WHO SHOULD GET THE AX WHEN GUILLEN RETURNS?

WHO SHOULD GET THE AX WHEN GUILLEN RETURNS?

Star-divide

Adam Everett is just about the worst hitter in the league, especially against right handed pitching.

Brennan Boesch was called up when Guillen went on the DL, but has been hitting a ton, and they'd risk the wrath of a lynch mob if he was sent back to the minors.

Brandon Inge hit under .190 last July, and August, and September, and now again in May.

Don Kelly is a utility infielder/ outfielder who posted a .400 OBP in Toledo last year, but hasn't been hitting in Detroit. He's out of options and would have to clear waivers.

Ryan Raburn has an option left, and has not been hitting this season, but hit .291 with 16 homers in a part time role in 09

Carlos Guillen has been on and off the DL for a couple of seasons now, but has hit when he's healthy.  And then there's that $ 13 million a year contract.

Donny Worth could be the odd man out, even though he is hitting .400 and plays solid defense at three positions.

I'm not sure I understand what exactly the "ax" is

you can’t just option or DFA players like Everett, Inge, Santiago, or Guillen (ha ha on putting him in the poll though).

Getting the AX means being chopped from the 25 man roster.

Anyone can be DFA’ed, but only Worth, Raburn, or Boesch can be optioned. Any other player would have to clear waivers before being released or sent down.

In the case of Everett or Kelly, for example, they’d be designated for assignment, immediately removed from the 40 man roster, and then the Tigers would have ten days to either trade them, release them, or outright them to the minors. A player who is more than five years removed from his major league debut can demand his release before being sent to the minors, so they’d likely be gone.

that's what I mean

none of the guys on the list are bad enough to be worth paying if they are released, if you ask me..

Well it wont be Everett...

…becasue OPIE IS THE MAN!!!….In all seriousness though he plays a flawless short and hes not going anywhere…He gets great jumps on the ball off the bat…Often overlooked.

Everett's defense still grades as one of the tops in the league

according to fangraphs
LINK

But overall, his value is below that of a replacement level player.
Question is: How is Worth, compared to an average replacement player?
VALUE

Everett would do less damage if Leyland NEVER let him swing a bat (bunting ain’t swinging!) against a RHP. No amount of defense at shortstop can make up for a .450 OPS.

it is really hard to get a feel for worth

he should have been better in the minors than he was. maybe he’s finally putting it all together. or maybe this is just a fast start that will peter out. We shall see. Hoping for the best, of course.

Worth

would hit better than inge and field just as good we should give not trade inge to the twins so he hits against us.

I agree...

…But they wont send Inge down.

I'd say cut Donny Worth... Cuz I've never even heard of him!

Seriously though, I agree with most of you. Although Worth has looked pretty decent with the bat early on, there is no way he will continue to hit at that clip. His minor league stats are nothing to get to excited about. He did a great job filling in end of story.
Guillen was indeed a funny answer, suprised to see Santiago, Cringe and Boesch on the poll though.
Good poll though. I guess we will all find out soon.

Is this like a Justin/Jason Verlander thing

only with Danny/Donny Worth? If so I suggest sending Donny down as well so we only have Danny.

A couple of factors are in play here....

Of course, the fact that some players have options and others don’t is a factor, as Alli mentions. Taking Everett, Santiago, Inge, Kelly, or Guillen off the 25 man roster would be irreversible moves. They’d be off the 40 man roster as well. Kelly might clear waivers and accept a minor league assignment, knowing that he cleared waivers.

Worth’s defense has been very good, and he appears to be able to handle multiple positions. If the available job is essentially a platoon partner for Santiago, and backup for Guillen and/ or Inge, then Danny might be a good fit.

Everett has been getting less and less playing time recently. It’s not just him, but the combination of Everett, Laird, Inge, and previously Sizemore that left us with too many near automatic outs at the bottom of the order. Santiago has twice as many AB’s in May as does Opie.

With Sizemore no longer stationed up the middle, and Guillen in his place, Everett isn’t needed (you’d think) to provide stability to offset the rookie. And that’s something Santiago and Guillen could do anyway.

The Tigers will have some decisions to make for 2011, and I’m sure they’d like to find out whether Worth is in the long term plans. No time like the present.

Then, there’s that elephant in the living room. Everett’s .184 average vs RHP’s is just the start of it. He also has a .184 OBP vs RHP’s, and a .429 OPS. He has zero homers, zero RBI, zero BB’s. He has ten K’s and only 9 hits against RHP’s. That’s 78% of the AB’s for the Tigers this year- against RHP’s. The elephant just shit all over the sofa. Surely DD can smell it!

The nice thing about Everett...

…is that he has been hitting better as of late and his defense is always good.

Edgar Renteria

We could bring back Edgar to play shortstop. A perfect double-play partner for Guillen. Neither one would ever field a ball, so there would be no botched double plays. Maybe the offense would score 1000 runs. Wait…we almost tried that in 2008, didn’t we?

I thought that's what Scroll Lock was for

Then again, I have absolutely no idea what Scroll Lock does, and have never pressed that button on purpose on my PC.

(Danny Worth, by the way.)

12:42pm and I Don't See an Announcement, Something unexpected Up?

If they were to designate someone for assignment, would the 10 day clock start the minute they file with the commissioners office, making it advantageous to do nothing till gametime? Guessing Everett goes, without 1.55 Million of contract and the faith of the skipper, should have been beaten out in spring training by Duggy.

Everette to me is replaceable by our minor leaguer with the best glove...

because he certainly can’t hit worse and if he does hit like Everette than we really haven’t lost much. But it’ll probably be Worth.

by madpoopz on May 28, 2010 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure that Worth is the answer to our shortstop needs....

but I’d sure like to see more of him to get an idea, rather than just tossing him in there on opening day. At this point, I’d want to see Willis, Laird, Inge, and Everett all walk away. Not sure yet about Bonderman or Damon. I’d like to see DD tackle the infield this off season, and the outfield/ DH needs a year later. Unless, of course, he brings in Crawford this winter!
