Exhibition Gamethread: Detroit Tigers vs. Florida Southern College

Exhibition opener:

Detroit Tigers vs. Florida Southern College Moccasins

Time:  1:05 p.m.

Media: None

Tigers' tentative pitching order:

Phil Coke, Eddie Bonine, Enrique Gonzalez, Cody Satterwhite, Fu-Te Ni and Joel Zumaya.

Tigers' tentative batting order:

1. Austin Jackson (CF)
2. Johnny Damon (LF)
3. Magglio Ordonez (RF)
4. Miguel Cabrera (1B)
5. Carlos Guillen (DH)
6. Don Kelly or Kory Casto (3B)
7. Ramon Santiago (2B) (Sizemore was to start but was taken out of the lineup this morning)
8. Gerald Laird (C)
9. Adam Everett (SS)

Ah, at last! We have actual baseball being played. This is like a pre-exhibition game. Technically, the Grapefruit League doesn't open until Wednesday when the Tigers face the Jays. But who's going to worry about technicalities when there is baseball. Being played.

A quick word about the the Tigers' opponents:  Florida Southern -- located in Lakeland -- is ranked No. 1 in Division 2 and enters the game with a 13- 1 record.

The Tigers' initial batting order looks a lot like what I expect it will look like during the regular season opener, just sub in third baseman Brandon Inge at the No. 6 spot.

Pitcher Phil Coke will be making his Tigers' debut after being brought over in the winter meetings trade in December. Austin Jackson, Johnny Damon and Kory Casto will also be putting on the Tigers uniform in competition for the first time.

Star-divide

Since we don't know yet how we'll be able to track what happens in this game, here's a link to the FSC's LiveStats page, which may or may not be up and running. The scoreboard on mlb.com is here.  -Alli

Al Kaline’s grandson is playing third for Florida Southern.

by StringTheory on Mar 2, 2010 12:56 PM EST reply actions

Wow

His high school numbers are ridiculous!
A little quick research reveals that we drafted him out of high school in the 25th round, but he decided to enroll in FSU instead.

I don't think so

I’m pretty sure he could be redrafted by the Tigers, but they’d have to wait until his Junior-year draft.

by Grand Cards on Mar 2, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

saw him play a bunch in high school

not very good competition and he was TINY (a lot smaller than he is now). Not that size really matters a whole lot , but he made the right move to enroll in school instead.

first game thread!!

so pumped for this season! I think this roster gives us a lot of reasons to be optimistic…I am really looking forward to seeing the upside to Austin Jackson he looks strong from the video I have seen..I think this team has a great line-up, rotation, and a pen that could be strong..now lets win this division and not have it come down to the last weekend this year..

I thought it was Perrysburg?

Maybe that comes from living so close to it. Now I feel dumb.

by SabreRoseTiger on Mar 2, 2010 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Hey I could be wrong

It probably is Perrysbug anyway, because a Pittsburgher would’ve put the H at the end…
