The Tigers finally got a day off after 20 consecutive days with games. I think I'll do the same around here today and just take it slow.

Use this open thread however you want and then we'll sticky it for the rest of the month.

yes, it was on the news

there were several there from the organization and DD was at the end of the reception line, shaking hands with fans (mourners) as they passed him on the way out. It’s very touching. Also, draped over the casket there is a huge spay of orange and blue flowers, which i also though was very moving because Mr. Harwell was Tiger Basball.

There's a video on mlive.com

Showing interviews with some of the fans at Co Pa, and DD is there, shaking hands and holding a cup of coffee. There was a line- seemed to be well organized, and an open casket for folks to come and pay their respects to Ernie. Well done, IMO.

If anyone goes by there, let us know what it’s like for those of us that can’t make it.

Happy Mother's Day

My mother became a Tigers fan because of me. The game’s ended before my bedtime and she would listen to them herself to tell me the score in the morning. I am sure she heard Ernie many times. She followed the Tigers for several of the years that I didn’t.

She died in 2001 at age 79. I will be in Michigan on Sunday and plan to stop at her grave.

I wish all the Tiger Mom’s on BYB a Happy Mother’s Day.

The graduate portion of pharmacy school (where you get the PharmD) is four years at most colleges

Since UT has you taking summer classes, that part is only two years. It’s a six-year program total because you spend the first four years getting a Bachelor’s degree (never mind the fact that I already had one of those).

I'm a little PO'ed at MLBTR

Okay, maybe it’s not the kind of website that carries news like Ernie’s passing. They don’t report on games and such, and the focus is on transactions (their latest is a look ahead at Tiger payroll issues next winter), but they shoved the Ernie story, without even a link, into a post on Milton Bradley’s latest tantrum and other “odds and ends”. I like MLBTR, and I check it out regularly, but Ernie deserves better than that. They even got the time of his public viewing wrong.

It doesn’t look like it’s going to be Armando’s night. Just gave up a 3-run HR to Josh Bell (though the fact that I’ve heard of this kid would indicate that he’s a highly thought-of prospect). One of the baserunners that scored was Joey Gathright who reached on a bunt single, however.

Meh

everybody has a bad night. Acquiring AG is one of DD’s under the radar heists. At least he had 1 good season at the big league level, right?

by ChrisDTX on May 6, 2010 8:33 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Armando's biggest issue last year was confidence

He went after hitters in 2008. He attacked them, and didn’t worry about them putting the ball in play. He was due for a regression based on his peripherals, but there’s no reason he can’t be a very good 4 or 5 starter if he regains his confidence and his command of the strike zone. I thought he was a great candidate to trade after the 2008 season. I thought that DD might ‘sell high’ on him, but that didn’t happen.

by Tigerdog1 on May 6, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think injury played a role last year as well

He had some elbow problems, and I think he kept them a secret longer than he’ll admit. His pitches just looked different from how they did in 2008, and I guess it was a bad sort of different. I only saw him once on TV in spring training and I haven’t seen much of him with the Mud Hens, but his pitches seem to look more like they did in 2008, and I’m definitely with you that when he’s healthy he has the stuff to be a solid middle of the rotation guy in the bigs. Plus I think he’s smart and knows how to work hitters (Now, “smart” does not necessarily equal “confident,” as last year will attest to). Hopefully this is just a one-time bad outing and he gets back on track his next start.

that they’d have “the core group together. Me and Carlos (Pena) are the only ones leaving”. The media takes that to mean he doesn’t expect to be back. No. It's not THAT bad...

It’s a passable superhero film. Really entertaining and good for a #2 film in a franchise.
Not as good as the original though.
Loved the acting, decent enough storyline, semi-hastily thrown together characterization of the supporting cast, and anti-climactic battle sequences. What I did like about it, was the fact that the “shoot-em-up” stuff fluff wasn’t the climax to the movie. And that Iron Man doesn’t resent his “power”. He loves himself, which is different from other superhero films.

iPad = ok

Used one that my dad got from work earlier tonight. The spell check feature is ok, unless you’re trying to spell something that isn’t in the iPad’s vocabulary. It is absolutely not a replacement for an actual laptop, more like a giant iPhone that doesn’t take pictures (seriously, add a webcam) or make phone calls. It was pretty cool to lay on the couch and mess around in the game thread (about 80% of my comments tonight were via iPad). If you want one, I would definitely recommend waiting for version 2.0 unless you have a fat stack of cash just lying around with nothing else you need/want it for.

