CRAB DRIBBLE

I just like saying and typing crab dribble. I have this image of a red crab with a head band (red, white and blue) dribbling a basketball with its big claw despite knowing where the term originated.

I’m having a bout with insomnia.

Meh.

A visual treat, but that’s about it. I personally think 3D movies should seriously stop, but alas, they won’t… They will just spawn more and more movies driven purely by visual effects and not story line, while still be critically acclaimed (i.e. Avatar). Sigh.

I don't have a favorite genre per se

but I like to watch action movies, love the Bourne series, for example, heist films, some westerns, some wire-fu stuff. And I enjoy a lot of the classics. Put it all together and I love The Thomas Crown Affair.

District 9

For starters. I was a huge Star Trek fan as a kid, and I love Stargate, but it’s so easy to make cliched sci-fi/fantasy nowadays. I really want to see Moon- I’ve heard that’s incredible.

haven't seen District 9

But I want to. Liked the movie Stargate (but avoided the television show). Gattaca … I can’t say I liked it, because it was without question one of the most terrifying movies I’ve seen from the standpoint of being both incredibly depressing and plausible, but it stuck in my mind like few stories I’ve seen. Very disturbing. I’ll never see it again – once was enough.

it's complicated

It was extremely compelling and well done, and I liked it as a movie, but not necessarily as entertainment, if that makes any sense. There are some books I have that are like that – hard to read, but just as hard to put down, and impossible to forget.

I understand what you mean.

I tend to find more movies like that in my collection than books. Requiem for a Dream (I’ve been meaning to get the book) is one movie I own that I have seen only once – it is too much of a punch to the gut/descent into despair to watch again.

does the Star Wars trilogy count?

I have a hard time with sci-fi/fantasy books and movies because they are rarely mediocre – tend to be either very good and well done, saying several interesting things about the human condition, or very bad, predictable, and just a bland rehash of every other previous movie. Hard to find a middle ground.

Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski, talking to ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark about Magglio Ordoñez, he “(Ordoñez) is swinging the bat as well as I’ve ever seen him swing it in the past. He’s driving the ball. O-line protects the quarterback, and the d-line blitzes (I think-I’m not good at this football stuff either). With some decent O-line help for Stafford, the Lions might win a couple more games- him and Johnson make a hell of a duo.

off topic- detroit red wings

here my Question?.How do you pick-up 3pts in hockey?. or usual 1pt or 2pts ,weather a team loses or wins!…anybody know?….p.s GO RED WINGS…down to ~10 games to go in the 2010 campaign, The Red Wing are in 8th place and going to the polayoffs I think?

by '' spiderman '' on Mar 22, 2010 9:43 AM EDT reply actions

I can answer that!

A hockey game can end in either regulation or in extra time (overtime or shootout, same from points view).

If a team loses in regulation, they get 0 points.

If a team is tied after regulation and loses in extra time, they get 1 point.

If a team wins in either regulation or extra time, they get 2 points.

The Red Wings are in the playoffs right now, but the Calgary Flames are right behind them. Thay need to keep winning so no one can pass them – if they can do that, they will be okay.

"While there's life, there's hope." --Cicero

by Baroque on Mar 22, 2010 2:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You can't really get three points in a win.

But, if you’re in 8th place in the conference, and you’re playing the 9th-place team or something, and you win against them, you pick up two points while making sure they don’t get a point (assuming you win in regulation), so it’s sorta like the game counts for more than it’s actually worth, points-wise.

This idea is used more in baseball, anyway, when you’re not looking at points earned, you’re looking at won-lost percentage. That is, if you’re in second and you’re playing the first-place team and you beat them, you (a.) won a game, while making sure (b.) the first-place team lost, so you’re climbing up one game in the standings for that game (instead of just a half-game if only either (a.) or (b.) happened, or possibly just staying the same number of games back if both you and the first-place team wins).

