The Domino Effect: Everett, Worth, downstream from there, and looking to the future.
The Tigers have finally parted ways with Adam Everett and called up Danny Worth to take his place on the roster. Worth will probably play as much as his productivity earns him, sharing time with Ramon Santiago at the shortstop position for the rest of the 2010 season in Detroit. But what does this mean for the long term future of the Tigers on the left side of the infield with Everett's departure and Brandon Inge's contract due to expire after this season? Here is a look at where the Tigers might go from here.
SHORTSTOP
Danny Worth has been called up, and Adam Everett is gone. But is Worth the long term answer at shortstop? How much time will he play with Santiago, a lefty/ switch hitter, also on the roster? That's really up to Worth. He isn't being recalled to sit on the pine. This is a real life major league audition for a starting gig in 2011. Danny's numbers in Toledo were pretty good, and his numbers in limited time in Detroit were stellar. Unlike Sizemore, he didn't struggle adjusting to the pace of the game in the major leagues when he got his shot.
Worth is batting .287 with an OBP of .330, a pair of homers, 18 RBI and led the Hens with a dozen stolen bases. If he can keep his numbers in that range at SS while providing at least average defense, the Tigers are in for an upgrade at that position (which really isn't saying much). All the indications are that he has a chance to stick around. We'll find out sooner, rather than later what he's worth.
Brent Dlugach- Brent has been getting the bulk of the time at SS in Toledo this season, playing 41 of 57 games in the hole. See comments below regarding his lack of ability to make contact and get on base, add some mediocre defense at SS, and he doesn't look like much of an option. Maybe the Tigers will promote Ciriaco or Iorg and put them at SS or 3B in Toledo, otherwise, they figure to put Worth at SS and Rhymes or Sizemore at 3B with the other playing 2B. We'll know soon where they're going.
Cale Iorg- The player that DD said would be "an All Star in the majors sooner than people think" looks more like the next Adam Everett than he does a major leaguer. He's hitting barely above the Mendoza line, with a horrid .254 OBP, only 11 BB's in over 200 PA's, with 3 homers. Add ten errors- though not the greatest measure of defense- and there's just nothing to see, here.
THIRD BASE
Inge is hitting a mediocre .237 with an OBP barely at .300, and an OPS of .704. This follows three consecutive months hitting under .190 to finish off the 2009 season. His defense has fallen off also this season, with only 8 out of zone (OOZ) plays and an overall ranking of 4th in the league defensively. Fangraphs suggests that he's a little above replacement level, but below average among 3B. Jose Bautista is having a monster year in Toronto, and Jose Lopez is one to watch in Seattle in terms of 2010 and free agency this winter. But this isn't about free agent options.
TOLEDO
A quick check of the Toledo stat sheet on the Mudhens website doesn't show any third baseman on the roster. There's a reason for that- there isn't one! Danny Worth was getting the bulk of the playing time at third, but he's now in Detroit as a shortstop. Wil Rhymes, a second baseman by trade and talent, and/ or Brent Dlugach, who has been the primary shortstop this year, could be filling in at the hot corner. Maybe Jeff Larish gets another shot at a position where he has at least some chance of cracking the Tiger lineup in the next five years or so, but he's been manning first base while Ryan Strieby is being converted into an outfielder.
Defensively, several options in Toledo look decent. But if you're looking for a bit of pop from this position, it's not there unless Larish is moved across the diamond. Rhymes has less than no power, although he is a contact hitter with speed that may have a shot at translating his modest numbers to the show. But at third base, he'd leave the team with no power in a position that traditionally provides some pop in the lineup. Dlugach is a K machine with modest pop for an infielder, but a sub .300 OBP and I think he'd struggle mightily at the plate in the major leagues because of his plate discipline and inability to make contact in AAA ball.
The best shot the Tigers have of filling this position internally (including extending Inge) is Larish, IMO. They probably aren't going there by the time all the dominoes fall, but Larish has a chance to hit in the majors, with some pop, and his defense has potential as well
ERIE
Audy Ciriaco- was moved from SS to 3B, either because his D at shortstop wasn't so great (and it isn't) or because they haven't yet given up on Cale Iorg as a SS (they haven't). But Audy is hitting just .235 with ten errors in the field. He's on the 40 man roster, but one has to wonder why. He has walked just 5 times (that's FIVE) in 33 games, against 27 K's- translating to an OBP of just .261. Okay, so he's got a shed full of tools. That's why he was protected last November. No solution here.
So, where does that leave us? The Tigers are likely to make a move to replace Worth in Toledo, but that doesn't mean that the guy that gets promoted is any kind of an answer for the vacancies that are created by expiring contracts after the 2010 season. Worth has a shot at replacing Everett, but I would not be surprised if DD had to go shopping for two players for the left side of the infield after this season. I'm tempted now to go into a discussion about replacements for the vacancies that will be created by the departures of Damon and Laird, but I'll save that discussion for later.

