Do you root for traded Tigers to fail?
I do.
I never thought I would root for Granderson to not do well, but after seeing him in Yankee pinstripes, I gotta admit I enjoy seeing him waving at pitches against lefties.
Nate Robertson never did anything to me, but I was glad to see the Padres knock him around today. I want Jurgens to turn ordinary, and Cameron Maybin not to acheive stardom.
For some reason, I don't feel that way about Polanco, though.

Never
I rooted for them. They didn’t ask to be traded. I want good things for them. Just not against us.

Not me
Unless there is some extraordinary reason to not like them, I don’t generally root against players. I view Baseball as a team sport. As long as a player wears the ol D, I love em like my first born child. On another team, once in a while, I might continue to root for a player after he’s traded, but rarely against him. Polanco is definitely one that I’d like to see doing well. Maybe it’s easier to feel that way when he’s in the other league, and his team winning couldn’t hurt the Tigers unless we’re playing them.
A similar question is: do you root for division opponents in the playoffs? I don’t. More likely, I root against them, but it’s still very much an individual thing. I have been resentful of the Twinkies when I feel they’ve lucked their way into the playoffs, but it’d take an act of terrorism to get me to root for the Yankers over anyone!
I usually root for NL teams in the playoffs
Something about rooting for another AL team doesn’t seem right to me. To each his/her own, I guess though.
Depends which AL Central team.
If the Tigers can’t make it, then I would root for the Twins (sorry!). If the Royals ever make it, I will root for them. But I will NEVER root for the White Sox or Indians. I usually have a couple of favorites in each division for whom I will root if and when they make the playoffs:
AL East: Orioles and Rays
AL Central: Tigers (obviously) and Twins
AL West: A’s and Rangers
NL East: Phillies
NL Central: Pirates and Reds
NL West: Giants
Free agents who leave on bad terms are one thing
if I liked them as Tigers, I usually like to see them do well elsewhere.
The only players I don't want to do well...
… play for the Twins and the Indians. Also AJ Pierzynski. Screw that guy.

Oddly enough, the Twins are probably my second favorite baseball team...
for some inexplicable reason. I save all of my hatred for the White Sox, Yankees, Red Sox, Indians, and Angels (in that order).
I hate the Indians more
But only slightly so.

Only two seasons in 110 years
have the Tigers and Injuns finished 1- 2.
Maybe 2007 was the third time? Anyway, we were 8 games out.
Depends on the guy
But as far as Placido, Curtis, EJax and Pudge — never.
"I see great things in baseball. It's our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us." Walt Whitman
Never!
In fact, I almost never root against anybody individually. I want teams to win or lose, but unless a guy has really done something offensive, I wouldn’t root against a person. And as far as traded Tigers, I generally actively root for them. My ideal result for this season would be—well obviously, Tigs World Series Champs—but then for Curtis Granderson to have a career year on a Yankee team that does not make the playoffs.
I hope you at least make an exception for AJ Pierzynski.

I just don't root.
Curtis Granderson is not on my television every night for 6 months a year, no reason for me to root for or against him at all. I root for the Tigers, a few select non-Tigers players (Pujols, Lincecum, ManRam, etc) and that’s it. Even when I’m rooting for the Tigers, I find I’m rooting for the team and not the actual players. I don’t develop much of an intense bond towards any of them really.

no
I want them all to do well. Maybe not to play that great when they play against us, but I never want any of them to fail.
Welcome to Detroit, NO sissies allowed
I am captain neutral for 99% of them
but when Jason Grille came back to town, or I even watched him pitch elsewhere, I was giddy to see him get knocked around, because it wasn’t our bullpen…. Everyone else, I wish them well, unless it costs us a game in some odd way.

In particular, I hate the idea of rooting against Grandy,
but since I am a card-carrying Yankee hater (and also an Orioles fan), I can’t root for him at all now. I feel awful about it since it’s not his fault he’s there, but there you go.
I'm torn as well
It’s a tough situation for us. I want to see him do well, but his success = Yankees success, and that’s not cool.
I have met Grandy a few times
and I will never root against him, he’s truly too good of a man. However, I hope we put in lefties against him 100% of the time, that way I can root for our LOOGY instead of “against Curtis”… I wish him well in NYC, but I have a bad feeling his charitable goodness will only go so far in that city… Too much hate, let alone the people

