Didn't we just play a game like five minutes ago?

Star-divide

Tigers lineup: Jackson 8, Santiago 6, Damon dh, Cabrera 3, Boesch 9, Raburn 7, Laird 2, Rhymes 4, Worth 5. Apparently Peralta's flight will not get him there in time to play.

Rays lineup: Rodriguez 2b, Crawford lf, Longoria 3b, Pena 1b, Joyce rf, Aybar dh, Brignac ss, Shoppach c, Kapler cf

Jason Beck tweeted last night that Peralta's flight was due in at 11 AM

I don’t know how long of a drive it is from the Tampa airport to Tropicana Field, however.

The only way to avoid a sweep is to beat the AL starter from the All-Star Game.

No big deal, right?

My two favorite teams are the Tigers and Brewers. Drunk tigers. That sounds about right.

I like Bob Feller's quote. "If you baby your arm, you wind up with a baby arm."

Stamina has to be built up over time. But the fact that pitchers can go much farther than they’re being limited to these days has been conclusively proven over a century of baseball, IMO. Nolan Ryan is about to challenge the common wisdom, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

by Tigerdog1 on Jul 29, 2010 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Maddon.

No coincidence, IMO, that two of Mike Scoscia’s proteges are now two of the most successful managers in the game. Maddon and Bud Black. It’s about HOW they play the game, and not just WHO they have on the roster. (or is it whom?)

by Tigerdog1 on Jul 29, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Random question

I’ve had a Tigers fan tell me that the 2005 Tigers went in the break in realistic contention for the wild card, then completely collapsed during the second half and a lot of ugly and unpleasant stuff happened both on the field and off. Is that true?

by David Tokarz on Jul 29, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

What I remember....

A lot of this comes down to Pudge, who was going through a nasty divorce at the time, wanted to bring his son with him on team flights, or it was basically impossible for him to have custodial time during the season, which was the time the kid was not in school. Pudge complained about the trade of Urbina and Ramon Martinez for Polanco.

Then, the Tigers were 8 games back at the deadline, but had eight teams in front of them for the Wild Card. DD traded Farnsworth for Roman Colon and Zach Miner. Farns was the third closer that year. Percival went on the DL but was due back when Urbina was traded. Urbina filled in nicely, then Farnsworth. It was pretty clear that DD was running the white flag up the pole on the season, and Pudge bitched and moaned the rest of the season. He hung Tram out to dry. Tram and Gibby were being insulted and there were rifts in the clubhouse.

Leyland contacted Pudge to get him on board with the program before he met any of the players.
There was also an incident in the parking lot between some of the players. Colon was in it, and Bonderman. And an incident on the plane where Urbina got drunk and Farnsworth was gonna kick his ass. That’s when he got traded.

The thing is, I've never been a fan of Dunn.

he’s a butcher in the field at anywhere but first base. He says he doesn’t want to DH, and I recall some whining when the Reds traded his buddy Kearns to DC, even though he wasn’t performing.
But the guy can hit for power, and he can put numbers up. I don’t want another 2008. And I want the comp picks, or I’d be happy with him for another year. But if they want Turner or Oliver, forget it.

We’re just good enough to be in games all the time and just bad enough to lose those close games. Which makes for a tortured fan base.

I agree with both of you.

We’re not horrible. The Rays are a really really good team. We easily could have won the last 3 games. A clutch hit here or there and we’re sitting pretty.

I’m not worried. I’m not giving up. I like watching the young guys play (Worth and Rymes were fun today), and I enjoy baseball win or lose.

Granted, I’m bummed about all this losing. And I wish we were doing better, but I’m an optimist. We’ll win some games. We’re not as bad as everyone thinks… as long as the pitching holds out.

No real chance IMO.

He’s succeeded at every level he’s played at. He hits, he hits for power, and he gets on base 100 points more than his average. He always takes time to adjust.
Every time he is gonna get a chance, he doesn’t get a chance.
