Bottom of the batting order = Awful
I swear we are using a lineup where when batters 6 through 9 come up, we might as well take the field, and somehow we are still winning games! Santiago really needs to be our starting shortstop and send God-awful Adam Everett to the Whitecaps though I doubt he could hit there either. Rayburn CANNOT play outfield anymore, Sizemore is still a work in progress (Still pissed that they let my Tiger Polanco go for a paltry 1.5 mil) and Laird, if he wasn't a decent defensive catcher, wouldn't be starting for any team in the league (Don't we have anyone in our system to bring up at catcher?). I have now vented, time to go watch Verlander throw a gem..... Peace!

Who is the Rayburn person you speak of?
Verlander is indeed throwing a gem today.

I think the only thing I agree with in this post...
is Ramon starting.

Agreed
There are so many things wrong with this that I wanted to reply, but I simply didn’t know what to write without sounding like a 100% asshole. I still contend that while his batting average won’t be as good and his defensive abilities are not phenomenal, Sizemore will do enough to make most Tigers fans (i.e., those who are not bitterly mourning the loss of a certain peanut-shaped head) forget about Polanco. I love him already!
Don't worry about sounding like an asshole

I could do it more
and there are times where I ask myself why I’m trying to be nice while wanting to rip people apart. Hell, I’d rather not be banned for constantly ripping people apart and starting arguments all the time, but I definitely have those feelings.
Do it will no ill will and no actual personal attacks.
Keep to the data and support your arguments. You may tick off a few people but it will not be personal, which I doubt you would do anyhow but the more discussion, the better.

I know that
and if you’ve read anything I’ve posted before, that’s the case. I just figure it’s easier to not argue with ridiculous statements at times.
It always help to be reminded sometimes.
Because I can feel the snark monster urging me to go ballistic every now and again. Not in regards to this but at other times.

since there are a slew of unspecified complaints
and I like to argue, I’ll defend the post point-by-point:
1) Okay, most appear to agree Santiago should start. We have agreement. I think we can agree the Everett-to-Whitecaps was hyperbole and not how getting rid of him would go.
2) Rayburn (like fellow evil twin Jason Verlander) has been terrible lately in the outfield. Perhaps there are defensive metrics that support him somewhat, but if I have to see another attempted basket catch or pointless slide in the outfield that costs us, I will get even more exasperated. Not sure where the “anymore” part comes into it; I don’t think age is a factor. But he is going to have to figure it out. Seems like he’s been okay at second this year.
3) Sizemore is a work in progress. That’s hardly controversial, or definite, as statements go. It seems to me he’s doing okay. If he continues to build on his successes, we’ll be okay. But “work in progress” is still true. Although Polly is ridiculously overpaid, we could have gotten him for less, so I can at least sympathize with Billy there.
4) Laird wouldn’t start in the big leagues if he wasn’t a great defensive catcher. Also not controversial. Unless he was a pitcher or a wizard at short, I’d have to agree with Billy there. Catchers are allowed to be subpar on offense.
5) Billy called the Verlander gem hours before the opening pitch.
And yet we have posts about how people would like to unleash their inner asshole in response to the original post. Take it easy on a brother Tigers fan! Or at least articulate your disagreements…without ripping anyone apart.
Raburn is fascinating.
He seems to have trouble navigating the outfield but has enough speed to cover territory that lets him have chances at fringe plays… then the wheels fall off and he makes terrible decisions or just cannot make the play and manages to exacerbate a bad situation.
Dontrelle Willis apologist.
yeah, he needs to catch it once he gets there
he’s been looking Michael Jordan in a Durham Bulls uniform lately.
Lighten up
And realize that completely unfounded, general, and conclusive statements will most likely receive a lot of negative attention. The Raburn statement was ridiculous as was the Laird statement. Once again, humor is not recognized and personal sentiments are seen as being mean. I’m glad that I share a common love of the Tigers with people, but that doesn’t mean that I have to always be nice and agree with everything that they say.
I didn't intend to come across as heavy-handed
You didn’t seem mean to me. It’s just that you had some inconclusive/unspecified complaints of your own. Might as well get them out there.
I do not agree with Ramon needing to be the starter.
I think the ‘platoon’ or sorts (splitting up the SS PA’s) pretty evenly works. I don’t think Ramon is a starter in the majors, thus not an upgrade over Everrett in the total package. Then again, i am more down on Ramon’s defense than the rest of the fan base seems to be. I think Everett is a much, much better fielder than Ramon.

Ramon wasn't really a good anything during his first stint with the Tigers, neither was Infante.
The “FUTURE OF THE DETROIT TIGERS MIDDLE INFIELD” took longer to develop into MLB bench players, fringe starters. Ramon will get time as long as he contributes but I really don’t think he is suited to every day play.

Man. Omar Infante.
I remember being heart broken when he left. For the longest time I thought “HE JUST NEEDS SOME MORE TIME, HE WILL BE GOOD, JUST LET HIM PLAY PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.”
Oh, if I could be that delusional again.

And Brent Dlugach is equal in fielding value
Why did we resign Everett again?

That's lofty expectations of Dlugach's glove.
Adam Everett is a top 3 defender in baseball, in my opinion.

He was
But he seems to have fallen off- we differ a little here insofar as I trust the scouts a bit more on fielding, and when they say that Everett has lost range, I’m apt to believe them.

I don't feel like Everett's lost much of his range.
He’s pretty low on the fans list in 2009, but there’s a lot of guys with less votes, so they carry uncertainty (like Alcides Escobar though he’s always been lauded for his glove).

I do
think that would me more an offensive upgrade, but it would be a downgrade from’s Adam’s D. And actually, when was the last time our “bottom of the order” was any good?
We have two weak spots in our lineup
but they’re the two spots where you’re almost expected to have weak hitters. Ultimately, I think not having a top-shelf DH is a much bigger problem than a weak hitting shortstop or catcher.

It can.
But DH’s around the league are the position of the highest production value. If you have to platoon at DH, it’s probably a weak lineup.

I think the trend around baseball
is DH = overvalued commodity. There’s a reason why Jermaine Dye is out of work. Or Carlos Delgado. Teams are (smartly) allocating their resources to more versatile players.
by ChrisDTX on May 4, 2010 7:15 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Dye is an aging bat that can only hit righties
The idea, though, is you want to have a player at DH that can mash.

Partially true.
But the teams that are resorting to platooning the DH spot aren’t good offenses. Seattle comes to mind, and I’m drawing a blank on the other one(s).

I wish we would have taken more interest in
Alex Gonzales when he was available this spring, imagine him batting fifth in our line-up,very big mistake by DD this offseason IMO
Cory Smith
I have been corrected sir!
Ok, you got me, Raburn not Rayburn, my bad. But once again let me reiterate. Sizemore, 0-4 last night, Inge (who I left off previously because I’m not trying to be hater but it’s getting tough once again) 1-4 with 3 LOB, Laird 0-2 before getting hurt, Everett 1-3 before getting replaced (awesome). The bottom of the order is still weak weak weak. And as far as Everett being a better shortstop than Santiago, I will take however many more errors Ramon makes for 200 plus points at the plate. Now can I go see Porcello go pitch a gem in about 90 minutes? :)
You're really using a single game as a sample to prove your point?
And I’ve called 1 month a SSS. Wow.
Haha
