Tigers to recall Robbie Weinhardt tomorrow
The Free Press's John Lowe -- confirmed by MLB.com's Jason Beck -- reported right-handed reliever Robbie Weinhardt will make a return to the major leagues Wednesday when the Tigers recall him.
Since being optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 20, he's made four appearances and thrown for six innings. He's allowed two hits, three walks, no runs and has seven strikeouts.
In 18 major league appearances he has an ERA of 9.17 (xFIP of 4.28), 11 strikeouts and four holds. He walked six in 17.2 innings.
Lowe speculates that the recall signals Alfredo Figaro will start in place of Jeremy Bonderman the next time through the rotation, leaving the Tigers a man short in the bullpen again.
More players could be brought up to the Tigers than just Weinhardt, but the Mud Hens' season still has about a week left, which could play into the timing of such matters.

At a minimum, I'd think that Alfredo has to be prepared to start for Bondo
and that’s enough to want another reliever in the pen.
I’d also think that Sizemore would get a call up. Not sure there will be many beyond that.
My guess is that Oliver goes back to the AFL. I’d like to see Zach Simons get a shot.
Keeping an eye toward the Rule 5 situation, I believe that the draft class of 2007, which includes Porcello, Worth, Putkonen, Crosby, Iorg, etc, would be Rule 5 eligible if not added to the 40 man roster by November 20th, anyway. Casey may get an extra year since he was drafted out of HS. Add Gagnier and Simons, and I think there are some decisions to be made. The departing free agents will free up some roster spots, at least temporarily, but most of those slots will have to be filled. I’m just waiting for DD to announce the pre-determined outcome of the Iorg watch.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
what the tigers should do based on stats
Great move on Weinhardt, but it didn’t take much since he is on 40 man. For the rule 5 risk, I’d rather have Putkonen, Iorg(since he shows SOME signs of hitting at a higher level—I’d ask him why, just like Casper Wells improved last year when he changed his stance), L.J.Gagnier, and Zach Simons vs. Dlugach and Frazier. The Tigers can replace the latter, but the former show great promise. Fu-Te Ni can also be replaced as Schlereth improves with work. Weinhardt/Schlereth/Simons has great potential. So far, Alfredo Figaro is improving from an almost elimination. Stats will tell over time. Even a cheap Bondo is space taken up for greater potential. As Mark A. said, “Jacob Turner is a stud.” I’m betting on Adam Wilk. If he were Rule 5 elgible, I’d protect him first.

If he's a Roomba, he can come on over to my place.
But seriously… after Alfredo’s first inning on Saturday, he wasn’t all that bad; early jitters, but didn’t make a fool of himself or anything. I’m fine with him starting again.
