/ 50 for any of them.
Usually I feel like that
without the “fight” part

Geez. Oh, and good form on the Coke jokes up above. I’m tardy to the party, so I missed out.

so what’s more surprising: his newfound power or dontrelle pitching effectively so far?

Beck's version
top prospect Jacob Turner loads bases on two walks and a hit batter but escapes by striking out Mark Teixeira. Still 6-3 mid 4th.
Laird grand slam
Turner K’s the side after loading up the bases with a pair of walks and an HBP. 6-3 Tigs.

hey
completely unrelated to the tigs, i see on your blog that you have fencing as an interest. http://tigersamateuranalysis.blogspot.com/ (everyone go there, she has some cool stuff) do you work out at a club in Toledo?
I have heard there is a fencing club somewhere in Toledo, but I'm not sure where
I haven’t had the chance to do a lot of fencing since I graduated from college. I’d love to get back into it if I had the money and time (which I don’t have a lot of, thanks to work and school).

college basketball fans will remember him as an excellent post player at NC State. he’s 6’11"
That'd make him the tallest player in MLB history

I think Todd Worrell was also six foot ten

Pitching lines
Galarraga, 2 IP, 2 runs, 3 hits, 2 BB, no K’s
Coke, 1 inning, 1 run, 1 hit (homer), no BB, no K, one error (his fielding E)
Turner, 1 inning, struck out the side, 2 BB’s
Miner, 1 inning, 2 runs, 2 hits, one BB, one double
Schlereth, 1.2 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, one K, no BB’s
Dumatrait, 2.1 innings, 2 runs, 4 hits, one homer, 2 K’s, no BB’s
Geez, Turner is the only one who escaped unscathed
Still, I’m satisfied with Armando’s performance considering I didn’t think it was a good matchup.
And maybe I’m wrong, but has Zach Miner given up exactly two runs in every outing he’s had?
