MLBTR reports that Joe Nathan has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery, meaning that he is lost for the season. This is not a surprise, and it has numerous implications for the AL Central, although the Twins lead such a charmed life that someone's liable to step up for them.

Closers DL'd in the AL Central

Nathan isn’t alone.

Kerry Wood might be gone for 2 months with back problems and Bobby Jenks is getting an MRI on his calf.

Hooray?

Seems like kind of a jerk move, or maybe just my schadenfreude… but I smiled a bit when I read this.

That’s it, I’m going to hell.

I smiled too

Today is turning out well. I hope Joe gets better though- I’d love for him to be able to enjoy that 11.25 million dollars of Twink money in his spare time.

Man, that’s a lot of cash…

They've got somebody else

You don’t know him. Right now, one of their Latin America scouts is driving up to a dusty plateau in the Venezuelan highlands, where he’s about to find a 6’10", 205 pound beanpole who throws 107mph with a changeup that makes Johan Santana look like Jeremy Bonderman.

They’re the Twins.

Even though this is good for the Tigers,

I feel bad for JNathan. It’s sad to see that kind of talent get rocked. I honestly hope he comes back full strength. Besides….we i win a game, I want to beat the best—not the backup.

In a long distance relationship with the Tigers--and, yes, we're doing fine.

I don't feel bad for him at all.

I thought Joe Nathan was a scroungy bullpen arm when Minnesota traded for him 7 years ago. He’s been over-achieving far too long for me to feel sorry. We’ve had players who have suffered from MAJOR injuries and EPIC failures also. Willis, Bonderman, Zumaya, Renteria, Robertson, and Game 163. We have our very own All-Suck team last decade. I don’t have any pity for Minnesota. 10 years ago, there was serious talk of the Twins franchise being contracted. Since then, they’ve been riding a wave of incredibly good luck.

Joe Nathan is a great closer. Most teams would be lucky to get a guy of that caliber to close out their games.
And yes, we do have some guys who have been disappointing (to put in nicely)—but how many people out there do you see rooting for Willis to fail?

Bitter because they had “good luck” when we didn’t?

He WAS a great closer.

You do realize that Nathan had his 1st decent year at the age of 28 and he’s now 35 years old. Not many pitchers his age come back from this.

I surely am bitter about that.

We’ve had a run of bad luck with trades.

Now that the Twins just gave Joe Mauer a mega huge contract ($184 Million/ 8 Years) I think their luck just ran out. Joe Mauer probably kills the team by the time his contract is done. He’s isn’t worth half that much money. He’s never even had a 100 RBI’s or 100 runs scored in a single season. He’s hit over 20 HR’s just once. Just wow. They just screwed themselves big time. This has got to be the worst contract ever.

SO HAPPY

Sucks for Nathan — he’s a nice guy I’m sure — but at the end of the day, he’s a Minnesota Twin.

He's also getting 11.75 million dollars to rehab

I’d take that.

i with Joe Nathan a complete recovery...

…a nice, long, completely unhurried recovery.

and the Twins should play it slow, don’t want to rush him back for next year. to be safe, he should probably spend the 2011 season rehabbing, too.
