Oakland claims Jeff Larish off waivers
Another of the Tiger prospects that had been among the top five on their recent prospect lists is gone. The Oakland A's have claimed Jeff Larish off waivers from the Tigers. In return, Detroit gets nothing but the relatively modest waiver fee.
Larish was designated for assignment and placed on waivers to make room for Jeff Frazier. He was put through waivers last November as the Tigers prepared their roster for the Rule 5 draft, and he cleared withoug being claimed. That he wasn't traded indicates that no club was willing to give the Tigers value in return for Larish, who must now be placed on Oakland's 40 man roster.
Jeff has hit, and hit for power, at every level he's played. He adds about 100 points to his OBP above his average because of excellent plate discipline. He never was given a sustained shot at adjusting to the major leagues, just 10 AB's this year as an example. They moved him to third base and his defense was said to be pretty good there, but the moment Inge went on the DL, he was passed over for promotion by Sizemore, who hadn't played third base in years. I would like to have seen Jeff given a chance to play third base, and make the necessary adjustments at the plate, and see if he can bring a good portion of his numbers from Toledo to Detroit.
I think that Jeff can hit at the major league level if he is given the time to adjust that he was not given in Detroit. He has a very peculiar stance, where he stands motionless with his bat straight in the air, and his hat pulled down shading his eyes like beetle Bailey. If he has to trash that stance, it'll take some time. I think it takes a while for him to get his bat in motion from that position. I think that Leyland just didn't like his stance, and he didn't need to see any more.

Terrible shame
I really thought Jeff would eventually get a chance to play some 3B.

Got robbed by OAK
Larish can at least be a 4 corners defensive replacement. Ugh.

I wanted to see more of him at the MLB level -
Just to watch is dead man stance.
Ryan Raburn antagonist.
Scott Sizemore liberationist.
Agree w DT 100%
This was a great opportunity to give Jeff a REAL chance with a decent amount of PA. I fail to understand their methods at times.
Good for Larish
Bad for Detroit
Insert Sizemore for Larish
And you have my feelings on how he’s been handled.

What a stupid, stupid move
Don’t know why we had to make a move with the roster and make him available.

I really hope he ends up being good in OAK.
I don’t think it’ll happen, but he deserves that much. He got dragged around in our organization for quite some time without getting a fair opportunity to learn the game at the MLB level.

2nd time Larish had been DFA'd
No one picked him up after the first DFA back in december. Maybe he got screwed and couldve got more chances, but for whatever reason the tigers front office disagreed.
Jeff finished the season on the DL last year, and he was put through waivers with all the teams making moves for the rule 5 draft.
Teams are paring down their rosters after the season, getting down to 40- or fewer if they’d like to add a player in the Rule 5 draft. After the season, players on the 60 day DL have to be activated, and some get squeezed out. I’d have let Willis go, but that’s just me.
Wait til next year, again.
Meh. With the addition of Peralta, someone had to go.
Might as well have been the guy who couldn’t get PT.
Bye.
No feelings on him, but I wish we could have gotten something in return.

But really I did like Jeff Larish. I wonder who he pissed off >_>
Oakland calls up Larish
Chris Carter and Jeff Larish will be promoted from Triple-A Sacramento to join the A’s on Monday, according to a CSNBayArea.com report.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
I want both of those guys on this team right now
I’m still bitter that Larish was never given a real chance.