In conclusion, hockey games should still have ties. The shootout is stupid, and clutters up the standings… eventually someone’s going to ask, “Hey, what’s the Wings’ record?” and you’ll answer, “Oh, they’re 17-13-6-2-3-7-1,” if the NHL keeps going the way they are. Also, in conclusion, Hamilton deserves an NHL team. There, I’m done.

by DetroitTigersGeek on Mar 23, 2010 5:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I wonder if expectations play a role in how people perceived Avatar

When I went to see it, I was afraid that I wouldn’t like it, but I ended up thinking it was pretty good. Nothing earth-shattering or life-changing, but I found it entertaining, especially on the visual front. And that’s all I wanted from it going in, so therefore I was satisfied with my viewing experience. If I went in expecting some sort of Star Wars-esque phenomenon, I probably would’ve been disappointed.

by SabreRoseTiger on Mar 23, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

No.

Had moderate expectations, but not enough to still find the film overrated after I finished it.
I will admit it was entertaining and a visual joyride, but NOT Award show winning stuff (except in visual and cinematography catagories).
I dunno though, most people I talk to love the movie… We are entitled to our own opinions I guess…

You know

I’ve heard that the graphics are good. Really though, I don’t go to the movies to see good visuals. Pardon me while I get on the soapbox here, but the marginal difference between a movie like 2012 and Avatar visually is not enough to make me ignore gaping plotholes nor is it enough to make me sit in a theater for 3 hours watching a slight deviation of The Day After Tomorrow or Pochohantas, respectively.

Look, there’s this same problem with video games now. Everything looks beautiful- nextgen graphics on the 360/PS3 look incredible. So do most movie special effects. At some point you can’t just look nice- you have to do other things to stand out. LIKE HAVE A GOOD STORY. Movies can no longer succeed at being one dimensional.

Billion dollars be damned, Avatar is sending the movie industry down a slippery, slippery slope. It wasn’t even the best f*cking sci-fi fantasy movie last year (that title belongs to District 9, which HAD A GOOD STORY). It deserved none of the critical praise, less than half the cash and none of the buzz. May James Cameron get hit with the Titanic.

that validates my feelings about movies in general

I usually find them pretty predictable and not entertaining enough to waste the money on when I can easily find a good book with a far more interesting and complex story. But I still consider Casablanca and Philadelphia Story two movies worth spending time on, so maybe I’m not with the times.

I guess I'm kind of the opposite

I tend to go to the theater to only see visual effects-driven movies, because it’s so freakin’ expensive nowadays. If there’s a non-visual effects, story-driven movie I want to see, I wait for it to come out on DVD, because with those movies, my viewing experience is the same regardless of whether it’s on a big screen or a TV screen. Therefore, I save my movie theater money for movies that will look more impressive on a big screen. Of course, usually they have to at least have a bare bones plot to follow (for instance, I never saw Transformers). Avatar was kind of an exception. I wasn’t really looking for a plot (as a matter of fact, I cheated and read the Wikipedia article on it before I went to see it). I was just curious about the visuals. I’m not really the sort of person to be disappointed when I don’t find stuff I wasn’t looking for in the first place. That said, it still doesn’t hold a candle to Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or stuff like that.

by SabreRoseTiger on Mar 24, 2010 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions

+1

I agree completely on the “why I go to movie theaters” idea, and I think a lot of people feel this way too. It’s why we have IMAX. And going to the movies isn’t a bad date idea either, provided you can find a cheaper theater.

I watch nerdy, dialogue-driven movies.

Clerks, The Big Kahuna, 12 Angry Men (the original), Swingers, and Glengarry Glen Ross are amongst my favourite movies of all time, and their special-effects budgets combined would barely buy a cup of coffee.

Finding a good theater helps

Course, I love old theaters, especially on midnight release.

Went with some of my friends 30 miles for the midnight release of Zombieland- the theater was so old it didn’t have stadium seating, but the lights were retro neon and the crowd was worth it (they started booing and catcalling during the Twilight trailer, for instance).

Man, I can’t wait for the summer movie season…

It was apparently incredibly somber and disturbing. He dressed up in his Cokie the Clown act playing some nofx songs acoustic and telling UNREAL stories of his life from showing up at his dad’s funeral for a few minutes before leaving and doing drugs, to having to sedate his mom when she had a terminal disease because she asked him to and more.

More here.

I don’t know how much of it is true (he’s a maniac and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out he stretched the truth beyond limits), but even if he is lying it’s probably based in some sorts of fact. Just really somber, yet I really, really want to see it.

