2010 Projected Roster: Toledo Mud Hens
Each day this week (through Thursday), I will post my 2010 projected rosters for the Detroit Tigers and their full-season minor league affiliates, along with some commentary. Of course, this is all mere speculation on my part; it is mostly an exercise intended to enhance my knowledge (and hopefully the reader's) of the Tigers' prospects and farm system. In doing this, I have been heavily reliant on both baseball-reference and Matt Wallace's Take 75 North (which you should subscribe to, if you don't already), as well as demondeaconsbaseball's previous depth chart posts. (Don't forget to vote in the poll at the end!)
2010 Toledo Mud Hens projected roster:
1B Ryan Strieby
2B Don Kelly
SS Cale Iorg
CF Casper Wells
DH Jeff Larish
IF Will Rhymes
IF/OF Kory Casto
OF Jeff Frazier
SP Eddie Bonine
SP Scot Drucker
SP Brooks Brown
SU Zach Simons
RP Casey Fien
RP Brad Thomas
RP Jay Sborz
Unemployed: Ryan Roberson, Ruddy Lugo, Enrique Gonzalez
Commentary after the jump:
The Lineup: B+
Wow, this lineup looks pretty intimidating by AAA standards, especially compared to some of the fodder they trotted out last year. Strieby, Wells, Boesch, Ramirez, and Larish are all legitimate power threats, and both Dlugach and Kelly have had pretty significant success in Toledo. If the Tigers try to get Strieby some time in left field, so much the better, but I doubt that he'll stick. Diaz should be adequate at the plate but will probably be a step down from Dusty Ryan last year. The only reason Cale Iorg would be promoted is because Audy Ciriaco will be starting at short at AA Erie and Gustavo Nunez will be at A+ Lakeland, and there is no reason to inhibit either of their developments because Iorg continues to disappoint. Another possibility would be that either Iorg or Ciriaco switch positions.
The Bench: C
Probably a typical AAA bench, full of minor league flotsam and organizational soldiers. Nothing to see here.
The Starters: C+
Not a whole lot to be excited about here either. Galarraga, Figaro, and Bonine should probably pick out some good driving tunes and start gassing up their cars, as they will probably be on I-75 before too long, shuttling back and forth between the Tigers and Mud Hens as soon as Bonderman, Robertson, and Willis (inevitably) go down to injury. Drucker spent some time in the AFL, but is probably nothing more than a place-holder. Brown, who was brought over from Arizona for James Skelton, is also just back-of-the-rotation fodder.
The Bullpen: A
Talk about a powerhouse bullpen. This should be one of the best and most exciting pens in the International League. Schlereth, Satterwhite, Simons, and Fien should each be guaranteed a spot, and Thomas will almost certainly join them if he doesn't make the Tigers. The Tigers went through the effort of protecting Sborz this winter, and he excelled in limited innings in Erie last year, so I'm pretty confident he has a spot. Rainwater didn't do too well upon promotion to Toledo last year, but I'd be a little surprised if he was sent back to Erie, unless the Tigers have someone else they really need to fit into the Hens' pen.
Conclusion:
This is a much more exciting Mud Hens team than last year's. The lineup should score plenty of runs, especially if Strieby stays healthy. The bullpen should provide plenty of reason to hang around in the later innings. In fact, I'm almost as excited for the Hens' season as I am for the Tigers', but mostly because I'll get to see the Hens play my local Durham Bulls. (If any North Carolinian BYB readers would like to meet for a Hens-Bulls game, let me know!)
Bonus poll:
I'm having a lot of trouble deciding which rotation Casey Crosby and Andy Oliver will find themselves in this season. Will the Tigers be aggressive and give them the Erie challenge? Will they play it conservative and let them begin in Lakeland with a mid-season call up? Help me decide!

Crosby isn't ready for AA
He’s had a good chunk of experience at A ball, but most of that was post-injury. No need to rush him.

Agree.
Take him SLOOOOOWWWW!
He needs to really start building up more arm strength and at the same time, see how he does with an increased number of pitches per game.
Lakeland should be where Crosby and Oliver end up. However, I really wouldn’t be surprised if they where both in Erie…

I still see Iorg at erie
but I dunno how that roster is shaping up otherwise. and donnie kelly with the tigers. other than that I agree.

I could certainly see either of those happening.
In the end, though, I think the organization believes more in Audy Ciriaco than Iorg (DD doesn’t seem to be trotting out his usual “future All-star” line anymore). As such, they probably won’t want to do a SS timeshare in Erie (or make one of them switch positions), and it’s not worth delaying Ciriaco’s development for the sake of Iorg. In other words, the Tigers seem to be choosing between three bad choices, and moving Iorg to Toledo seems like the least of those evils.
If Don Kelly does make the Tigers, then I would pencil Clete in as Toledo’s fourth outfielder and Will Rhymes as Toledo’s starting second baseman.
Neither do I...
But now that Ciriaco (sp?) is in Erie, there is no need for Iorg to stay. Unless he or Audy move positions, which is unlikely…
Sorry Cale… You seem to have fallen out of the Tigers’ future plans as an “All-Star” shortstop.

3B is interesting
Inge is in contract year, so what we do at Toledo 3B this season should be interesting. Larish can play there and it would be nice to get him 450 AB’s or so and a bunch of reps in the field. The same can be said for Dlugach. I know they played Ciriaco at 3B in Spring Training…maybe they saw enough to put him at 3B in Erie, keep Iorg at SS and have Nunez be the SS of the future. I’m really interested in how the team manages their development of 3B and SS with two holes to fill next year.
I suspect that Inge will be resigned to a cheap, one year deal for 2011.
He’s a popular player who has been worth 1.5-2.0 WAR per season as a third baseman, and 3B free agent cupboard is pretty bare for next season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him sign a $3-4 million one year deal.
As we know, the Tigers have a lot of money coming off the books after this year, with potential holes to fill at SS, 3B, LF, and SP (and RF, if Magglio’s option does not vest). I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Tigers use some of that extra cash to go after one or two big name players of the Carl Crawford, Jose Reyes, or Cliff Lee variety. In order to do so, they will probably either resign Inge to a short, cheap deal or use a stopgap like Brent Dlugach, which I think is unlikely if they intend to contend in 2011.

Don’t get my hopes up on the 2011 free agent class…

See
I see us keeping some of that payroll free for extensions for future players. We can’t bind up payroll like we did in 2007.

An excellent point,
but I would be quite shocked if the Tigs saved ALL of that cash, considering Ilitch’s propensity for spending and desire to win. I’m willing to bet several beers that DD makes at least one major free agent acquisition next offseason (major being defined as $12 million per season for at least two years). Any takers?
And...
Iorg may be disappointing with the bat, but his glove is tremendous! He really made vast improvements from his first year to his second year in the minors from that standpoint.
However, he is just getting man-handled by minor league pitching…

If only he'd concentrate on hitting the way he did on fielding

Considering I live in Erie
I can only hope that we will see one or the other here. This is the best time of the year !!! GO SEAWOLVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A check of the Twinkies' transaction list
shows Brad Thomas was optioned on 3/15/01, 3/20/02, and 3/23/03
That would mean he’s out of options.
Thomas
trade Clete and Inge and Zumaya for a 3rd base prospect play Rayburn and Larish at 3rd and bring up Wells
Toledo roster
Kelly & BThomas should be on Tiger OD lineup and I prefer Diaz as #2 catcher while Avila is full time at Toledo for 8 weeks. Reevaluate JUne 1. I believe Dlugash a better prospect than evaluated above but If Iorg cannot hit minor league pitching his glove is meaningless.
