Clete Thomas optioned to AAA Toledo
According to the front office twitter:
Tigers option Clete Thomas to Triple A Toledo. 25-man roster is set.
So this makes Don Kelly the 25th man. I think we all know how *I* feel about it, how do the rest of you feel? More later, as I'm sure there's info and analysis to come.

Kelly earned it
I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of Cletus, but DK earned the spot, I’m hoping he gets his chance to prove that, especially at 3B if Inge starts slow

I like this decision.....
…..he can play everywhere and thats the most important thing….plus its another left handed bat that doesnt strike out nearly as much

For me
These decisions are not the ones that are going to make or break our season. I think DK was the logical choice with health concerns at 3B and 2B, and his versatility gave him an edge. He definitely earned his spot, and hopefully he can be a contributor off the bench.

Meh
I prefer Cletus. Raburn should have gotten more innings in the infield this spring.

Clete
has options remaining. I think that’s the major reason for this move.

Like anyone's going to claim Don Kelly.

Even if they don't, he can walk
and we don’t need a sixth outfielder, especially one that hit .216 in August and .190 in September. I’d be afraid that Leyland would bat him third again!
That's what a lot of people said
about Casey Fien
by handsomerob1 on Mar 31, 2010 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
If Casey cleared waivers, he'd have been outrighted
but Kelly is past that point. He’s already been a minor league free agent, having paid his dues down there. He can choose to walk, Casey couldn’t.
I think we’re fortunate to have Casey back. He throws strikes and could be a valuable middle reliever.
Love it
Clete looked good in spring, but Donnie looked better. I think he’s better for D (given his infield abilities) and just a better hitter. I love Clete’s OF D, but am generally not a fan of late-inning defensive replacements in general (in the real world, it can be tough to come off the bench cold, just like with pinch-hitting), which would have been Clete’s primary contribution.
A lifelong Tigers fan
This was a tough one
I’m happy for Donnie, since this was really his last shot. Clete will be back at some point, I’m sure. I just hope they planned for a hefty increase in the line item for “Baseballs” in Toledo, because that lineup is going to be hitting more than a few out of the park.
According to Beck's Blog...
Cletus had an MRI on his shoulder to see if he had something other than a “deep bone bruise” He can hit, but he can’t throw… which means he is worthless as a late inning replacement. Even tho I think Kelly would have won the spot regardless, Clete not being able to throw allowed them to punch his ticket to Toledo.
Clete's injured, so it really was a no-brainer.
I like both of them and hope Clete gets better and tears up the International League. Then when Guillen gets injured, we can bring him up in late April.

Decision
With Boesch, and Strieby at Toledo almost ready, Clete could get traded if another clubs CF gets injured. Leyland keeps saying he will be a major leaguer someday, and Austin Jackson should be around for years.
Yeah
Strieby is a 1B so he’s probably a candidate to be traded at some point. I think the Tigers are set at that position. Considering LF and RF will be areas of need in the not too distant future, hanging on to guys like Thomas, Boesch (and Ramirez etc.) probably isn’t a bad idea.
Streiby may be converted to LF
Either that, or he’ll DH in the majors.

I can see him DH next year if he does what he should in AAA
I don’t see why not…He’ll be on the Bill Butler track…

I can buy Strieby as a DH
Seems too big for an OF though.

LF won't be a position of need
When DD blows all that freed up money next offseason on Carl Crawford or Manny Ramirez. Ugh.

How can you blow up money on Carl Crawford?
He’s a stud and would take over for Damon as the #2 hitter.
He’s be PERFECT. I hope we get em.
As for Manny, DD would not get him. No way.
by Cecil_Fielder on Mar 31, 2010 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
There's probably going to be a bidding war
for his services, and Detroit already has OF to spare (obviously none that are near as good as Crawford, but yeah). I’d much rather they go after someone like Adrian Beltre (if he doesn’t take his player option), because they’ve got little to nothing at 3B in the system.
There are going to be a good amount of great starting pitchers on the market too, but I don’t know if Detroit would go down that route.

The Tigers have no outfielders adequate to replace what they're losing
with either Damon or Ordonez. Casper Wells looks like the best of the lot to me, and he’s certainly no Magglio, no 2, 3, or 5 hitter. The best ready position players in the Tiger system are first basemen where we don’t need them, and outfielders that don’t look like top to middle of the order hitters. DD needs to go shopping.
Wells could hit 5th
.260 AVG, but good amount of walks and homers.

I could see that
ultimately, the No. 5 guy will have to give some protection for Cabrera, and that’s an important role. Strieby might do that too, as a DH, or possibly Larish if he converts to 3B. Guillen is under contract through 2011, so that’s two years off. Larish or Sizemore may also bat second with decent OBP’s and a little bit of pop.
I see
CF Jackson
2B Sizemore
1B Cabrera
DH Streiby
RF Wells
C Avila
LF TBD
3B TBD
SS TBD

Is that 2011 or 2012?
- Iorg has a helluva long way to go. Rather see DD swing a deal for a good defensive contact hitter with some speed. TB and Anaheim have some extra IF’ers. Not much on the FA market.
- Ok with Strieby at DH, but that’s the guy protecting Cabrera in the lineup, so it better work. Add Wells, and that’s not a strong middle of the order. We need at least one big bopper, and he’s not in the system, to fill an OF/ DH role. I mean a BIG bopper.
- Al’s kid may be ready to take over behind the plate, but I still like Laird at least as his backup, if not platoon partner.
- Wilkin’s in the same boat as Iorg, only not so far away. His D is mediocre, and he can’t hit breaking balls. He’d be carved up in the show right now.
Wilkin Can Fly Though....
…..Learn to hit that breakign ball and he will be a great player.

Cletus would have been the sixth outfielder
counting Guillen, on a team that carries 13 position players
He’s as good as any outfielder we have, defensively, but he’s been inconsistent at the plate, hitting just .216 in August and .190 in Sept/ October.
He’d take away some of the few AB’s available for Raburn, and we’d have only Santiago as a backup in the infield.
I don’t think this was a tough call.
But that being said, if AJax flames out, Cletus stands to have a shot at being the primary CF’er, probably in a platoon with Raburn. If he hits in Toledo, of course.
