Open Thread - July Trade Rumors
I wanted to start a thread so everyone could chat about the trades going on around the league without cluttering up the Tigers stories our great BYB Editors work so hard to provide. So... Here it is.
(I stuck this on the front page due to relevance - feel free to rec so it stays in the sidebar, folks - Alli)
Starting off... Cliff Lee to the Yanks? Beats the Twins getting him. That said... A rotation with Cliff Lee, C.C. Sabathia and AJ Burnett with Phil Hughes and Andy Pettite is outrageous..
Next up... With Lee looking like he will be donning pinstripes... Who do you think the Tigers can (and will) pursue? I think Dan Haren may have just seen his price rise, but NY is also out of the bidding if they do pick up Lee so its a 50/50 proposition in my opinion.
Share any of your thoughts below or new trade rumors, I would love to hear them.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Bless You Boys writing staff.

Did you mean Dan Haren?
I don’t think the Tigers would even look at pursuing Rich Harden. As for Haren…it would be great if Detroit could somehow land him seeing as the Tigers would be able to keep him beyond this year at a reasonable salary. Plus, he would be moving from a somewhat hitter friendly park to a more pitcher friendly ballpark in Comerica. The price won’t be cheap, however.

Here's the latest from Rotoworld's clippings:
A source tells Buster Olney that the Yankees want a resolution regarding Cliff Lee “before the game” on Friday.
“There has to be an answer before the game,” says the source. According to Olney, the Yankees told the Mariners that their current offer is their last and best offer for the left-hander. Also, there has been no talks of opening a negotiating window on a contract extension for Lee. It’s a bit of a risk to let him hit the open market after the season, but the Yankees would likely have the upper hand to re-sign him, anyway.
Source: Buster Olney on Twitter
Olney just said on ESPN: “We’re right on the one yard line with this deal.”
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Mets will now “turn strongly” to acquiring Ted Lilly from the Cubs.
According to Sherman, the Astros still want too much in return for Roy Oswalt and will pay too little of his remaining contract. Lilly, 34, will be a free agent after the 2010 season, so he would strictly be a rental. The Mets won’t be alone in their interest.
Source: Joel Sherman on Twitter
Comment: Drayton McLane drives a hard bargain, due somewhat due to consistently over valuing his own players. The Strohs are in no hurry to deal Oswalt, who’s one win away from tying Joe Niekro for the all time wins record among Astros (not saying much, but then they don’t got much right now to talk about). Get closer to the deadline, with Oswalt’s $ 37 to 50 million still on the books, and they may be more motivated. They either eat salary and get a decent prospect, or they let him go for very little, salary and all. The Tigers make a nice fit because they have the payroll available in the near future. There is still the obstacle of a full no trade clause.
According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday, the Mariners have told many interested teams that they are “out of the Cliff Lee sweepstakes.”
The Reds, Twins, Mets, Rangers and Cardinals, among others, have also shown interest in Lee, but it now appears that they will have to find an upgrade elsewhere. Davidoff has also heard that there was a “snag” between the Yanks and M’s for Lee, but all indications point to it getting done.
Source: Ken Davidoff on Twitter
Comment: The rich get richer. And Lee comes with two first round picks if he walks. Picks that can’t be used as compensation for other Type A free agents that the Yankers might decide to hoard.
A source tells Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com that the odds of Javier Vazquez being traded to the Phillies for Jayson Werth is a “50 to 1 shot.”
The same source also describes the Rays as a longshot for Werth. If the Phillies trade the soon-to-be free agent, they will seek an impact player who they can control beyond the 2010 season. As much as the Phillies want pitching, Vazquez will be a free agent after the season, as well. As for the Yankees, they could choose to sit on Vazquez right up until the deadline, possibly moving Phil Hughes to the bullpen until they are able to find the deal they want.
Source: Ken Rosenthal on Twitter
Comment: The theory here is that the Yanks get Lee, which makes Vazquez available, and they flip him for Werth.
DD needs to sack up and get a starting pitcher.
Brett Myers, Javier Vazquez (if the Yanks get Lee), and Dan Haren are others that might be had.
Lee to Yankees,Vasquez to Tigers...?
I know his numbers are poor in New York, but he’s always sucked in NY…
And he’s a Free Agent but if he rights the ship away from NY, perhaps he gets to a Type A/B free agent.
I don’t know. Just tossing ideas around!

Vazquez once vetoed a trade to the Tigers, reportedly for Zumaya, before the 2006 season.
Give Johnny Damon back to New York? Their outfield kinda sucks.
Thanks for the bump alli
I would still love to see them go after a SS but I think the window to trade with TB may be closing fast.

