Johnny Damon claimed by Red Sox: Updates
Original: In other news, Johnny Damon is rumored to have been claimed on waivers by a mystery team, according to media members and MLBTR. The Tigers have two days to work out a trade with the claimant, hand him over without getting anything in return, or pull him back. Damon has expressed interest in staying with the Tigers or coming back next year if they trade him, so it's anyone's guess what they will do now.
Update 3:30 p.m.: Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman tweets the Red Sox claimed Damon. He also states that the Red Sox are on Damon's no-trade list, complicated matters.
Update 4:50 p.m.: Damon told reporters he isn't sure what he'll decide yet, MLive's Steve Kornacki reports.
Update 5:20 p.m: MLB.com's Jason Beck has a bunch of quotes about the situation and a nice story. Go read it now. Money quote:
"The only reason why I would be considering it is to help out this team in the future," Damon said. "I love the Tigers organization and I love the fact that they're up-front and honest. If somehow they can get a good prospect back, a player that can help this team in the future, it would be beneficial for them."
The Tigers announced the corresponding move for Casper Wells' call up this afternoon; Enrique Gonzalez has been designated for assignment.

Hope they can get Damon back next year
I don’t have any evidence other than what I’ve observed, but he seems like a great intangibles kind of guy. Good attitude, seems to walk a lot/battle pitchers at the plate, etc.
I may be totally off since I can’t watch day to day down here in Ohio land, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him back again if they do rent him out for the rest of the year.
Is he a Type A still?
And i would assume he would accept arb, so draft picks really wouldn’t be in play for us.
So, maybe… if we can get someone decent in return (as in BUILD FOR THE FUTURE, and not that Pudge-for-Farnsworth-what?type ordeal), but yeah, it’s anyone’s guess what’s going to happen!

Damon is a "B"
so a sandwich round pick.
If they can trade for something with better potential than that, by all means go ahead.
by Kurt Mensching on Aug 23, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Comp Pick
I don’t know if that will actually be the baseline consideration for DD. It sounds like Damon would be looking for another one year deal so he doesn’t have any reason to turn down arbitration to allow the Tigers to receive the sandwich pick.
He's the highest ranked Type B player on the list. Could wind up an A or a B.
But the Tigers are not going to offer arbitration to Damon. The criteria used in arbitration weighs heavily in favor of veteran players. He gets money for his experience and salary history, and a player’s salary almost never goes down in arbitration. The chances that he’d accept are very strong, since he wants to return, and he’d get more money than he’d get on the open market for one season.

with his no trade clause
he can actually waive that if he chooses, right?
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
Correct
I’m not sure what would happen if he vetoed a deal and then the Tigers simply gave him to the Red Sox anyways.

I don't think they can
even if they claimed him on waivers, if he’s got a not trade deal, i don’t think the BoSox can take him unless he approves
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
NTC still applies
Still technically a trade, it’s just a trade for nothing in return
SI seems to be under the impression that if they can't reach a deal, the Tigers will just let him go

You know, that's kind of what I thought
Of course, my assessment is almost entirely based on him saying inappropriate things about Cabrera after last season. I wasn’t sure what the general feeling about him was at BYB.

to me it makes no sense to drop him
Its not like an Alex Rios situation where he’s making a ridiculous amount over the next couple of years.

they can stop paying immediately? or that 1.8 is something else?
I don’t get any of this!

1.8 million is the portion of Damon's $ 8 million annual salary that his new club would pay, saving the Tigers that amount
Dontrelle was traded with the stipulation that the Tigers would pay all but the pro rated portion of the major league minimum
Same with Nate
But Damon would be going with his new club picking up the full tab for the rest of the year. The Tigers would replace him on the roster, likely with a player making $ 400 K per year.

If they let him go, they save about 1.8 million for the rest of this season.

what would be the upside in that?

Just to make sure I understand...
The choices are now that Damon goes to the BoSox for something or nothing, or stays here, right? Can’t possibly end up on any other team now?
correct
it’s likely he’ll veto the whole thing, though, as the red sox are on his do not want list.

There's still a chance that another club, say the Black Sox, claim Damon and they'd have priority over Boston.
but yeah, the one club in the AL with the worst record that makes a claim has the priority, and that’s the only club that can get him.
It is also possible, though very unlikely, that the Tigers pull him back and waive him again in a couple days, but then the waivers are not revocable, and whatever team claims him gets him.