Someone at the Detroit Athletic Company had a brain fart

I’m in the middle of (finally) ordering my Justin Verlander jersey. I was browsing the jersey section of the Detroit Athletic Co. website looking for the Verlander one, when I came across this:

And in case you’re curious, they DID spell Ryan Raburn’s name right on his jersey.

by SabreRoseTiger on Mar 24, 2010 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

OMG

that came from the Detroit Athletic Company. Bwahahaha. They are usually very professional. I recommend them to everyone. I recently bought a jersey, but not from there thwsy had this deal at Fanatic U buy one get one half off, so me and my friend split the cost of 2.They didn’t have my size with my player’s name and number on it, so they had to make it.
Anyway, I went to pick it up and it was off center. I was pissed. He was like I’ll give you a discount, he was gonna refund 20 or 50 or something I can’t even remember. but I said no I want it centered (lame of him to ask). that was like 3 weeks ago. and he told me he would have it ready in like four or five days. So I called to make sure it was ready before I drove all the way out to Garden City and no it wasn’t. I was sooooo pissed.
I finally got my jersey on Sunday, three weeks later. seems the girl who sews them went on vacation. I said wtf??? you have ONE person to sew jerseys for 3 locations. Most horrible customer service experience I’ve ever had. I will NEVER send anyone to that place.

Whenever we do case studies in class, the patients are always identified by their initials and not their name. We did one yesterday that had a patient with the initials “OP,” but whenever my professor said the initials out loud it sounded like he was saying “Opie” (a fact which was not lost on him). I kept imagining Adam Everett lying in a hospital bed with metabolic acidosis and on a ventilator (and to make things even weirder, “OP” was the same age as Everett).

it shut off randomly on me last night.

which had me really puzzled. When I’d go to turn it back on it would enter the BIOS but than would shut off randomly again. So basically I just started resetting things. Starting with the CMOS. That did something it allowed me to at least get past the BIOS screen before it’d shut off. To test if it was my hard drive I inserted a linux live cd and attempted to install it over my whole hard drive. no go. It shut off before I reached the installation phase.

That apparently did something else because I was able to reboot and get further into the Windows startup and run start up repair which let me attempt a system restore. That didn’t work either. After that though, I managed to boot into safe mode. After about two minutes my computer shut off again.

Just out of desperation I decided to try and install Windows. Which amazingly worked. Since than I’ve had it shut off on me twice. Once while in Windows and once while half way through the BIOS boot up.

I’ve ran memory diagnostics with Windows and with my BIOS. Neither reports any issues. I do know that my hard drive is going bad but that doesn’t explain any problems that I have had. On top of this, reinstalling the operating system over my whole hard drive should have taken care of any virus’ on my computer. This just leaves hardware issues, which on a laptop, usually aren’t easy to take care of outside of hard drive replacements and RAM.

by madpoopz on Mar 27, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like an overheating issue

I had a similar problem with an extra computer I have lying around here. I re-seated the CPU heatsink and fan (so I thought), booted it up, and within a few minutes, bingo, shut down. Fired it up again, shut down mysteriously again. As it was shutting down one of those times, I caught a glimpse of an error message on the screen talking about how the temperature was too high; turns out the heatsink wasn’t properly seated on top of the CPU. Opened it up, put it on properly, and no problems since.

With a laptop, you might want to (carefully) remove the cover and blow out any dust inside with some compressed air.

by frisbeepilot on Mar 28, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure it's not the heat sink...

essentially all that stuff is brand new from last time my computer died. HP fixed that for free because I was still under warranty.

I’ve pretty much run every diagnostic I can think of. The only thing remaining like you said is an over heating issue.

So now I have to get the cover off my lap top which is easier said than done and do some dusting.

CJ and scott feldman are the only pitchers on that staff worth a damn

feldy had a great year last year, very underrated.

harden is good obviously but he’s made of glass.

first pick in a draft

who would you go with? Albert Pujols may be the best hitter, but there are also loads of great first basemen.