ESPN and MLBTR are indicating that a deal for Lee to the Yankers is all but done.
That would seemingly make Vazquez available.
I've liked Javier Vasquez since he was an Expo.

Sounds good to me.
If we were only to get Haren for the rest of this year, I’d say no to trading Porcello. But he would be guaranteed to be in Detroit the rest of this year and all of next, with possibly a third year tacked on. I’d say that is great value considering his salary isn’t outrageous and we have so much money coming off the books at the end of this year. Who knows if it would be a straight up deal, Porcello for Haren though…
Haren's contract was 4 years at 2008.

M's to get Jesus Montero, Zach McAllister, and David Adams?
Montero- one of the games top prospects not already in the majors.
McAllister- a 22 year old RHP bumped from AA to AAA this year with solid numbers
Adams- an infielder playing mostly 2B, currently has a .900 OBP, and no errors in 36 games at 2B this year.

Via MLBTR…
The Mariners are backing off, according to Sherman. The Yankees believe they are no longer in the Lee sweepstakes, as the M’s have gone in another direction (Twitter links).
Hahahahaha!
Apparently Oswalt won't go to Detroit or Chicago White Sox
What a prick!
Seriously? You don’t want to be part of one of the strongest rotations in the league when healthy (the White Sox) or part of a team with an annual Cy Young candidate in Verlander, MVP in Cabrera, good, young players, and a solid rotation?

RANGERS GET CLIFF LEE
The Rangers will acquire Lee and Mark Lowe for Justin Smoak and three others, according to Sherman (via Twitter).
Here's the deal
Seattle gives up Lee, Lowe, and cash (Rangers can’t take on salary)
Texas gives up Justin Smoak, Derek Holland, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and one more
Not Salty or Holland.....
The Mariners also get Josh Lueke and Matthew Lawson, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (via Twitter)
Blake Beaven is a 21 year old pitcher.
Lueke is an AA RH pitcher.
Lawson is a 2B.
Smoke was the Rangers 1B

Wishful thinking on the part of M’s fans, I guess.

Tigers need Haren for one reason, plus he is a #2 or 3 starter
What do Verlander, Porcello and Oliver have in common. They use to have 4 pitches until Tiger management reduce them down to three and look at the result? Verlander should be an ace of the AL not just the Tigers. An all-star, give him back the 91m.p.h fastball. Porcello needs the extra braking ball and more importantly give Oliver back his cutter and he has a good one. With Haren, he has 4 pitches, now will Tiger management dare to reduce him down to three.
I think it's hard to make a case that Verlander's been screwed up

Yunel Escobar headed to Toronto for Alex Gonzalez, among others. Don’t think we ever had much realistic interest in Yunel, but still worth noting
B.Inge's facial hair advisor

That's a steal for the Jays.
This year, Escobar has increased his already high walk rate and maintained his low strikeout rate. He’s just suffering from a low BABIP. I don’t care about the lack of power — his glove and OBP already make him an above average short-stop.
by StringTheory on Jul 14, 2010 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
From what Braves fans say
He was a pretty huge malcontent, and regularly took plays off and botched routine plays. If that’s the case, then Atlanta probably had to get rid of him under the circumstances (though it sucks to sell so low on him).
Great deal for Toronto though. The change of scenery might do Escobar some good, they got to sell high (lol) on Alex Gonzalez, and they didn’t give up anything of real value. I really wish Dave could’ve gotten in on that.

Casey Crosby Fanclub
If we’re going to give up one or more of of our stud pitching prospects in a deal or deals, I’d like to know the seriousness of Casey Crosby’s arm difficulties. In three pro seasons, he’s had Tommy John, a great season in low A, and so far this year elbow pain keeping him out until late June, three starts in the GCL (8.76ERA) and now back to the DL.
Fanclub, any inside information?
It would seem that Casey himself probably has no trade value.

Ben Sheets?
Not sure I like that idea. His K-rate is down and both his BB-rate and HR-rate are well above his career averages.
For comparison’s sake, Jeremy Bonderman’s Fangraphs page
I hate the Ben Sheets idea
He’s old, and an injury waiting to happen. Speaking of Bondo, I saw someone speculating on some blog about trading pieces away, such as Jeremy and Guillen. I’m all for trading either of these guys, being that A.) Bondo most likely won’t be back next year, so let’s get somethign in return and B.) Some teams in tight races may be buying a veteran bat, which Carlos and his $13 M can provide. Plus, he’s hits from both sides which is a plus, especially for an NL team. Maybe he’ll play a role in our pursuit of reliever.

