Lou Piniella will retire effective immediately after today’s game. Tram is apparently not a candidate to replace him.
Wasn't he going to retire at the end of the season anyways?

Miggy's OPS has to be getting close to
1.1. There are going to be a few votes that Hamilton won’t get.
I was reading a thing Buster Olney wrote about top MVP candidates
and he had Cabrera as the AL MVP and made a point I think should be noted: he plays half his games in a pitcher’s park and still has the numbers he does.
by kendra.michelle on Aug 22, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions
The Rangers team is batting
8 pts higher. Hamilton has more around him. If I got the vote, I would go for Miggy, but I fear that will not happen.

A closer’s main stat is save percentage. But he’ll go 70 innings tops in a season, so he can only have so much value to the team. AJax plays every day, every inning.

MVP and ROY races
I posted this under another thread in an MVP discussion.
There is a strong contingent of MVP voters that insist that the award has to go to a player on a playoff team. The award is for the player that is “most valuable to his team”. The Tigers could miss the playoffs with or without Cabrera, but a player on a playoff team may have made the difference between them making the post season or not. It’s not a “best hitter” or “best player” award. Ernie Banks was said to be short changed because he was stuck on the Cubs his whole life.
The ROY, on the other hand, goes to the best rookie, not the most valuable to his team.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Andre Dawson

It's BABiP is unsustainably high, though

tough love!
But check out AJax’s line drive pct. he leads the league at 25.8%
If he keeps that kind of line drive pct, he’ll naturally have a higher BABiP

I'm just now reading SBNation's "scouting reports" on Tigers players
Miggy’s flaws: “Can get moody and a little surly at times.”
Are there any stats gurus out there
who could break down the Tiger record this year according to games we scored first vs. games where they scored first?
From game notes
Tigers score first: 36-21
Opponent scores first: 24-42

wow, the internet is friggin amazing.
I must have missed all of those 21 games we won scoring first.
I wonder if that's about normal for any team, or a particularly correlation for the Tigers?

holy crap
Don’t kill yourself, buddy.

There are 2 reasons I continue to watch this game
1. Wee Willie Rhymes’ pursuit of a 5 hit game
2. Verlander is still pitching
3. To see Jayson Nix catch a ball in the concessions area
(that 3rd one was an audible)

I was just going to say
who does he think he is, Brandon Inge?

"concession area" ? I thought it was the camera well?
I suppose Comerica is one big concession these days

That's what Nix is going to do for his next feat
After that, he’ll catch one in the parking lot

Leyland should have benched him for the rest of the season
you know, for his own good, to protect his nice average when he hits free agency!

I did not due to the 6 hr wait in line. I have a few friends that did.

Nix has decided that Don Kelly will not beat them
"It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time." --Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965)
It was so sad
When the Tigs were in NY and Don Kelly came up to bat, the only positive “stat” they could find to put on the scoreboard was that his sister Ashlee is a basketball coach at some midwestern college…I think that was what sparked him to hit a home run
that is a kind of cool family fact though

Would've been cool
If they put the Donbot pic up there.

Miggy's OPS is 1609 at target field this year.

I love watching Justin Verlander pitch
Especially when he is on his game. :)

At the risk of typing this too soon--
Friends, I notice that there’s a lot of dead leaves on my deck and driveway. What should I do to clean those off?
nothing