I believe Johnny Damon
until he speaks, I don’t frankly care. It’s just a lower-profile Brett Favre thing to me. Anyway, I’d like to see him stay if we can’t get anything for him. I don’t like the idea of offering arbitration though, as his skills are declining (BA w/ RISP anybody?) and he should be earning accordingly, but arb would probably net him more than he’s worth.
Side-note and a bit off-topic: I don’t think it’s necessarily his fault that his BA w/ RISP is lower. He’s been a table-setter his whole career, but he’s been forced into the 3-hole and run driver position with injuries/ineffectiveness of the team.
did Heyman say anything about whether JD wants to go to Boston?
2:51pm: Damon told Ed Price of AOL FanHouse he’s not inclined to go back to Boston (Twitter).

Ellsbury and Cameron are on the DL, but with big Papi firmly entrenched at DH, Damon would be a full time outfielder.
Boston knows that they could be stuck with him, but they’ll take that risk.

5.5 GB in the wild card with 37 games left, including lots against Tampa and NY, and Tampa vs NY. I think they’re a long shot, but weird stuff happens with those clubs.

which is why a claim to keep damon away
Makes more sense. I’m sure Theo was aware of the NTC, if he waives it great a guy that can help down the stretch, if not well then Tampa doesn’t get him either

South side Kenny isn't outta this thing yet, folks
It’s not the first claim that counts
It’s the team with the worst record in the AL that gets priority, and Chicago would have priority over Boston.

and if he claims him the Tigers withdraw it

Hey, I'd let Kenny give us some prospects if he wants.
Damon isn’t going to get them into the playoffs this year and obviously wouldn’t help them in the future, either.
They have ten days to trade him, and if they don't they put him on waivers
another team can take him, or if he clears, they can outright him to the minors
They may outright him with the promise that he’ll be recalled on September 1
That depends on whether they think he has a future with the Tigers.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Thanks, again.
I may just have to come stay with you at all trade deadlines.

Damon undecided on Boston
3:45pm: Damon hasn’t decided whether he’d accept an assignment to Boston, according to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, who notes that the outfielder has about 48 hours to make up his mind (Twitter link).
-—————————-
Now that makes it sound like the Tigers would indeed just let him go if he wanted.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Not according to the money quote above.
looks like he would only go if it were part of a deal – if he can be believed, and what reason do we have to doubt him? He loves Detroit.

I think that first, he wants to know that Boston really wants him to play, and not just to block a trade to TB or NY
He may want to come back to Detroit, but maybe he knows that only Detroit showed any real interest in him last winter. Certainly no other club was in the ball park money wise. It’s in his interest to want to be in Detroit, but what if the Tigers are moving on?
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
That doesn't sound like
something DD and crew would decide right now, even at a savings of 1.8 million. I just don’t see letting him go for nothing (besides the money) in return.

This article makes my head go owie
I don’t think I like this waiver thingy.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
More quotes- really interesting dilemma for Damon
“It’s probably as tough of a decision for me to make right now as it was for me to leave Boston for New York,” Damon said on Monday at Comerica Park, where he was in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Monday night’s game against Kansas City. “It’s something that, fortunately, we have some time to think about.”
48 hours, gotta decide before Wednesday’s game vs the Royals- his original team
“At this moment, I’m not sure I want to leave Detroit for that (outside shot at the playoffs),” Damon said. “I enjoy playing here. I enjoy the kids I’m playing for, the coaching staff. But obviously, [Red Sox manager] Terry Francona is amazing. But it’s something that I’m going to have think long and hard over.”
“I had a great time playing there,” Damon said. “But I think once it was apparent that I wasn’t a necessity to re-sign there, it started to get ugly. And that’s why I’ve got to think long and hard. I have to think if they do have a strong chance to make the playoffs with the guys beat up there. I have to think long and hard if I’m going to once again be probably one of the nicest guys in baseball, but be once again the most hated guy in baseball. That’s what it boils down. You guys see how I get booed in every ballpark already.”
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Really? Does he get booed?
I think he’s one of, if not THE nicest guy in baseball. he might get beat out by his (current, and hopefully, future) teammate Phil Coke.
he got loud cheers in NY, and (but?) they are a bunch of idiots!
