Alfredo Figaro recalled; Robbie Weinhardt optioned to Toledo
The Tigers have been playing with an extra reliever since having their bullpen taxed about a week ago. It looks like that will continue, at least for a little while longer.
The Tigers announced a pair of roster moves today: RHP Alfredo Figaro was recalled, and RHP (and adoptee by the Bless You Boys crew) Robbie Weinhardt was optioned to the 'Hens.
Figaro has a 27 ERA and 7.50 WHIP for his only appearance in the majors this year, a two-out, three-hit, two-walk affair in May.
Weinhardt hasn't had the best of luck, but he also failed to keep his pitches down, which caught the eye of manager Jim Leyland. He has a 9.17 ERA and 1.81 WHIP after being touched for two hits and a walk yesterday against the Yankees. Leyland told the press:
When you need a ground ball, you can't throw everything chest-high.
"(Robbie) Weinhardt was up, up, up, up, up."

For the season, he's 10- 6, with an ERA of 4.17, a WHIP of 1.46, 112 K's and 39 BB's in 124 innings.
and a 1.42 WHIP in his last ten games.
Not great numbers, even if he translated them directly to the majors. Too many base runners.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Check his FIP
It’s 3.60, and he’s got a 2.90 FIP against righties. And those splits hold up long-term.

Okay, DT. I guess it's time to get over the game 161 buffoonery that Leyland subjected Alfredo to.
Still wondering if and where Figaro is on the SP depth chart, or if he has any realistic shot at a 2011 rotation spot. I s’pose much depends on what DD can find this winter.

I'd use him as a reliever long-term

Stupid Question
Could Figaro take Bonderman’s spot in the rotation for a turn or two? That’s more of a statement on Bonderman’s struggles than on any faith in Figaro.
I can't believe I ate the whole thing!

I cannot stand freking Alfredo Figaro
Boooo to that move
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
Shake it off Robbie. Get things back on track in Toledo, see ya back in Detroit soon!

Robbie needs to keep the ball down.
Sounds a bit simplistic, I know, but sometimes the sheer adrenaline rush makes a young pitcher over throw and the ball comes up. Me thinks that Casey Fien had the same issue, and he doesn’t have the stuff to get away with that.

why the BYB adoptee?
Hey, guys, I’m new to the blog (which I hope will excuse all stupidity for at least a year) but am wondering why you say he’s an adoptee. I myself love the guy. Is there a backstory?
I think that we just like him

he just has a lot of fans here
I was hoping he’d make the team to start the season after his Arizona Fall League performance, and I’m sure others have their own reasons.

Because Jim Price confuses him with Freddy Dolsi, who has a cool name.

I'm all for sending Boesch back down
I know this doesn’t relate to pitching and I don’t know who, if anyone, is available in Toledo or below to replace him, but I just don’t see the value in the embarassing swings he is taking at the plate recently for quite some time, now.

Probably Andy Dirks
I love me some Andy Dirks. He’s a dirtbag/grinder/scrappy guy who could be a great fourth OF.

Hardly any point now. Toledo's season is over in a few days, and we'd want BB up to work on some things anyway.