good article
Our lack of depth at SS and 3B is non existant. That is one of the reasons that I started the move Rawley Bishop to 3B campaign.
I think we all agree that three positions that produce no offense is to much. Hopefully SS, 3B and C are adressed in this weeks draft.
I cannot believe that I’m saying this but I can live with CRINGE at third. However, with all of that availible chedder next season WE MUST PAY FOR A SHORT STOP!

Larish at 3rd for Toledo 1st game tonight
one nice play at 3rd, double and two RBI’s so far 6th inning first game
I remain hopeful
that our Venezuelan pipeline will keep bringing us good fortune. Ive had my eye on Francisco Martinez in Lakeland for a few months now. The kid looks to be promising. 19 years old, and projectable at 6’1 180. Batting .310 right now. I’ll continue to bank on our young guys.

It's about time
Man am I glad to see Everet go. Now Inge should be next ,any of the kids would be an up grade on either one of those two. I’d like to know where to look to see how many runners Inge has left on base and double plays he’s hit into he has to lead the A.L. Come on Larrish. Sizemore somebody please!
I'd expect
Inge to be a bit underperforming defensively, given that he had double knee surgery this fall. It will be next year b4 the knees are 100%.
The batting – I just accept with Inge that his defense makes up for his lower than desired batting average.
That said, he’s beginning to get a bit long in the tooth. His career with Detroit will end sooner rather than later.
External all the way
With money coming off the books and such a mediocre crop of SS and 3B in the farm system I’d be shocked if the Tigers don’t go after whoever the top left side infielder on the market this winter. If Inge can get his average a little closer to 250 I could see him being resigned for a year or two at a discounted rate, but SS will be an external fill for sure.
Anyone know if Avila is catching tomorrow?
Figure it would be a good idea to carry on a good thing with Galarraga, regardless of the pitching matchup.
Larish at 3rd game 2 toledo
2 for 2, hr, 3 more RBI’s, announcer saying he has made some good plays…maybe he is energized with the prospect of 3rd. Mud Hens only have 9 position players tonight, wells out, worth on way to chi, another player being added tomorrow, am hoping Larish gets a long look at 3rd.
Gave this a rec.
Great work and nice supplement to the draft coverage going on.

Thanks, MP. And thanks for the bump, Kurt.
Not that I’m giving up on this season, but I think that the roster moves that are made this coming winter to replace the expiring contracts of Everett, Inge, Laird, Damon, Bonderman, Willis, and Robertson- will have a lot to say about how the Tigers are shaped for several years to come.
Don't think Bondo gets replaced
Nor does he need to be.

Larish playing third tonight in both games of a double header. A sign of things to come?
Rhymes goes to CF. Frazier to 1B. Dlugach at SS. Scrammer to RF.
Interesting. The dominoes are starting to fall….
it makes lots of sense to see how Larish does at third.
gotta give a good bat every opportunity for success.

