Tigers get Jhonny Peralta
For Geovanni Soto.
From MLBTR:
The Tigers acquired Jhonny Peralta from the Indians for minor league pitcher Giovanni Soto, according to the team. About an hour ago, Ed Price of AOL FanHouse reported on Twitter that the Tigers were discussing Peralta.
Brandon Inge and Carlos Guillen are on the disabled list, so Peralta gives the Tigers infield depth as they chase the Twins and White Sox. The infielder switched to third base last season after years at short. Peralta hasn't hit much this year, as his .246/.308/.389 line shows. The 28-year-old makes $4.6MM this season (about $1.7MM remains) and the Tigers have a $7MM option for 2011 with a $250K buyout.

I don't know a thing about him
But you can your ass inge would be hitting considerbly less by the end of the year if he had enough at bats but I hate to see Soto go so soon
HORRIBLE MOVE!!
Horrible… but not because of Soto getting dealt, even though i think he will be good…
This is horrible because now Sizemore will not play regularly… Sizemore is better in the field than Peralta, and at the plate, RIGHT NOW!!!
My guess is they will send down Rymes
and kick Sizemore back over to 2nd. Also i do believe thaat Peralta will move to short after Inge returns. Strietby or Frazier coming up?
Someone suggested he could play SS when Inge gets back
I dunno about that. Everything I’ve heard about him from my Indians friends defensively is terrible.
I think I see what DD is trying to do (buy low on a prospective SS, who’s only 28), but ugh why did it have to be Jhonny Peralta.
Maybe David could tell us all the details about Giovanni Soto. All of his peripherals look great, he’s 19, left handed, and has a great ground ball rate. Please say this isn’t going to suck mightily.
I had a prospect profile posted a while ago
Long story short- projectable lefty with good numbers and great control and great secondary stuff who knew how to pitch.

No
He was throwing soft stuff now, but he’s got potential to add more MPH to that fastball.

He's 19 years old!
To be honest with myself, I just don’t like Peralta, and Magglio’s injury has rained all over my parade!
What are the positives of this deal?
How long is he signed for?
Does this let Sizemore move back to 2B?
Can he play SS anymore?
Is this a move for this year or next?
I seriously want to be happy but this deal does not pass the sniff test for me.
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

This is a stop gap move, IMO
This is just a stop gap move until Inge returns, IMO. Peralta is a bit below average defensively according to fangraphs UZR (Inge is average this season), and also below average for a 3B at the plate. He’s had better seasons offensively, and maybe he gets hot.
He will get about 1.7 million the rest of this season, and there’s a $ 7 million option for 2011 with a $ 250 K buyout.
As much as anything, I think this is DD letting the players know that he’s not giving up on this season. The team has to be in need of a boost about now.
If Jeff Larish is sent down to make room, I’d be very disappointed. I want to see Jeff get his chance to hit. It’s possible that this isn’t the only move, and another player, such as a Raburn, will be traded and that will clear space. I agree with Steve that Rhymes should be the one to go. He certainly doesn’t belong batting second.
BTW- Now the Angels have lost Joel Piniero for 6- 8 weeks.
Sad, sort of.
I enjoyed watching Rhymes last night. He had those two knocks and good speed. After watching TB play, we could use a little speed. (I knew that, the Rays are just a reminder!)
One might argue that he is more deserving than Sizemore of the extended look. The glove can’t be as bad. He’s faster and he bats lefty.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
This is the straw
that broke the camel’s back. We won’t win this year, we wouldn’t have even with Ordonez, Guillen, and Inge down the stretch. It’s inconceivable that DD thought adding an average 3rd baseman would help the present situation. I guess Peralta isn’t too old and is an average player, but he is about to hit free agency and get paid market value for his talent. Maybe I would do the trade for a pair of fillers or a guy with average Major League potential, but I just don’t see the value in a 3rd baseman who is about to make what he is worth. Especially when we give away a very promising, yet very young, lefty starter. Personally I thought Soto was becoming one of our best prospects. DD its been mistake after mistake since 06, with the Cabrera being the only good point, you don’t deserve your GM position anymore.
Really?
I thought that whole trade this last offseason was pretty awesome.
But if you’re not an Austin Jackson/Phil Coke/Max Scherzer kinda guy, I guess that your deal.

Ok
I’ve got to say that once I posted this, I immediately thought of the Granderson deal. That was a pretty good deal, but it seemed like it only had a minimal chance of working out. Thankfully it did work out for us since Jackson has been a #5 most of the season, and Granderson is basically on pace to replicate his 2009.
The Jackson for Joyce deal was excellent too
and the Hernandez for Galarraga trade was great too.
We all know his bad deals (Renteria, Washburn, Huff wasn’t too bad because we gave up literally no one for him), but you can’t just ignore all the good stuff before 2006 that happened. There’s a reason that team was in the playoffs, and it’s because it was built pretty well, and they had some luck.
He deserves the opportunity to build this team again with all the money coming off of the books. If he gives out some god awful extensions and signs crappy FAs, then yes you could definitely bash DD. But I think he’s earned the opportunity to at least try.

Hmm interesting
I suggested this a while back, as he could fill at either SS or 3B. However, this doesn’t make much sense being that we’re not going anywhere anyway.

Another thought
He could fill the hole as our new shortstop though.. this is kind of intriguing in that aspect

could we keep our discussion on this in the main post
TD did a great job getting a post up but most of the discussion is going on here.