And even then, you could donate that money to me instead :)

ZACH MINER UPDATE

Via Rotoworld:

Zach Miner (elbow) threw two innings Thursday in an extended spring training game and will do it again Monday.
Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said Saturday that Miner is “not quite ready” for a rehab assignment, but that could change depending how he looks Monday. The reliever has been on the DL since early April.

Brad Thomas is probably on the bubble

I would think that Brad Thomas is on the bubble when Zach returns to the Tigers. With an ERA of 5.40, an OBA of .392 and a WHIP of 1.86, he sticks out among the relievers in the Tiger bullpen. No other reliever has an ERA above 3.00. Thomas is out of options, so he’d have to clear waivers to be sent down to the minors. He has a major league contract for one year, $ 1 million, which some MLB team would probably pick up. There’s no shortage of jobs for lefty relievers.

Sounds like it’ll be a few weeks before Zach is back anyway. There may be another injury or event before that time comes.

Wings lose to # 1 seed San Jose, finishing their season a month earlier than they’re used to. All four losses by one goal, and actually out scored the Sharks in the series, but it wasn’t to be. Discussing the Tigers’ rotation in 2011:

The back end will have new people, which is difficult to forecast today because injuries have temporarily stalled Casey Crosby and slowed Jacob Turner, while Andy Oliver is undergoing a fiery trial at Double-A Erie. But look for at least two of those three to light it up at spring camp next February. And that’s when things will get interesting, very interesting.

Question

Anyone have Netflix- specifically the one that lets you stream movies via Xbox Live? If so, can you tell me price, selection and whether or not you’re satisfied? I’m thinking it’s a great idea to save some cash, but I’m also kinda wary…

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

Assist. Editor, Minor League Division, Bless You Boys

by David Tokarz on May 11, 2010 12:32 AM EDT reply actions

Fantastic

I believe it is free with any Netflix plan. I happen to be on the $10/mo plan, and the streaming is unlimited. There are about 750 movies/TV shows available at any one time. I actually don’t know whether you can ‘force’ a particular movie onto the streaming; I’ve never tried. The picture quality is good, not great. I’ve had issues with pixellation. If you’re not an AV-phile type guy, it’s not bad enough to be a major problem. If your use is going to be along the lines of “I’m in the mood to watch a movie.” versus “I really want to see this particular movie.” , this will be your favorite thing ever. Although I suppose if you want to see a particular film, that’s what mail-Netflix is for.

Two possibly relevant tidbits:

1) Netflix doesn’t get new releases for 30 days due to the contract they have with the studios. I couldn’t care less, but that’s a big deal for some.

2) I have it on my PS3. I can’t say anything firsthand, but it has a reputation for being somewhat router-finicky on XBOX. You may want to poke around the nets beforehand and see what others recommend.

To summarize: Hell yes. Get it.

by theRPS on May 11, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

So the selection for streaming is kinda limited?

President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.

Assist. Editor, Minor League Division, Bless You Boys

by David Tokarz on May 11, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes... kinda

What you’re going to have are about 750 movies in various categories (75 comedy, 75 drama, 75 TV shows, 50 suspense, etc.) that will pop up to be selected in the XBox app. These cycle in and out fairly regularly; it’s not a static catalog. In addition, you can place up to 100 movies in your Instant Queue via the web site. They will then pop up to be watched. They have about 15,000 of their total catalog of movies available to select for your streaming queue. The stream-able movie selection is pretty great for foreign/indie, documentary, and older movies. Most of the big hit Hollywood movies from the last 15 years or so won’t be available. If you want the collected works of Gwyneth Paltrow, you will be very disappointed. If you want to check out some Bollywood, some MST3K, and the African Queen, this is your thing.

So to compete my tortuously long answer to a simple question; yes, it’s kind of limited. Whether the limitation is problematic depends on your tastes.

