I must correct something I said earlier

I misunderstood something Mickey Yorke said earlier. As it turns out, the Twins and White Sox are NOT playing each other. The White Sox are playing the A’s and the Twins are playing the Mariners. The meteor can wait, although I don’t have a lot of confidence in Oakland or Seattle.

i know i am alone in this but...

… i would love to see the Tigers sign Beltre this offseason if he declines his player option..

i really think Seattle’s park killed his #’s…..

Great D, a good bat… sounds good to me… plus the A’s tried to sign him, and Beane is very careful with FA signings…

by jpolut on Jul 30, 2010 9:21 PM EDT reply actions

also

if you look at Beltre, he only plays when he’s getting paid in the offseason. not the guy i want on my team.

look at his numbers in LA…and now in the last year of this contract. there’s a difference between working hard and really concentrating and earning your pay.

by TonyOrlando78 on Jul 30, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

whatever

just because he had one great year that happened to be his contract year does not mean he didnt concentrate other years… that is unfair and just untrue…

by jpolut on Jul 30, 2010 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

there is no way that..

i could possibly be he broke out that year, while playing his last year in a decent hitting park??? players do have career years…

by jpolut on Jul 30, 2010 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe...

but it would do the same to every right handed pull hitter… he still would be worth around $8 mil a year for 4 or 5 years… his defense is out of this world…

I don't care if his WAR was 8 billion; I don't want him behind the plate

I want a guy who can gun runners out behind the plate. Now, I’d take Martinez as a DH, sure…

thats really not a good way to look at it...

people always say a run saved is as good as a run earned. well it works the other way also..

He only cost his team 7 runs last year, but earned them 28… that is huge at catcher…

by jpolut on Jul 30, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

And what, sub in a catcher that isn't worth as many runs?

You can use the DH to further augment the wins. That swing at the catcher position is huge. You add more by having Martinez at C than at DH.

not technically...

but he wouldnt be as valuable since catchers are just plain more valuable..

when calculating WAR, catchers receive runs, while DH’s have runs taken away…

by jpolut on Jul 30, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh.

His bat makes up for his inability to throw out runners. He’ll get you more wins at the plate than he’ll lose by not throwing out runners. The swing, especially at a position like catcher, is huge and more important than a fondness of having a catcher good at throwing out runners.

That argument's not gonna work, because I'll never be satisfied until another Pudge comes along

Besides, I was taught baseball by a former catcher. He was most emphatic in the importance of defense. Anything you get offensively is gravy.

by linuxit on Jul 30, 2010 11:06 PM EDT reply actions

I don't post much

And I’m not a “OMG FIRE LEYLAND” kind of guy. However, bringing Valverde in for the 8th was indefensible. Letting him throw 60 pitches is indefensible. Leaving him out there after the Beltre double AND the IBB was indefensible. When you’ve made Rod Allen… ROD ALLEN question you then you have screwed up. That was some Bad Decision Theater.

Other than that, great win.

i dislike him on principle

i really do appreciate that he wears his emotions on his sleeve. too much credit is given to political correctness and giving the “right answers.” if you think something went wrong say you’re pissed, not that you “just have to work that much harder next game.” either way, he comes off to me as too high-strung.

i much prefer the light-heartedness that some players exhibit, knowing that they are doing what they want and making good money at it. I’ll never forget watching todd jones spinning fernando rodney in right field before a game while margaritaville played over the stadium speakers.
