MLM Recap: Wilkin Ramirez triples as Erie beats Akron
Okay, so I'm going to start linking things in these recaps... when I find news articles and posts worth recommending. I'll start by recommending this post from Stephen Hamel, who runs Connecticuit Tiger Den. It's a quick look at Edwin Gomez, a 2009 4th rounder. He's been doing this with a bunch of players in EST, so go check it out for some of the youngest guys.
Onto the recaps!
Phil Dumatrait was pretty solid in this one- 5.2 innings with 2 runs allowed on 4 hits (including a homer) and a walk with 3 strikeouts. The bullpen was shutdown- Robbie Weinhardt went1.1 innings with 2 hits and a strikeout, Dan Schlereth went an inning with 2 strikeouts (always nice to see a walkless outing from him) and Jay Sborz finished it off with a hitless inning and one strikeout. Brent Dlugach was 1-3 with a homer and a walk and Ben Guez was 4-4 with 2 doubles.
Jon Kibler was okay- 7.1 innings with 1 run allowed on 4 hits and 3 walks, but you'd like to see more than 2 strikeouts. Luis Marte pitched an inning, and allowed one hit and got a strikeout. Wilkin Ramirez went 2-4 with a double and a triple- hopefully he's putting those tools to good use. Andy Dirks was 1-4 with a homer, and Cale Iorg walked (but also went 0-2 and struck out again).
Charlie Furbush caught a hard luck loss in this one- he allowed 2 runs on 4 hits (including a homer which scored both runs) and a walk with 13 (!!!) strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Matt Hoffman had a hitless inning with one strikeout. Alden Carrithers was 2-2 with 2 walks and a double- the only extra base hit of the game for the Flying Tigers
Jacob Turner started today- not a fantastic outing though, as the youngster went 4 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. Kenny Faulk went 2 innings, striking out 4, giving up 2 hits and walking 1. Jamie Johnson was 2-4 with a triple and a walk- this kid is shaping up well. Wade Gaynor was 2-4 with a homer and a walk, and Eric Roof was 3-4.

What's the deal?
I mean, why are Guez and Scram up in AAA while Wilkin is still in Erie? I mean, sure he’s still striking out a lot, but he always going to strike out a lot, and 1-6 on SBs but he’s clearly playing below his level and I don’t think he’s going to help himself learn much down there.
It was one thing when we had OF logjam up at Toledo but now we’re playing 2 lesser guys, IMO, or certainly one lesser guy and one guy who’s prob overmatched at AAA (Guez) over him. Can anyone explain the thought process?
there's a lot more to baseball than we think about as fans
I’m sure the Tigers aren’t just acting willy-nilly here. But exactly what the reason is, I don’t have a clue.
Possible theory: Maybe there’s a coach in Erie they want Wilkin to get extra work with.
But I really can’t say.
Are you on twitter? You could ask @Nick_Underhill or @TigsTown if they know

True
I mean, that’s the type of reasoning I was looking for actually. Either a specific coach or possibly a specific position (CF) that’s blocked that’s causing him to stay in AA. I just haven’t heard anything and it doesn’t make sense much to demote even players that do somewhat poorly in the minors for any great length of time.
I’m not on Twitter but I’m sure one of those guys will prob cover this at some point and I’ll be on the lookout for it.
Not just outfield, they want Wilkin to learn the CF position and play there every day.
The Tigers are almost certainly taking in a wide swath of outfielders in search of the one or two that might fill a hole on the Tiger roster in 2011 or 2012. The short list is Boesch, Wells, Thomas, and Ramirez, but they’re looking at Scrammer and beyond as well.
I prefer they just sign Carl Crawford, but hey….
They're temporary guys I think
Merely injury replacements so there’s no reason for them to worry about their developments. Whereas leaving Wilkin in one spot might help his development. It is a pretty good question.

Also
Second year in high A, dominating. Furbush is ready for a promotion.
Indeed he is
I’d say he gets promoted in late May.

I think too much is being made of Wilkin in Double-A.
There are teams that are notorious for skipping players over Triple-A to the bigs (Marlins come to mind) and him being in Double-A so he could play everyday doesn’t really bother me. I think it’s got less to do with him and more to with getting him AB’s everyday possible.

eh
While I agree with most of what you said, or at least that those are rational reasons to leave him in AA, I don’t think think this is a skip-AAA type situation.
First, I think that players that skip AAA are almost always:
a) Pitchers; and
b) High-ceiling players shooting through the system.
I think you will have a very hard time finding any player in recent organization that played an entire season at AAA, then was demoted, and then shot back to the majors again. This seems like a prove-at-every-level situation to me.
