Grapefruit League Gamethread: Tigers at Phillies
Detroit Tigers
at Philadelphia Phillies
When: 1:05 p.m.
Where: Bright House Networks Field
Media: None in Michigan
Tigers pitching: Justin Verlander starting
Phillies pitching: Joe Blanton starting
Tigers lineup: Austin Jackson cf, Johnny Damon dh, Clete Thomas rf, Miguel Cabrera 1b Jeff, Larish 3b, Gerald Laird c, Wilkin Ramirez lf, Scott Sizemore 2b, Adam Everett ss
Phillies lineup: TBA
Placido Polanco should get the start for the Phillies as he takes on his former team. The Tigers traveled pretty well for this trip away from Lakeland. They brought both Johnny Damon, who was a scratch yesterday, and Scott Sizemore, who is succeeding Polanco at second base in Detroit.

Something doesn't sit right with me
about paying for radio broadcasts.

I'm not saying you shouldn't
I just think the MLB should stream radio broadcasts without charging for them. But my pockets aren’t being lined with the revenue from it, so I’m biased.

the only things that I pay for are sports streams
I torrent everything else so I’m right there with you

Has a link to the Philly’s radio feed as well.

The thought occurs to me
that my family still lives in the Philly area. Perhaps I shall place a call to see if the game is on local TV so I can get biased updates on the proceedings. Yes, I color outside the lines and am not a Phillies fan.
Sweet mother of pearl!
I love Jim Leyland, really I do. But nothing is more frustrating to me than his desire to bat Clete Thomas third. Even in today’s spring lineup, he should be 7th or 8th. Jeez I hope Jim doesn’t do that to us again this season…
A lifelong Tigers fan
Hopefully
that’s not a theme for this season

I don't have sound
But try this link I think you can get live stream radio from here http://www.freebaseballradio.com/Philadelphia.html
Holy Moses!
Go to the ESPN baseball homepage. Jayson Werth’s beard must occupy its own spot on the 25 man roster.
Utley GIDP
And it was only a double play because Victorino was running and Everett was covering the base
Am I counting wrong?
Were there four outs in that inning? Or was rif wrong on something?

Jacob Turner could record 4 outs with a pickoff move.
He’s that good.

I didn't mention that Verlander could do it with his left hand, though
Turner still has to learn that :)
That's the G$ we know

Guys must not be hustling today
I can’t see Joe Blanton ever beating out Johnny Damon to first, and the way they described the Laird ground ball, he should’ve beaten it out

Against the Yankees, I feared that far worse would happen
I’m saying that and I like Galarraga. At any rate, he’s the one pitcher I can’t make a solid assessment of unless I can see him (or specifically, how his pitches are moving).
by SabreRoseTiger on Mar 11, 2010 1:34 PM EST up reply actions
I'm down on AG now
I think we see that 2008 was an abberation and he is not that good. It may be a lack of self confidence, but he isn’t what he was anymore and I don’t see it coming back.
I would be very happy to have him change my mind though
I don't think you can carry an aberration through an entire season
Once you’ve proven that you can be successful, you can do it again unless you’re too old or you’re injured. It’s a matter of figuring out what it was that made you successful (mechanical, psychological). In Galarraga’s case, he strikes me as a very smart person, and because of that, I REALLY want him to be successful. But because he is a very smart person, I think he sometimes has a tendency to overthink when he’s on the mound (I have a tendency to do the same thing in my daily life). Either way, I want him starting, be it in Detroit or in Toledo, not in the bullpen.

There was an interesting note from Dan Dickerson in an FSN report.
Inge, Everett, and Sizemore were studying video frame-by-frame of Polanco turning the double play. I’ll post the link if I can find it.

Gotta admit
I have no clue who some of these Philthies are. Howard? Victorino? Are these guys supposed to be any good?
Yeah, the only Howard I’ve heard of is that rook with the Braves…

Howard set the single season strikeout record, so obviously not.

It’s been broken like 3 times in 5 years (Dunn, Howard, Reynolds)
Just as long
as no Tigers break it this year. I’m looking at you, Brandon Inge.

There are two instances that come to mind
1. ASG introductions at Yankee Stadium (boo? Fuck you!) and
2. At the Phillies victory parade (World Champions. World Fucking Champions).
I’m pretty sure he knew he was on camera both times.
I'm sure someone on Facebook has said that
They’re probably clamoring for a left-handed reliever

The Tigers go 1-2-3
Don’t ask me how, because I was writing a really long reply and that distracted me
Right now Gary Matthews (Sr) is explaining why Verlander should be easier to steal off than he actually is
I really hope

Utley singles, Polanco to second
The Phillies broadcasters keep talking about jury duty, but I’ve missed who they’re talking about
For a baseball player?
Haha, that’s awesome. I’d love to see that in the box score: “DNP – Jury Duty”

At least he can get out of it

Sizemore was on base, Everett popped out, Sizemore made a huge baserunning mistake and got doubled off
and over at third
polanco is laughing to himself because the tigers figured this guy would replace him

Good to see Ni have a good inning
He needed something solid with the strong competition for the LHPs.
A lifelong Tigers fan
Sorry about that
It took 2 hours and 1 min for 29 tigers batters to fail miserably with five double plays, but I belive only 3 or 4 k’s
that appears to be the first offensive fail of the spring
3 singles
4 GIDP
but, as someone mentioned, very few K’s
Just Wondering...
How is Daniel Fields doing? I haven’t heard anything about him this Spring…
And Cale Iorg? (I know he’s not that great, but Danny Worth was playing earlier in ST games)
Are they both in minor league camp (I guess that would make sense, seeing as they don’t really have a chance with the big club. Then again Turner and Crosby pitched, but maybe that’s different…)
