Goldstein rates the Tiger system 14th
That's the most optimistic ranking that I've seen for the Tiger system in quite some time.
Kevin Goldstein writes for Baseball Prospectus:
14. Detroit Tigers
Last Year's Ranking: 27
Why They Are Here: While they are young and risky, for pure upside few teams can provide a one-two punch as promising as Jacob Turner and Casey Crosby, while Scott Sizemore is a solid big league-ready second baseman. The power arms continue from there, and while the system lacks depth, there are still some interesting power bats at the upper levels.
Where They Will Be Next Year: The same at best, but likely down. Turner and Crosby have to live up to expectations, as Sizemore will lose eligibility, and the signing of Jose Valverde cost the team its first-round pick in June. There's just not a ton of upside among the hitting crop "

Goldstein gives the Tigers quite a bit of credit for their strength in the pitching dept. I generally find these ranking systems to be fairly useless. The real question to me is whether a farm system will be able to adequately address the needs of the major league club. In the case of the Tigers, I think they're doing an exceptional job in the pitching department, and a lousy job in the lineup. I expect that trend to continue.

Not shocking since Goldstein basically ignores floor when it comes to prospects. It’s all upside, all the time.

He likes Sizemore
And Sizemore doesn’t exactly have Chase Utley upside.

I'll amend:
It’s all up side, a staggering majority of the time.

Tiger ranking & roster
Given need for LH bats plus status of IFs Inge & Sizemore both Don Kelly & Clete Thomas need to be on opening day roster. I tend to favor Avila at Toledo for experience value while R Diaz is backup C until June. If Laird does not improve with bat, three catchers might be needed. I would keep Brad Thomas with Seay out & Ni not overpowering. If Guillen does not hit early trade pitching for another bat.
