Dan Haren traded
I know that there were some people on here who thought that Dan Haren could be somebody that D.D. could possibly be interested in trading for. While i'm not sure that the Tiger's should really be in a position to be buyers or sellers in the coming week, what would you guys like to see the Tiger's do as the trade deadline approaches?
Dan Haren went to the Angels by the way.

There is absolutely no point in talking about being "sellers". There's nobody of any real value to sell.
You might get a second tier prospect for Damon, and toss the season into the river in the process, but there’s nobody on the Tigers that anyone would want that isn’t a central part of the Tigers future.
On the other hand, DD will have to make some trades anyway this winter, and there is no reason he can’t get started on those this year, helping the team’s chances in 2010 in the process. The Tigers will need replacements for 3B, SS, Catcher, at least one SP, a set up reliever, a No. 2 hitter, and a No. 3 hitter. Not all of those positions will have any good players available on the free agent market, so trades will have to be made anyway.
Taking Haren off the list is a big blow to the Tigers chances of filling that opening in the rotation. Oswalt is the only pitcher of comparable talent still available, and he’s said he won’t waive his no trade clause to play in Detroit. Maybe that can be changed if the Tigers are willing to pick up his $ 16 million option for 2013, but that’s risky.
DD should always be looking to upgrade the team at every position possible. There are holes all over the lineup and in the rotation at the moment. The AL Central is a mediocre division that’s up for grabs. DD has said that he wouldn’t trade blue chip prospects (they only have one- Turner) for rental players. I wouldn’t want him to. But I’d trade anyone for a starter in Haren’s class, and I’d trade any other prospect if DD could fill any one of those holes with an above average major league starting player.
Valverde is the only guy I think you could sell for something good.
Especially with his most recent performances (or the month of July in general) he might be a guy you sell high on.

Or Verlander, Cabrera, Jackson, Boesch, Coke, all players that they need to build around.
But DD has so many bad contracts on the books this year, that nobody will take them.
Just be happy that these contracts are expiring, and that the team is in a race right now.
I don't remember locking in Valverde long term.
Which makes me question the validity of him being a guy we’re building around. He’s got one more year after this one, correct?

He might have an option for a 3rd year
Not sure if it’s a player or team option.

It's a 9 mil Club Option
Expensive, but at least it gives the club some flexibility.

Agreed
Just look at the Angels…they “bought” Haren at 7 games back. If you can be a buyer at -7, the Tigers are certainly buyers at -2.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
Couldn't we match that?
Saunders is an innings-eater, but not what I would consider a quality starter. The other two-three prospects aren’t blue chippers by any means. My theory is that the PTBNL will be some sort of stud. I remember that when we traded Smokey Weaver, we couldn’t name Bondo as part of the trade until a certain date/time, so he was a PTBNL initially, although the organization knew they were getting him.

Probably.
But DD didn’t want a rental.
…okay, that was just me being spiteful but I think the Tigers could have given the Diamondbacks enough, by taking Haren and another salary dump. Oh well. C’est la vie.

Haren's under contract through at least 2012, with a 2013 option. Hardly a rental.
I think that the Tigers could and should have done better, but the beauty of the package is in the eyes of the interim GM in Arizona.
I know Haren's contract and I was making a sarcastic comment about why DD didn't pull the trigger on a possible Haren trade.
The Tigers could have and probably did make a package that could be considered better but that boat has sailed.

The Dbacks are stupid, that's really it.
Jacob Turner is better than any of those players they got. Turner + Galarraga is a package that surpasses what the Angels gave up.
There are two explanations: DD balked at giving up Turner for some reason, or that the Dbacks are just that stupid.
Even if DD balked at giving up Turner, they’re still stupid. If that’s what you’re going to get for Dan Haren, you might as well just hold onto the guy.
We dont know how good Turner will be.
Its a crapshoot really as there is no sure thing in baseball. I would have given up Porcello or Turner for Haren. I would have dont this becasue he is a proiven talent and you know what you will get. That being said he didnt want to be here kind of like Washburn last year. It may have been a reciepe for disaster.

I don't know
Haren could of been our #2 for the next 3 years I would of traded Turner or Oliver and a few scrubs to attain him. How many Detroit fans want to here wait till next year till things pan out. I will give Leyland this were only 2 games out with Maggs and Guillen and Inge gone but were facing a tough road trip and I have that wierd freaky Friday feeling he might keep us in it but I doubt it. Bottom line with all the payroll coming off the books and the injures we have a wail till next year type of feel to it…. go figure
Exactly what is there to wait for?
Free agents? WHAT free agents?
Trades? What trades can’t be made now that can be made later?
The Rays may be willing to trade Bartlett, if he’s the answer at SS, but not in the middle of a pennant race. Maybe Beltre is a free agent at 3B. Or guys like Cantu that can’t use a glove at third. It’s looking like most vacancies will have to be filled by trades, and there’s little or no advantage to waiting.
Players generally cost more at the deadline
Since teams that sell are often in short supply (especially this year).

The D-Backs heavily overvalued Saunders
Period.
The Angels have been lowballing teams for the last couple of years with Saunders + prospects, and I’m shocked that it finally worked.

the DBacks got. Confusing that they accepted that when they demanded Turner and Oliver from us.

When you listen to the retarded rationale
It makes a lot more sense. They see Joe Saunders as an affordable LHP that’s only making 1 mil this year, that has playoff experience, and is a “proven winner”. Jerry DiPoto actually cited career wins and winning percentage when talking about him, it’s f***ing ridiculous.
Nevermind the fact that Joe Saunders is a terrible pitcher, and is probably due to make 6-7 million next year in arbitration (and they actually think he’ll replace Haren’s production, and succeed in the NL……in that park). Baseball America ranked Skaggs as LAA’s 8th best prospect (EIGHTH) and he’s an 18 year old in A ball, Corbin is a 20 year old LHP in A+ ball (good peripherals though), and Raffy Rodriguez is a throw in reliever. Ugh, so much for the “close to the majors pitching” they supposedly wanted.
I actually told my girlfriend the the other day that I hoped DD wouldn’t balk at the cost, because I thought some other team would swoop in and steal Haren out from under us. After all, that’s exactly what happened when we traded for Miguel Cabrera. Who were the teams that were in on him? The White Sox, the Yankees, and….oh yeah, the Angels.
Payback doesn’t feel good, at all.

what we could get for Raburn.

I'm sure there's some NL team
That would overvalue his “positional flexibility”, or something like that. Not sure what that would mean in the way of a prospect return, though.

DD usually seems to do pretty well in them.

To man LF in DDJ’s absence. I’m not sure how Moore feels about trading within the division, but he didn’t seem to have any problem trading Mark Teahen to the White Sox.

Maybe convince Moore that Armando and Oliver are worth Greinke. I also want a pony.

Greinke
would be a bigger land than Haren, IMO. I think his price tag would be lower too. I’d send Oliver + a decent ML arm there in a heartbeat for him

There's no way his cost would be less than Haren
Greinke is still performing well this season (better than Haren, anyway), and he’s got a Cy Young Award to his name. Then you throw in the reasonable contract, face of the francise, and I don’t see how it’s feasible for that cost.
I mean, you can assume that all teams are as retarded as the Diamonbacks, but I don’t like to operate under that assumption.

It is the Royals
If anyone’s as retarded as the Diamondbacks, it’s Dayton Moore.
Hell, he might feel threatened by how bad the Haren trade was and try to out-dumb the D-Backs to get his title back.