If you know anyone that has Netflix, try to get them to let you check out the selection online. You’ll figure out pretty quickly how happy you’d be. They’re also pretty good with free trials.

Bunch of TV, yes

Big bunch.

Those movies will, by and large, not be stream-able.

Wasn't the score of game five 2-1 San Jose?

My Sports Illustrated reports it as a 2-0 game

I only remember a one-game series

They kept calling it Game 4 for some reason. Also, I have no idea what I did on 4 various nights in the last two weeks.

I haven’t had it since I was about 5, and I’m really hungry right now.

by Rob Rogacki on May 13, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't remember.

I haven’t been there since I was around the same age. BUT THE BALL PIT WAS AMAZING!

I've never been to Chuck E Cheese

When I was a kid, we had Discovery Zone (which, as far as I can tell, was Chuck E Cheese without the food). And the ball pit totally rocked.

I'm getting a new computer!

I’ll finally be able to get back into a game thread after 5 pm.

In related news, how long can I get away with this “I just graduated, so give me free stuff” schtick?

Shows Mike Rogers would:

1) Die at.
2) Never attend for that reason (plus, I’m not a fan of the music).

Though, I did go to Ozzfest 3 years in a row just for the sake of the road trip (and the final year it was the day after warped tour).

My old blog is Tigers By The Numbers.

Now I write at Bless You Boys.

Commenting here in an attempt to bump this thread back up to the main page

And in an attempt to say something constructive, um…anyone doing anything exciting this summer? I have class, work, my 5-year college reunion, the BYB meetup, a couple Mud Hens games, and one more Tigers game sometime in August.

Internship at a local radio station

Also back to the summer job on the weekends. And the Mudhens come to town in early August, so that’ll be a blast.

if your using a site like photobucket to store your photos...

than you can do it right through the website using the “edit:” function above each photo. If your just uploading directly from like a google image search than you have to save the picture to your computer, use a program like GIMP to resize the image, and than reupload to the internet using a site like photobucket.

Edit the HTML code

just after the <img… insert

height=xxx OR width=xxx

where xxx is the pixel size you want (usually I go no bigger than 400 for whichever side is larger). Make sure you space in between.

by Rob Rogacki on May 24, 2010 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I know

the whole photobucket process is lengthy, especially when I’m trying to find a relevant image quickly during a game thread. I try to find one that’s reasonably sized and then just shrink it manually.

by Rob Rogacki on May 25, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

question for the admins...

would it be helpful if I did a full fanpost on how to shrink photo’s, complete with screenshots?

Finally, I’ll understand it. Hopefully.

Ugh

Work won’t let us run FireFox anymore. If only they could understand that FF seriously cuts down on my web browsing time by making it more efficient! I hate using computers other than my own, ugh.

by rcpratt on May 25, 2010 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

can you run Chrome?

it’s a very nice browser as well.

by madpoopz on May 25, 2010 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope.

I can still workaround to install them, but they ain’t gettin’ the internet juice. Boo.

by rcpratt on May 25, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Update!

With some epic hax I got chrome to work, not FF but oh well. I even got flash installed which I could never figure out before wooo. Suck it admins.

Take a number

All I have here is IE 7. Not 8, with tabbed browsing, but 7. Anything over 250 comments on SBN takes at least 5 minutes to load.

by Rob Rogacki on May 25, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

We run IE7...but it does have tabs?

But yeah, it’s seriously disturbing how slowly this browser renders sites. The computer itself is slow, but not this slow. Just posting in this thread is killing me.

by rcpratt on May 25, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Mine gets tabs sometimes

It will randomly open a browser with tabs sometimes. When it does I usually reopen everything I had in that one browser. Still, it’s slower than hell.

Nice article on the Dickerson-Harwell connection

We were pretty spoiled as Tiger fans having Ernie for all those years, and we’re spoiled now, too. Article is here.

I love this quote

Zumaya on having Coke in the pen:

“He’s a great guy down there. He brings a lot of life. He’s exciting. He’s fun. I mean, he’s just a good person to have in our bullpen out there, because our bullpen, we’re pretty weird cats out there.”

Relievers should be weird. It’s a fact. (OK, Bill Lee, you can be weird too. But that’s because you’re a lefty.)