I would rather have

other player, although he’s the best hitter out there, (we’re talking fantasy right?) If it were a straight up draft i would definitely try and get him, but if it were auction style like I learned about today when you only have that certain amount of money to spend, you may get shafted and end up with player who have a really low BA or OPS so to have Pujols wouldn’t do you much good when you combine the team average for points, would it? Maybe I am wrong. In the draft, I ended up with Billy Butler as my first baseman. He’s no Pujols but he gets on base and hits for power too.

I went with Hanley Ramirez

because of the lack of other good SS, and still ended up with Adrian Gonzalez for 1B

by CMonroe on Mar 28, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanley wnet for a million dollars in our draft

I went with asdrubel, the other (good) Cabrera. All in all i am happy with the team i got, there are a couple of players I really wanted but i was outbid.

The league I am in isn't auction

but I would like to try an auction league sometime

by CMonroe on Mar 28, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I am doing another on Wednesday

that’s a straight up draft. I already have a list going of the SP and position players I would like to get. Well, actually I hi-lited the players i want, and several of them in each position so just in case one of the players I want gets drafted before my turn I have a back up plan. The auction style was a new experience, but I enjoyed it. It was pretty fun

This was my third draft

but one of them was an auto draft. I had the first pick on that one too.

reminds me of when we did an experiment with E. Coli in my AP Bio class...

Our teacher didn’t tell us it was E. Coli right away. So we were messing with the petri dishes holding them by our faces and such. We than made the little buggers glow under UV light and made them resistant to an anti-biotic.

Good times. Good times.

BTW

that advice is based on experience. Get a hose and lots of dish soap. Then a mop.

by handsomerob1 on Mar 29, 2010 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Solved the problem

I used the mini-hose attached to the sink and a lot of Ajax dish soap.

He may not be able to play CF, but he can clean my dishes! (bad joke over)

No one will regret going. Just for anyone wondering if they should make a commitment to go to Detroit and meet a bunch of strange people who follow the same team, DO IT.

Two thinks that are essential – name tags (such a help) and throat lozenges, as I haven’t had any voice for the last three days but still keep talking. :)

Did you guys

drink Detroit dry or something? Twitter seemed like the morgue on Saturday.

by handsomerob1 on Mar 29, 2010 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Saturday was recovery day

On Friday after the hockey game I actually closed down a bar for the first time in my life – without drinking! – and then we found a great restaurant in Greektown that was still open and had the best waiter ever, then got back to the hotel room at about 4:30 am, and then I took a couple guys to the Henry Ford Museum where I proceeded to spam twitter with pictures while I gloated about the old lady having the energy to go out and do stuff while they were collapsed on couches at the Doubletree. :)

I'm glad people got a kick out of them

Although the idea of a 1987 teenager’s bedroom being a MUSEUM EXHIBIT still freaks me out, as I was 17 that year. But I never had a Depeche Mode poster on the wall. I got a lot of responses from people who hadn’t been in years, and one comment asking if I was narrating a tour for grade school kids or something. Actually, I was just practicing taking pictures with my Blackberry – and I figured out how to zoom in and out, which I didn’t know how to do before.

And the not drinking helped – I was tired, but there was no hangover to deal with.

seriously

They had to force us to leave because it was closing time. I have never done that before EVER in my life. Not even in college – when I was up past 2:00 am in college (which was pretty common), it had nothing to do with a bar and everything to do with a paper due or a test to take the next day.

I'll put together my ramblings on WIM later

But it will take some time to process it all into something that makes sense.

And I’ll have to write some letters. There were a lot of people who were very nice – I can heartily recommend the Doubletree on Lafayette to anyone staying there, they were fantastic people, and the Laikon Cafe in Greektown (I think I spelled that right) had the best waiter ever working the late shift on Friday night. And their meatballs rocked.

next year

We’d be stupid to try to top this, but the best part is meeting people and getting together. A party and a game with friends we can do next year too.

Seriously, it was like a bunch of actual friends more than “people I talk to on the internet.” Everyone was wonderful, and there was a lot of conversation not just about hockey, but also about families, jobs, other hobbies, a little about baseball from some people, roller derby (a couple of the people attending ref), and everything you could imagine, just like any other group of friends. The fact that we were meeting each other for the first time ever in real life was irrelevant.

Also, if Kurt does any April fools crap that deals with us trading Verlander, Porcello, Crosby, Turner or Cabrera, I’m going to kick some ass.