What is proved?
Finally Everett goes and Worth gets a shot at SS. Sizemore(.360 at Toledo) has more pop for the long ball and had some decent AB with RISP in Detroit. Surrounded by Laird, Everett etc hardly a great spot, should play 2b/3b now. All of this shows that Leyland, the original “Stubborn Old Man” must go for Manny Acta or someone. Tiger Organization has some pitching & OF talent but no catching and sparse IF. Given Dumbo mediocre record with FAgency (Willis, Renteria, J Jones, Huff etc) I’m not wild about him either. Ilich deserves better value for his money at GM & Mgr. Starters seem good altho Porcello needs to come back. Valverde, Cabrera, Boesch a great core of talent. Go Tigers. Look at Trammell again???? Look at Yankee,Red Sox, Cardinals org. Comerica is not a bad place to be with good fans, a good owner, And a good tradition. Tiger fan since 1940.
Neither Willis, Renteria, Huff, nor J Jones were signed as free agents. All trades.
DD’s free agents have worked out well. Ordonez, Pudge, T Jones, Lyon, Valverde, Damon, Rogers…the exceptions are Percival and Everett. It’s those extensions that have killed DD’s plans. Robertson, Bonderman, Inge, Guillen, Rogers extension, Jones extension, Casey’s extension. The exception is Polanco’s extension. DD has had mixed results on trades.
How many of those were true flameouts, though?
Bondo got hurt and lost almost two years due to a circulation issue that nobody could predict. Robertson lost pretty much a year due to his elbow. Inge was playing on stumps after the All-Star break and really should have spent some time on the DL in hindsight. Guillen’s body broke down as he was shuffled all over the diamond, which is not altogether surprising.
Rogers got hurt, but he was also near the end of the line. Roller Coaster finally just coasted to a stop, which was going to happen. I don’t remember the details of Casey’s extension, but I don’t believe it was exorbitant.
Everett didn’t cost much money, relatively speaking, either last year or this year. A moderate gamble that ultimately didn’t pay off, but it was almost on the level of petty cash.
Willis – yeah, he was a spectacular flameout, really the poster boy. If DD had extended him for 2 years at $8M per, instead of 3/$12, it would have worked out better, sure.
And let’s not forget the big elephant in the room — Maggs’ contract that everyone was screaming about last year when he was hitting .265 with no power. He turned his production around when his personal life stabilized and it looks like a lock that his 2011 season will vest for $15M.
by HawkeyeEdward on Jun 8, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions
You could say that Magglio's free agent contract was a good one, then the extension (vesting option) was "bad"
By a “bad” contract, I mean one that no other GM would take off DD’s hands, even for free. Despite being one of the more productive hitters this season, few would argue that he’s worth $ 18 million.
Whether or not these contracts were bad due to injury, the fact remains that DD loaded up on multi year extensions, and an amazing percentage of them blew up on him, while the vast majority of his free agent signings have worked out very well. Stil, no GM has signed fewer free agents, at least since 2006 (and Valverde is the only multi year free agent in that time) and no GM has signed more lucrative extensions than DD has. I’d like to see some more balance in his methods, although using free agency as a last resort is an understandable practice.
DD didn't see the salary bubble pop
That’s really his only fault. Salaries started dipping with the economy for everyone except the truly elite free agents (maybe 3 per year). Your secondary free agents don’t sign for the same money today that they did 5 years ago. The contracts for Bondo and Nate were very in-line with other similar SP at the time…DD was hoping to lock them up “on the cheap” as salaries continued to rise. Unfortunately for the Tigers, he used this strategy in excess and the bubble did pop. If the bubble hadn’t popped when it did, we wouldn’t notice that money as much because lots of guys would be making 10M and pitching like Bondo is right now. (I guess we’d still feel the pain of Willis and Nate).
I think that DD gave out too many extensions to unproven and washed up players.
- Bonderman hadn’t proven that he was a $ 12 million pitcher, yet he got full value for what he’d have gotten on the free agent market, plus full value for his arbitration years remaining, with the club eating all the risk of injury.
- Willis was a case of just flat blowing the scouting report, and betting $ 29 million that he’d reverse a sharp two year decline, just after he led the NL in runs allowed with a 1.60 WHIP and a 5.10 ERA.
- Robertson was never more than a back end of the rotation pitcher, yet he got $ 21 million before he was ever to test the free agent waters.
- Inge had never put together two good halves, but was given a four year contract.
- Sheffield hardly played the season before the Tigers got him, and gave him an extension through age 42.
- Guillen was paid Miguel Tejada money but lasted only one year at SS, a year when he led the league in errors. Once he switched positions, he was not worth his contract. $ 48 million more.
Too many big extensions. Too many gambles pre- free agency. Too much risk that they’d not perform or would be injured. On the flip side, no other GM signed fewer free agents, and he signed no multi year contracts for free agents for 07, 08, or 09. Five new free agents total in three years, counting Francisco Cruceta. He needs to take a more balanced approach in the future.
Disagree on Bondo
His 2006 was incredible, and the first half of 2007 featured him pitching himself into All-Star contention.