I think that seems wrong on a number of levels
And Zach Grienke agrees with me. Personal success does not necessarily lead to team success in baseball.
Owls are super cool
You don’t happen to visit the Owl Bar in Baltimore, do you? If not, you should check it out next time you’re in town for an O’s game.
Actually, I don't live in Baltimore.
I live in Upstate New York. But I was lucky enough to be treated to a game at Camden Yards for my birthday in 2008! If I get back to Baltimore at some point in the near future, I’ll check that bar out. Thanks!
Yeah, owls are great; they’re my favorite bird!
I have that card too
but I made another little card that I stapled to the back which allows me to root for Grandy as long as this is subsumed to my overall desire for Yankee failure
Hmm, I may have to ask you for a copy of that card.
Anything to let me root for him again with a clear conscience. ;-)
Granderson is a unique case
On one hand, I will always love him not only as a ballplayer but as a person, but I must admit that when he was doing really well at the start of the season I was filled with an almost vengeful pride. It was like I was hating him for not playing that well with the Tigers, otherwise he would still be here and everything would be right again.
Those Twins
Total love/hate relationship with me. In a way, I hate playing them because it seems like they’e always found a way to “fundemental” or “small ball” us to death, but I also respect the team that they are and wish we could be them (with a little more sexy…aka HR’s for batters and K’s for P’s.)
As for players, I always root for the ex-players. But if they are doing poorly, I feel a lot better about the trades that shipped them out. It’s easier to feel good about the big Marlins deal when we see Andrew Miller toiling away in the minors and Maybin whiffing all the time. I guess it’s my way of creating a win-win situation. If they’re doing well, good for my old homies…if they stink, it’s a good thing we ditched ’em.
Pretty much what I meant when I started the thead
The John Smoltz trade haunted me for 2 decades. He is destined for the Hall of Fame and we gave him away for 7 wins with Doyle Alexander. Now Smolz seems like a great guy, a big Spartan basketball fan too, but I could not get myself to root for his success because it should be as a Tiger.
But that’s just me. I want bad things to happen to girls that dumped me too.
9 wins for Alexander
that directly led to a division title
and 14 more the next season
Smoltz never would have amounted to anything in the Tiger organization, and I can say that with every bit as much confidence as anyone can say otherwise. We didn’t have Cox and Leo Mazzone, or the cast of stars in the rotation that the Bravos had. I don’t root for or against him, but I’d do that trade again all day long.
Agreed
the Tigers essentially gave up a prospect for a guy that won them the division. You can’t ask for anything else. It’s not even like Smoltz was a “can’t miss” guy either. Cox and Mazzone had just as much to do with his development has Smoltz’s God-given abilities did.
by Rob Rogacki on Apr 30, 2010 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions
You and I see eye to eye on this.
I would do the Smoltz trade every time. The Tigers were not exactly in the greatest positions with who they had coming up, aging and the window of opportunity was closing. I’ll take the division and playoffs over a prospect, especially one who is not “can’t miss”.
Dontrelle Willis apologist.
Disagree kind of
If you’re in a position to contend for longer than a couple years, don’t give up the blue chip prospect. If not, go ahead. It’s all about timing- I’d rather miss the playoffs in 2009 by not acquiring Roy Halladay for instance, and have Rick Porcello, Ryan Perry and Casey Crosby around for 6 years after.

Additionally, the Tigers farm system was thin at that time.
And the game is about winning, not about having a good player and zero championships. If moving Porcello or Crosby meant winning a World Series, I’d take it because that is the aim of the game.
Dontrelle Willis apologist.
You can't guarantee a World Series
You can guarantee a playoff run- which is why surrendering multiple blue chip prospects at the deadline is a bad idea- often you can use those players to create a dynasty.
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
Assist. Editor, Minor League Division, Bless You Boys
I agree on that point
but the fact that Smoltz wasn’t viewed as a top-flight guy is why this trade was great for the Tigers at the time. They thought they were giving up some random minor leaguer (a la Jay Voss, for example) for a guy like Doyle Alexander.
It depends to some degree on how they leave
If it’s a trade, I’d like to see the guys we got in return outperform the former Tiger(s). So that might involve a small amount of rooting against someone but it’s not personal. I’m not rooting against Granderson per se, but I’m rooting for D.D. and the Tigers to come out unequivocally on top in that deal.
Also, I can’t say I wished Juan Gone well when he left town.
And I can say
that I wished him to be hit by a car electrified by lightning pulling a steamroller behind it weighed down with bricks and lead.

Juan Gone, that is
not Grandy. Grandy is class and I will root for him to personally do well in any situation. Hopefully, the outcome against the Tigers will never come down to an AB by Grandy, though.

HIggy
I actively root for Higginson to lose all of the money that he took from the Tigers in a real estate scam.
I have no ill will towards Higgy.
He was one of the only bright spots on a lot of weak Tigers teams. I don’t blame him for the contract. I blame He Who Must Not Be Named.

I'd rather hear about Voldemort...
…than Randy Smith. Voldemort never did anything wrong to the Tigers. Randy Smith was the downfall of the organization.
Rooting against former players in other sports
I really, really do enjoy rooting against Marian Hossa. I can’t stand the Blackhawks.
I don’t really dislike former Tigers who have left, but Marian Hossa really angers me.
well he was kind of a rental anyway
I think there’s got to be a little time for a player to be associated with the team before the “root for them to do good” kicks in.
by Kurt Mensching on Apr 30, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Meh
Hossa was a one year rental. If anything, I’m not a fan because he sucked something awful during the playoffs last year.

i hope miggy does a lot better than maybin
i hope austin jackson is also a lot better than maybin too. i guess i root for our guys to be really good, and better than the guys we traded away (or didn’t sign)
agree on hating hossa
Depends entirely on the circumstances.
I don’t usually root for them, but I have no real anger towards them either. They (usually) didn’t ask for the trade.
Did he whine and bitch on the way out?
Watching Grilli hit the suckwall was amazing. Same with Monroe.
Grilli was amazing
He terrified me when he played for the Tigers, and it’s nice to see that the same terror affected fans of other teams!
What about free agents that leave by their own choice?
Jack Morris used to be my favorite, but seeing him in a full length fur coat (albeit in MN one step removed from his tigers days) made it easy to turn on him. Same thing with Steve Kemp who went to the Yanks after a stopover with the CWS.
I can root against Carlos Pena for not “getting it” until he went from the tigs to redsox to yanks to rays.
I can root against Jeff Weaver for losing it after he left the tigs.
Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger
I was horrified when Cecil Fielder was traded to the Yankees, he just didn’t look right in that uniform, same for Jack Morris, Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish, Willie Horton, Steve Kemp, Ron Leflore, Jason Thompson, etc. They were my guys, they played for my team. Once they leave the Tigers I always root for them to do well…unless, of course. they’re playing the Tigers…that’s where my loyalty will always be…to my team, my guys, the Detroit Tigers.