Trading pieces away = giving up
If either Bondo or Guillen is traded, it just creates another hole unless we get something greater in return.
Thus far...
Tigers have expressed interest in Haren and Ted Lilly. On the reliever front, Aardsma and Michael Wuertz and Craig Breslow are apparent targets too.
No real tangible inquiries on Drew or Sheets (all speculation i think)
And meanwhile Lynn Henning writes that the Tigers should be sellers instead of buyer at the trade deadline. Article here. (he actually makes a semi-coherent point)

And frankly, I’d rather have the draft picks we will get for anyone that leaves as a free agent.

Also, he mentions that the Tigers were scouting Michael Wuertz in Oakland, not Ben Sheets (thank Avila).

I have never been against trading him
However, I don’t want the Tigers to just “sell high” on a rental. If they trade Boesch, it should be for someone else of value that they can control for multiple years. If the Rays want to trade us one of their young shortstops for Boesch (and filler), I’m ok with that. I just didn’t want a Boesch-for-[insert old expiring contract here] type deal.
I’ve never seen Boesch as the savior that others make him out to be, but I’m also higher on him than you are (which, to be fair, isn’t saying much). I think the Tigers should be hesitant about dealing him. If the right offer comes along, take it. Otherwise keep him.
I actually agree
No way we should give him up for Ted Lilly, for instance, but if KC really offered us that package, it would be a tough choice for a lot of Tigers fans.

The more I think about it
The more I want Adrian Beltre to decline his option and to take 5 years, 60mm to come play for us. He’s like Inge, but with a better glove and a far better bat.
Assist. Editor, Minor League Division, Bless You Boys
Free Scott Sizemore.
I'm skeptical of Beltre
I think Fenway and a strong lineup are working their magic. I remember all of those years in Seattle. I have a feeling we’d get 5 of those from Beltre. If he’s smart, he’ll decline his option and re-negotiate with Boston.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. I think I'll stop picking Tigers.
I think Adrian will fall somewhere in the middle if he were in Detroit
He’s in a right handed hitters paradise in Fenway right now, and that obviously helps his stats quite a bit. Safeco Field is notorious for killing right handed power hitters, and that obviously killed his production accordingly.
I’ve softened somewhat on my stance to sign Adrian at all costs, especially because of the bidding war that might ensue in the offseason for him. He’s obviously the best 3B, but would he be, say, 8 mil a year better than Inge? Though you’ve also got to take into account that Brandon is going to be 34, doesn’t have the track record of offensive production that Beltre does (imagine Inge playing his home games in Safeco, seriously), and there’s no guarantee that Inge keeps up the positve offensive production he’s provided this year. The defense is a wash, so you’re not going to lose the highlight reel plays.
I think I’ve talked myself back into wanting Beltre at all costs.

Hey, it isn't our money.
I would love to sign Beltre. But as mentioned, his stats aren’t going to be quite as good, because Fenway helps his numbers out quite a bit.
Still, at worst he’s still better than Inge, and as long as it doesn’t get ridiculously expensive, sign him.
That's fine

Well they're going to spend the money somewhere

I'm worried about the length of contract Beltre will want
He’ll probably look for 4+ years, and I don’t want him for that long…especially if it will be at 12M per year.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
Same here
that’s the reason why I wouldn’t want him to come here. He knows he doesn’t have a lot of high production years left and wants a long term deal. We know all too well about aging veterans with ballooned contracts. No need for another one of those
B.Inge's facial hair advisor
Rod Allen's humor consultant
And yet we'd all go out and sign Carl Crawford to a 20mm per deal
(not you guys specifically, but that’s the contract I’ve heard most often).
Look, he’s 31. So yeah, there’s risk. But if you’re not going to develop the players you need, then what other choices do you have? Dealing what little we have left in the farm system for a 3B so we can repeat the cycle all over again?
If you’re not willing to develop players and if you’re willing to sell the farm at every opportunity (and even long-term assets can go bad- Gary Sheffield and Dontrelle Willis say hello) then suck it up and pay the money. Also, get used to a bad team.
Beltre is the only guy on the market that fits our gaping hole at 3B. He does it with the same strengths as the incumbent 3B does, but significantly better (he’s been a 4 win player for most of his career while Inge is lucky to break 2). I know he’s a type A free agent, and I know he’s going to be expensive. But if we’re going to throw money at a problem, why not 3B?