I just don't get why people hate the Bondo extension...
you put it into context for the time and the Bondo extension was great. No history of injury, good pitching the previous years, young. How is that a bad extension?
Follow my Mechanics blog and music on Twitter
Bonderman was still unproven when he was given the extension.
As were several of the players that got big extensions following the 2006 season. The money given to Bondo was equal to what he’d get in arbitration for two years, plus what he’d get as a free agent for two years. No discount for the Tigers, and they ate 100% of the risk of injury. His numbers weren’t bad, but he had never put together a full season. His ERA was still north of 4, with a WHIP never better than 1.3 in his career at that stage. That’s incredible? His performance in the LDS was incredible, but he struggled mightily in the second half, especially against the Twins.
Moreover, he was a two pitch starter, one pitch being a slider which puts huge wear on the elbow. Once hitters laid off the first pitch slider, which was generally intended to trick hitters and was outside the zone, he had no answers. Lots of pitchers have good half seasons, but that’s no reason to give them four year contracts for money that they’d get in arby or on the FA market anyway. Bad move by DD, and it blew up on him.
The press at the time was talking about him being an ace in the making
His first-half 2007 made DD look like a genius and it wasn’t until thoratic outlet syndrome derailed his career that people started to talk.

I'm aware of what the press was saying
but if you’re gonna lock a guy up, there should be some benefit to both sides. Security of a long term deal to the player, and at least a little savings to the club. Bondo got what he’d get if he was a perennial 15 game winner, on a four year deal, after one good season where he faded big time down the stretch.
I, for one, cautioned against the risk of the deal at the time. Same with Guillen’s deal, and Magglio’s vesting options, and Robertson’s deal, and Sheffield’s deal, and Willis’s anything they did with him. DD went to the extreme in giving out all those extensions, and the other extreme in avoiding free agents after the 2006 season.
this is a contract that we can't really judge though...
because we’ll never see how he would’ve done if he hadn’t had thoracic outlet syndrome. Baseball injuries are a risk of every contract, but is it fair to judge a player’s contract partially because of a non baseball related condition?

I agree
TOS is, in this case, a freak occurrence. In absolute terms, Bondo’s contract has been a waste because he basically hasn’t pitched since ‘07. However for the time he’s been on the field, he’s been pretty good. Hopefully he continues to pitch well this year to earn a cheaper extension.
As far as contracts go, Bondo's certainly wasn't the worst.
And certainly wasn’t the biggest mistake that DD made giving out lavish extensions. But it was all part of a huge number of big extensions given to players that were either washed up (Willis, Sheffield, etc) or not quite proven after one decent season- or half season, as was the case with Bondo, Inge, and Robertson. The sheer quantity of payroll commitments carried with it a huge amount of risk, and sure enough, it came back and bit DD in the arse when, one by one, injuries and poor performance left the team with a roster full of over paid players.
At the same time, no other GM signed fewer free agents. While it’s understandable to go to the free market as a last resort because the bang for your bucks isn’t the best, free agents can be targeted to meet the team’s needs. We have seen year after year go by without meeting the needs of the team because all that money is tied up in lavish extensions given to the heroes of 2006. I just hope that DD uses a more balanced approach going forward.
Brandon Inge
Contrary to the majority opinion I still believe this guy plays superior defense, has good power, is a good team player and clutch hitter. Why he cannot cover the low outside corner of the plate remains a big frustration. He is hitting better recently but he must continue to end of season to be around longer. I omitted Austin Jackson as a key core player who will improve his OBA & power as he matures. This season not likely but the future is now with proper leadership on bench & FO.
Inge can't hit
He might play good defense, but he does next to nothing at the plate. His slugging is near .400 for his career, which would be okay if he his career OBP was over .308. He is not clutch, on fangraphs he hits .240 in medium leverage situations and .230 in high leverage, AKA not clutch.
Also, good team players don’t bitch about having to move positions.
I think that Brandon Inge just needs to change his name to Jose
Maybe he will play like Jose Bautista or Jose Lopez
Is Miguel Tejada worth a prospect or two?
Baltimore will soon start a salary purge – Given that production at third and short leave a little bit to be desired is Miguel Tejada worth a couple of prospects? He would certainly hit more than any option we have at third and short and probably could be had for a couple of low level prospects.
I was just checking the list of 2011 Free Agents and the cupboard looks pretty bare at Third, Short, and Catcher so it will probably force a trade to improve in those areas. For right now, Tejada might be a good option.
Whadda Ya Thinlk?
seems like they do this every year
being that they’re terrible.. every year. same thing happened when Luke Scott and Aubrey Huff became available. We got dicked on the Huff deal last year, AND the Washburn deal.. which is why i don’t think we should try to add veteran players on the decline with large contracts for young talent at the deadline.

