Jason Beck: Casper Wells coming back to Detroit
On his blog, Beck tells us that Wells was pulled from today's lineup in Toledo and will be with the Tigers for tomorrow's game. His bat has heated up recently (he's hitting .354 this month), so maybe the big league club can take advantage of it.
No word yet on who's getting sent down, or whether another transaction is in the works; Beck is under the impression this is not related to a trade of any player.

Good to hear
Looking forward to seeing him back up

Good move
I think he’s finally adjusted to AAA (as far as contact goes) but I’m saying that without looking at the numbers. I’ll take a look tomorrow.

well firstinning.com has him at 24.4% strikeouts in August, but walk rate is up to 14%

The K rate will always be high
But the walk rate is a good sign. He’s probably overperforming on BABIP with the average, but I can see him walking 15% of the time in the Bigs. That, plus good speed and lots of power and good corner OF defense could make a good regular.
Of course, that depends on the walk rate staying high.

"Lots of power" seems overly optimistic

Half his hits go for extra bases.
He’s slugging .483 on the year despite having a low batting average of .233 (and bear in mind that singles contribute to the total bases that make up slugging percentage, so that does have an effect).

Not saying he's a banjo-hitter or anything
but a .489 SLG in 2,000 minor league PA doesn’t scream big-time power threat to me. Decent pop, but not game changing.

.489 SLG isn't anything to shake a stick at.

It's solid, for sure
But I question if he’ll approach that rate in the bigs. It should also be noted he hits a decent amount of triples, which are not indicitave of extra power, but rather speed. Doubles hit by a fast guy, if you will. While this is surely a good thing, it does inflate the SLG a bit.

Walk rate ticked up in July
To about 9.4% and up to 14% this month.
Also, 11.6 on the road and 3.9 at home. Weird split. I’d question the lights at Fifth Third, but that seems unnecessary.

To summarize
If he can keep the K rate at around 20-25% and the walk rate around 12-13, we’re golden. He plays a passable CF and a mean corner OF, too.

Also
His BABIP is about 30 points lower than normal, and considering the XBH are a good sign he’s making contact, his average should be more in the .260 area than the .230. That’d put his OBP up to an averageish .330.
Upside is probably .260/.350/.500 in the Majors, but that’s if everything breaks right.

How can you say his SLG/OBP upside at the highest level is higher than what he posted vs. inferior competition?
I understand the “if everything breaks right” qualifier, but even still that seems a touch too optimistic. Sign me up for .250/.330/.450. Given his speed and defense, that’s playable but I don’t see a future star here.

That's not bad either
He won’t be a star, but a good role player.

Hey! We agree!
I never said I think Casper will be bad, just not a star. He’s definitely useful.

Demotion candidates
Bullpen guys, IMO
Figaro, Schlereth, Perry, Enrique, Thomas, Bonine
Thomas would have to be DFA’ed, but no loss there
Perry has settled down and is pitching well
Bonine is doing pretty well in his long relief role
Schlereth has only reinforced the fact that he’s not ready for the majors yet
Enrique got shelled against Chicago, but hasn’t allowed a run in his last three games
If it was me, I’d send Schlereth back. But then, I would never have called him up.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Agreed
Option Schlereth and then bring him back with Weinhardt, Simons, et al when the 40 man expands. See who sticks in the bullpen and who doesn’t this year so we don’t have to next year.

Random comments not too far OT
- I could not see why they’d call up a pitcher with a 1.5 WHIP rate in AAA ball and expect he’d suddenly find his command in the majors
- Still puzzled by WTH they’re doing with (to) Sizemore, moving him all over hell’s half acre
- Still miffed by the presence of Peralta every time he plays shortstop. Do they even look at any advanced defensive metrics? Or just fielding percentage and “range factor”?
- Every season, we anticipate getting to see several players that have been having fine seasons in the minors, and every September, we’re miffed that only three or four players are called up, in addition to a couple of DL activations.
- I really, really want to see Zach Simons in Detroit
- I think one veteran late inning reliever this winter, and there is a good crop of them on the free agent market, then see what you can find among all the young guns in the system
- If I’m the GM, Dan Schlereth might be traded. Happy to have him and all his stuff, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll ever find the plate consistently. If I can turn him (or any other prospect not named Oliver or Turner) into an above average major league player that fills a need…… I’m there
- Casper may wells be the best fourth OF prospect in the system!
