Does signing Jose Valverde look like a better move now?
Ian's latest column at Mlive makes a case for the unpopular Jose Valverde signing. With recent events taken into consideration, he believes it has turned out quite well for the Tigers. I thought I'd throw Ian's question out the BYB readership. How do you feel about the signing of Valverde now?

Valverde has pitched as many official games in the Tigers uniform today as he did in January. Gotta wait a while longer on that question.

Doesn't change my opinion at all.
Too long of a contract, too much money.

Any shorter and we'd be giving up that #1 draft pick for a one year rental.
Money wise, I’m not complaining either.
He made $8 million last year
Had he accepted arbitration, he probably would of made $8- 10 million this year.
We got him for $7 Million for each of the next 2 seasons. With a 3rd year TEAM option at $9 Million.
That’s fine. It’s just not a philosophy I agree with. Relievers are the one area of the ball club that should be built cheaply and I, personally, don’t agree with spending that kind of coin on a closer. Regardless of circumstances.
I mean, at the end of the day, it didn’t preclude us from attempting to improve the ball club, that’s not entirely my complaint about it; it’s more the principle behind it.

I should add:
That there are worse things a team can do, though. I mean, we could be the Dodgers and have someone like Matt Kemp and not even realize how good he really is.

This is where
we jokingly throw out a prospect’s name and start a huge conversation on him. So… Casey Crosby. Discuss.
Casey Crosby is better than you
And you can trust me. Cause I’m impartial.

If he’s pitching even remotely competently, they’ll pick up that third option.

but I’m still with Mike Rogers on this. Too long of a deal.

However
Valverde does have a really cool website (compliments of Kurt) sometime last week via a friend of his

great piece by Ian
I’ve always liked the Valverde signing — as I’ve said before. I knew the Tigers would make supplemental moves if they felt they had to. It didn’t prevent them from getting Damon (despite majority here believing the money spent on Valverde would prevent Tigers from getting other players) and it filled a painfully obvious hole at the closer’s position. Kurt’s obviously right — he hasn’t done anything in the regular season yet — but as Ian alludes to, all early signs are indicating that the Valverde signing could be the most important signing the Tigers made this off-season.

Great Signing....
….We needed a lights out closer…..We clearly didnt have anyone capable of doing it……Im not sure who could have closed before we signed Jose…..I dont want to hear anyone say Zumaya…..he will never be a closer.

Both Perry and Schlereth
have the stuff to do it, but are a year or two away IMO. I feel like Valverde will basically groom Perry for the job while he’s here.
I agree....
….with what your saying 100%…..This is why we had to sign him to a two year deal.
by BennieBladesFan on Mar 25, 2010 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions
I think
the two year deal had more to do with the fact that we had to give up a first round pick. I’m hopeful that Perry could be ready by next year if necessary. But yes, two years to groom him or Schlereth is nice.

You don’t know if anyone can do it until you give them the chance. There was a time when Valverde was an unproven closer, too.

No chance = no idea what someone can do
That was a key gripe of mine in the signing.

Right on
Good analysis. We were able to have our cake and eat it, too. And I STILL don’t have a problem with the second year, because there is a ton of money coming off our books, and there aren’t that many good free agents in next year’s class anyways. We can still sign who we want to next year.

Next year’s free agent class is generally regarded as excellent. Did you just mean Closers? There are lots of good relief arms available, too.

A lot of these guys
will be extended throughout the year. I believe Cliff Lee already signed an extension with Seattle, or is in negotiations for one. Jeter won’t leave NY, and they’d be nuts to let Rivera walk after all he’s done for them. Guys like Berkman, Guerrero, Dunn, and Konerko (and several others on that list) are getting on in years as well. It’s a good class now, but that list will easily be cut in half by season’s end.
by Rob Rogacki on Mar 25, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
I would agree
The class just lost Mauer, too. The general consensus is it’s one of the better classes of recent vintage, though. That could obviously change, but I don’t want to make too many assumptions. Its starting off as an excellent class.

I just need to point out two things...
money coming off the books doesn’t mean squat without a salary cap.
And the other thing I can’t remember do to grammatical errors in that last sentence that distracted me. Oh well.

Don't mind it
Didn’t mind it at the time either. I must take umbrage with some of my BYB brethren on this. 2 years = too long? 4 years is too long. Two years is fine, considering he’s likely to be above average both seasons. It’s not like he’s 45 years old.