IMO, DD waited too long on the Huff deal
I can’t fault him for adding Washedburnt, but you can’t be surprised that he went down in flames. Three years of his four year contract in Seattle, he was very mediocre. He had a first half well above his recent norm, and he regressed once he landed in Detroit. At this point, he’s still unemployed.
Huff has always been streaky. Also not a surprise that he flamed out, but he’s the type of hitter that can carry a team when he’s hot. Just didn’t happen for us. Orlando Cabrera, on the other hand, heated up for the Twinkies when they got him, and gave them a much needed boost. By the time DD made the Huff move, the trade deadline had passed, and all that’s available in August are those players that can clear waivers, or players that are picked up on waivers. Generally, they’re over paid salary dumps and can be had on the cheap. Just didn’t work out.
I was advocating
the nay-saying of picking up a veteran (Tejada was the suggestion) at the deadline. I liked the Huff deal more than Washburn’s last year, but I was pleased with the fact that DD tried to strengthen the roster for a stretch run.
This is why I read BYB everyday!
Great insight and answers exactly the questions I’ve been asking.
That being said- I’m a fan of Inge, but I don’t see him in Detroit next year. His defense is slipping as he gets older. I think he made more plays with bad knees last year than he is this year with bionic knees. He lost whatever mojo he had before last year’s ASG. He can hold the spot for this year, but after that it’s time to find a younger, better hitting man.
I don't know how much you can attribute to Brandon's knees
Inge was inconsistent at the plate long before he had issues with his knees. Just about every season, with the exception of 2008 when he rode the pine most of the season, he’s had his ups and downs. Half a season of greatness, and half a season of whiffing. He goes through stretches where he looks like he can’t recognize pitches at all. He rarely comes through when the team needs a runner moves along, yet he has hit .290 for half a season twice in his career with the Tigers (2005 first half for Tram, and 2006 second half).
I like Inge, but I don’t know what to do with him. He’s not worth the money they’re giving him, but his glove is still solid. When he’s in a slump, he kills the team.
point is the Tigers has to rebuild top ,middle and bottom
let me say, Leyland will absolutley, resign his post as manager this year, my huge opinion, when the team doesn’t put up offense like they should end of the road for JL, so many problems to tactle……anybody knows the contact that damon was issued? damon is no effect what so ever, even boesch has more RBI than damon and he is a rookie with huge power, which damon doesn’t so, you be the judge?..Now, the infield has major issues at 3B, SS, even 2B and catcher position 90% of the Tigers infield needs to be addressed on the off-seasons – brings me to right back what I said, REBUILD, that what I see happening. Finally, we have to wait to rebuilded and pick trades that tigers can account on for offensive puposes , proven , consistently year in and year out.

So who is next
Spidey -
If you are right about Leyland (and I do not think you are) who will be the Tigers next Skipper – I’ve felt for a couple of years that Brookens was being groomed to follow the Marlborough man in Detroit. Having Brookens replace Andy Van Slyke as first base coach probably is a good indication that I am on point. But that is only if Jimmy L calls it a career AFTER the season.
If Leyland leaves mid season it would probably be one of his coaches that failed in other cities (Gene Lamont or Lloyd McClendon) that would finish out the year, I could even see McClendon bringing his cheerleader out of the broadcast booth and into the dugout like Trammell did with Gibson.
Rod Allen would be a terrific Billy Consolo for Manager McClendon.
Ryan Rayburn
Played third base before we moved him to second and now he’s a terrible outfielder. I say move Rayburn back to the infield and let him have a shot at playing third.
theres a "y" in "cry"...
and that is a reaction to Raburn fielding at 3rd.
