The front office broke the news: Ryan Raburn was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, and pitcher Alfredo Figaro got the promotion.

Do we know for sure that Figaro is starting?
I’ve asked Jason Beck, but he hasn’t replied to me (yet).

Same here
Brad Thomas and Eddie Bonine (the two long relievers) are probably still unavailable, so they need somebody, just in case.

No one said he was starting today
starting today would be short rest for him. He might start one of the game in the Red Sox series, especially since Porcello would be on short rest his next time through the rotation with no off day. My guess is Figaro is a long reliever for today/tomorrow, then gets Porcello’s next start.

I dont think Figaro will be starting...
…but if he does why do you think he will be replaced by a reliever?
by BennieBladesFan on May 12, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I don't think
they would send down Raburn for a day. It seems like they want to get him some ABs down there to get his bat going. The bullpen has been overworked so far, and another arm wouldn’t hurt.

Kinda surpising becasue hes the right handed bat off the bench...
…however he hasnt been hitting and we al know he is awful in the field…Combination of not hitting and not fielding spells doom for any player…Lets be real though he was on the team to hit and he wasnt doing that so I say see ya later.

Way too kneejerk
54 sporadic PAs, especially after the season he had last year, is no reason to dismiss Raburn as having no impact on this year’s team.
Hate to use the term
but maybe Raburn was a “one year wonder” last year. I’m not writing him off, but that production was unlike anything we’ve ever seen from him.

Nothing special about his bat
but something particularly unspecial about his glove.
i came into the season thinking raburn was one of our better players. he’s not right now. give him some time in the minors to see if he can figure something out. he’ll be back.

Can't disagree
I’ve been a big Raburn fan for several years now, but this seems like the right move. Boesch is the hot bat, Santiago is a viable backup 2B, and Raburn is no good in the outfield, so there really isn’t a need. And we definitely need the additional relief pitching with the way our bullpen has been taxed, and with the doubleheader today.

how close is Carlos to coming back?
If he’s close, then Figaro goes down when he comes back

Boesch goes when Carlos returns
There’s not enough AB’s for Boesch if you’re going to give regular AB’s to Guillen at DH and Damon in LF. Raburn probably comes back for Boesch or another RH OF. Whoever fills the spot won’t get many AB’s either way, so it will probably be someone who we don’t consider a legit prospect.
Hopefully Raburn is going to get a position
I think this is a sign of the end of the superutility Raburn era. Hopefully they are going to pick a position for him (probably 2B or 3B) and see if he can develop enough of glove to be an everyday player either here or elsewhere.
If that were the case
I think Thomas or Bonine, both who are likely unavailable, would have gone down. The Tigers obviously want to expand the bullpen, but I think they want to give Raburn more ABs as well. I don’t think he’s the guy that comes up when Figaro is sent back down.

i say stay with Boesch until he stop hitting the ball & scoring runs..He dangerous so..Right now the Tigers needs he bat.

I, for one, will sleep better knowing Raburn is not in the field.
Figaro’s stats are here.
ERA: 2.55
WHIP: 1.274
BB/9: 2.5
K/9: 6.9
my perdictions for DH today will be dangerous, tigers lose 2,most definitely Bondo willn’t survive the 4th 0r 5th innings, as far the 2nd gameY,Porcella willn’t survive 5th 0r 6th eitherway , Yankees win when it is all said and done. my huge opinion!

Figaro qua, Figaro la, Figaro su, Figaro giu . . .
Sorry to go all operatic here, but I simply cannot contemplate Figaro, particularly in a utility role, without singing “Largo al Factotum”
Tigers hopefully, DH is rainout, their a threat of rain in Detroit, see what happens!

surprised Raburn didn't get even a mention in yesterday's post
first guy I thought of. Let’s all say a quick prayer for our buddy David Tokarz, though, who lost his starting outfielder (over Jackson) today.
In all seriousness, Raburn’s bat was starting to win me over last year – hard not to take him seriously with the numbers he put up – but as Rob said in this thread, it appears it was just a fluke.

before the season end, Bondo & Raburn will be a ticket to never never land, not baseball at least for Bondo, too earily to tell about Raburn’s fate with the tigers!

Wow thats crazy…hes 27 years old….he will make a good reliever for someone.

I think there's a difference between negative/pessimistic and trolling
I tend to be negative/pessimistic; this looks like trolling to me.
Rayburn a two fold problem
Its kinda hard to hit and get a rythem when you dont have many chances or at bats. Which I believe is the problem with Rayburn. He played more the last season when carlos went down and played decent. I dont think it was a fluke. But, on the other hand something had to be done and I guess this was the logical choice being Kelly can also play infield/outfield positions as Rayburn and Kelyy has no options. He plays or he can leave the team. But, I would think the Fiagaro pitching here is temporary and another shoe will drop within the week. And I think boesch wll stay and they will bring up Jeff Larish. That will give us two extra outfilelders Boesch/Guillen and two extra infielders Santiago/Larish. Larish is hitting like 260 with 10 extra base hits 5 homers/5 doubles. I also think at this time they will send Avila down and bring up Robello. And before all you jump on me on how you like double AA, I do to. But, he needs to work on his offense. More at bats will do this in AAA. Rebello is having a decent season down in AAA. Its my team in my mind, and, these are the moves I would make.
a couple of problems with this.
our entire bench would be LH/Switch hitters. secondly, didn’t Mike Rabelo just go on the DL?

Don't like it
Why couldn’t we have optioned Bonine for a game? There’s no need to carry 8 pitchers in you bullpen.

because you can't option players for just a game
He’d have to be down there for 10 days, unless someone is placed on the DL.

Great point
Get Raburn some consistent ABs, see if he heats up. Hopefully it’s like a 10-day microwave.
