MLM Recap: Scott Sizemore hits a double, a homer and walks as Toledo beats Columbus
First, the Tigers signed three draft picks- Bryan Holaday (C, Texas Christian), Alex Burgos (LHP, FL CC) and Corey Jones (2B, Cal State Fullerton). Holaday is a great defensive catcher, Burgos is an interesting left arm and Jones is... meh. Also, in the pipeline are a few prospect profiles- Daniel Schlereth and Robbie Weinhardt. Just waiting for a couple BA Annuals to come in so I can track their histories better.
Recap time!
Billy Buckner went 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits (2 homers) with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Casey Fien pitched a hitless 9th with a strikeout. Scott Sizemore was 2-4 with a double, a homer and a walk.
Thad Weber had a pretty good start- he went 7.1 innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 6 hits (1 homer) with 5 strikeouts. Cale Iorg was 2-5 with a double, Rawley Bishop was 2-4 with a homer and Andy Dirks (again in CF) was 2-3 with a double and a walk.
Luke Putkonen went 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. Daniel Fields was 1-3 with a homer and a walk (his strikeout numbers are improving a tad, a great sign).
A: South Bend 4, West Michigan 3 (12 innings)
Jared Wesson did okay, going 5 innings and giving up 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. Michael Rockett was 3-6 with a double and Wade Gaynor was 1-6 with a double.
SS: Connecticut DNP (off-day)

Good news about Holaday
Curious to see if he starts in Lakeland or West Michigan

Daniel Fields is to me what Casey Crosby is to David
A couple of interesting facts from the FSL:
-Daniel Fields ranks 8th in the league in BB (34) while having fewer plate appearances (249) than anyone that ranks ahead of him.
-Fields is the only teenager in the top 25. The highest ranked teenager other than Fields is Philly’s Anthony Gose with 26 BB in 381 PA.
-There are four teenagers in the FSL with at least 100 PA. Of them, Fields ranks 1st in BB/SO, 1st in OBP, and is a close second in OPS.
Personally, I’m thrilled with what Fields has shown at this level. While Fields’s strikeout rate is 30%, he is showing elite patience with a BB rate of nearly 14%. That kind of patience is tough to find in a teenager playing his first pro ball. If he develops some power and cuts down on his strikeouts, he could be something really special.
how many of his K's are looking?
seems like the guy doesn’t like to swing!

Fields has shown the patience to take the free pass indeed. It isn’t so much that he just stands up there and doesn’t take the bate off his shoulders though. One thing I’ve noticed in watching him is regardless of where he is in the batting order he seems to have the leadoff man mentality. He makes the pitcher throw several pitches and he seems to wait until he gets “his pitch”.
Beyond that, his speed is amazing! He seems to fly almost effortlessly around the bases and in the outfield.
As mentioned above it is even more amazing when you consider how much older everyone else is!

I LOVE plate discipline and OBP in prospects.
Too often, we see a prospect with everything else, and all the tools in the world, but never makes it because he can’t hit a curve, or K’s too much, or has holes in his swing. That’s really good news on Fields.
Dude, you are so preaching to the choir
Number one thing I look for in tools guys- discipline.

I'm really excited about Fields
But maybe they should move him back to the infield. CF is a bit occupied these days.
Yeah it is
It’s my understanding though that they didn’t feel he had the necissary skills in the infield to continue to play there.

Indeed
Worst case, he can always move to RF. He’s supposedly got power potential (despite that SLG of .362) and power is supposed to be the last tool that translates into games.

That's what I was thinking too
His arm is certainly strong and pretty accurate in CF.
Then again I want Rawley Bishop moved to third and I had been preaching Larish to third since he had his breakout season in AA Erie.
Oh well

I wanted that too
But it could be he sucked at taking grounders. I don’t know- I just trust the organization.

Fields
I suppose they signed him based on his overall potential. But he was a shortstop and i thought the organization was looking for shortstops, catchers and 3rd basemen. Speaking of 3rd base, the Tigers should move Sizemore to 3rd in Toledo If he continues to hit as he now is, then bye bye Inge in 2011!
