Off-Topic: April 2010
We survived the off-season. April is finally here.
I forgot to line up some sort of Tigers-related April fools joke for the blog. I fail miserably at being an editor/moderator/whatever.
What are you doing in this off-topic thread?? Go watch some baseball!

I just heard it
It’s tolerable now, but I know I’ll be sick of it come April 10th, let alone May 1st.
Right now I’ve got FSD on, waiting for the Tigers preview to come on, and they’ve got some show with Mickey Yorke showing a bunch of the entry videos. You know, next year, those of us at BYB who can sing, play an instrument, write songs, and work with video and editing software should just get together and enter. Surely we can come up with something better.

If your an Elmore Leonard fan
I’d give it a second try. Its one of the better adaptations of his characters
I heard recently it was an Elmore Leonard adaptation
If you ask me, not enough of his stuff gets made into movies or television (although a lot of it has). It just translates so well. I’ve been hoping someone would adapt Swag or Mr. Paradise and shoot in Detroit with all the tax breaks involved.
it might have something to do with FOX
being regular network TV, therefore more conservative and FX being cable therefore more liberal?

I'm watching the Orioles-Yankees game.
Granderson has completely changed his hand position while batting. The bat no longer rests on his shoulder. His hands extend toward the plate and he has a bat waggle. I wonder if it’s something he picked up from teammate Nick Johnson, because that’s who it reminds me of.
When I first got my MLB.tv subscription a few years ago, I went back and looked through the 2006 archives (possibly to atone for the fact that I missed most of it)
Granderson’s batting stance was a lot different in early 2006. He held the bat up higher and his hands were away from his shoulder. It sounds a lot like what you’re describing. I wonder if the Yankees changed it back (It originally changed sometime during the 2006 season, because he was in his familiar stance by the playoffs). I haven’t seen much of Granderson during spring training so I’ll have to take a look.
by SabreRoseTiger on Apr 2, 2010 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
they may have
The batting coach for the Yankees got a head start on Granderson because he was looking at film before the playoffs in case the Tigers were the Yankees’ opponent, and he said it gave him a few weeks head start in evaluation and correcting a few mechanical flaws he found in his batting approach.

gotta question...
for our geeky crowd.
Just got an ipod touch. Pretty much the only web page that will display is Google. Every other page will just eventually tell me that the “server has stopped responding.” My question is this, could this be a router issue? It’s an old router (around 2003 I think?). I have the most recent firmware for it. Really I’m asking if this is even a valid assumption for me to make because not every web sites servers could be sucking at the same time?!?

Heads up
They are showing the 2000 Home Opener (First game at Comerica Park) on FSD right now. Check it out if you feel like flashing back to when Josh Lewin was the Tigers play-by-play man and Carlos Guillen was a Mariner.
Another heads-up
FSD will re-air Justin Verlander’s no-hitter tonight at 7:00, if you wanted to re-live the magic of that night.

It just so happened that I worked that night, and I still have the tape. Still, I’m watching the repeat anyways. You know, of the nine guys in the starting lineup that night, only TWO are still with the Tigers? Inge and Maggs are the only ones left.

Depends.
I think McCarver only comes across as better because he’s with the worst play-by-play guy in Joe Buck. Joe Buck is the absolute WORST. Dude doesn’t even like broadcasting the AL and just crams the “need to know things” in on Friday nights for his Saturday broadcasts.
Jon Miller is awful, too, but he at least sounds excited to be there. Joe Buck sounds like he’s at a funeral. I wish it were the funeral of his baseball broadcasting career. He’s not witty, or insightful or anything. And hearing him be solid broadcasting the NFL and in interviews outside of broadcasting just pisses me off more. Shows how much he mails in the Saturday games. Thank god I don’t watch them when the Tigers aren’t on there. It’s awful.

Scary experience
So I went home (to Lansing) for Easter this past weekend, and my roommate tried to call me at 6:00 am on Saturday morning. I obviously didn’t hear my phone, being asleep, but he called because the house next door to ours (in Ann Arbor) had caught on fire and was burning down at the time he called. Later on, I read that one of the seven people that live there had passed away due to burns and/or smoke inhalation (not sure which, but it was because of the fire), while two more are in critical condition the last I heard. My house is maybe 10 feet away from the house that burned (you can barely fit a small car’s width between the two), yet the only damage we suffered was melted siding. On any other night I would have been sleeping in my room, which faces this house. The local authorities believe that the fire was caused by arson, as it started with a couch on their porch and worked its way to the house.
Despite not being in Ann Arbor at the time, the whole situation has shaken me quite a bit. This year’s Opening Day will be a bit more meaningful to me, knowing what could have happened if the fire had spread to our house and I had been inside. I’m looking forward to an awesome season, whether the Tigers win or lose 100 games, and I’ll (hopefully) be much less critical of our guys.
Let’s Go Tigers.
that's nuts
Back in the day (1994ish), I had a friend who lived in a house that was burned via arson, and the stories he told about waking up to a roomful of smoke and people screaming was pretty scary in itself. I can’t imagine what it’d be like to go through it myself.
Glad your house was spared major damage.

I was pulling for Butler
to drive MSU fans even more nuts.
Aside to MSU fans: they lost because of turnovers and missed free throws, not the referees. There were a few suspect calls, but Butler won the game because they (1) forced turnovers and scored off of those turnovers, and (2) hit their free throws.
Can’t say how Duke won tonight, I didn’t get to watch most of the game.
two things
1) Michigan sucks now, get over it.
2) Every MSU fan I knew was rooting for Butler.

Awesome news
Fernando Rodney pitched a roller coaster 8th inning, one that he needed a double play to get out of without giving up any runs.
If the Sox lose their next game and the Tigers win on Wednesday, the Tigers will already have a 1 game lead on the rest of the division. And no, it’s not too early to think about these things.
In the next game thread
I may have some comments that seem really simple-minded, but that’s because they will be intended for a friend who knows nothing about baseball but would like to learn, and I told her she can lurk here to avoid the limitations of twitter. Not because I think anyone here has forgotten what a walk is or the difference between balls and strikes. :)
I thought about a fanpost-thingy, but to have one of those for things as basic as how many outs in an inning, the difference between balls and strikes, etc. seemed a little silly because it wouldn’t be directed toward more than one particular person.

A lot of talk about Granderson so far, and a little bit about Polanco (and even Rodney)
But in case anyone’s interested, Edwin Jackson is making his first start for the D’Backs tonight. He’s given up 3 runs in four innings so far.

He ended up giving up just the three runs, but he was gone after five innings (pitch count) and the Padres scored three more runs off the D’Backs bullpen and end result was that the D’Backs lost 6-3, with EJ taking the loss.
In other news, the Twins won last night and hit a bunch of home runs. Crap.
