2011 Pitching

Hey this is going to be about who will be in the starting rotation and the bullpen for 2011

Star-divide

Right now we have

Verlander

Scherzer

Bonderman

Porcello

Gallaraga

I think we have a great 1 2 for next year but after there is some concern. I think Porcello will improve and become the 3 as long as we dont get any above average pitcher.  Gallaraga can be the 5 because overall he is one of the best  number 5 starters in the AL.  I think we let Bondo go or maybe resign him for 2 years 10 mil to be a middle relief and spot starter kind of like Bonine.  Im hoping we can get a Ted Lilly or Hideki Kuroda as are 4 but who knows. This is what I think the starting rotation will look like.

Verlander

Scherzer

Porcello

FA pickup

Galaraga

I dont think Turner or Oliver are ready yet but maybe they will come up in the second half.

Now for the Bullpen.  I think Coke will be are main lefty and we will let Bobby Seay go.  I also say Valverde is are closer, Perry and Bonine are penciled in and also I think Minor will return as a middle relief guy.  Brad Thomas will be let go and I dont see Schlereth in the Majors next year maybe later in the season and also I think Robbie Weinhardt will earn a spot in there.  After that I hope the Tigers can add one good reliever maybe a veteran but it doesnt have to be.

So tell me your starting rotation and bullpen for 2011. Comment away.

Jorge de la Rosa a few times on here. I think he could be a viable FA pickup to help stregnthen the rotation

I agree with the four returnees, Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, and Galarraga.

There’s enough risk of a fail in that group right there. No need to add any more risk by holding a spot open just hoping for one of the young minor leaguers to step up and claim a spot. Although Bondo was just a fifth starter this season, what we need is a No. 2 or 3 starter.

Ten Free agents that I’d rather have than Bonderman, and ten I’d rather not have.

1. Cliff Lee (A)
2. Bronson Arroyo (A)
3. Carl Pavano (A)
4. Andy Pettite (A)
5. Ted Lilly (A)
6. Hiroki Kuroda (B)
7. Brandon Webb
8. Vicente Padilla (B)
9. Jorge DeLaRosa (B)
10. Javier Vazquez (A)

Jeremy Bonderman

11. Freddy Garcia
12. Kevin Millwood (B)
13. Eric Bedard
14. Jon Garland (A)
15. Kevin Correia (B)
16. Ben Sheets
17. Jeff Suppan
18. Jake Westbrook
19. Rich Harden
20. Aaron Harang

There are also potential trades for Matt Garza, Ricky Nolasco, and I’m sure others that we don’t yet know about. With $ 75 million coming off the payroll, and $ 34 mil of that spent on starting pitching, there’s no reason not to upgrade the rotation. It’s priority 1 this winter.

In the bullpen, I like the young guns in the system, but we really need one more veteran reliever for late inning duty. The list of free agents goes about 30 deep.

If you survived 2003, you can get through this!

Hope they fill starters roles internally

I like the rotation now minus Bonderman. The Free agents look mediocre after Lee, so I would Like to see them fill the spot with Coke, Oliver, Furbush, Wilk, or Turner, all who are potential stars.

I also like Bonine, Thomas, and Minor. They are just fine as long guy/spot starters.
Weinhart and Perry look good as setup guys, and Zumuya will be Back. Wouldn’t mind sticking it to the sox by signing Michigan Guys Putz and Thorntion if they are injury cheap and end up type B or less.

Tigers need a thumper at DH more than a pitcher, and it sure would be nice to trade for a younger position player superstar like Hanily Ramirez.

A few points on the rotation

- I like what the Tigers have in the system for the long term, but no way I would reserve a spot in the rotation for them in 2011. There is no reason to, with $ 75 million coming off the books and $ 34 million of that presently allocated to starting pitchers. Oliver is yet unable to command his breaking stuff, Turner is a couple seasons away, and Charlie Furbush is untested.

I agree that the FA market gets thin after Cliff Lee, and the Yankers will probably give him a sick amount of money, but I see no internal options that are adequate, and there are still enough questions with Galarraga and Porcello. Pavano is said to be hard pressed to get more than a one year deal. I’d think about one year with an option for a second. Also think about Brandon Webb if he’s healthy. Something like the two year deal given to Kenny Rogers in 2006.

Then, we know that DD likes to make trades rather than sign free agents. No telling what can be had via trades, but there are always a few pitchers that surprisingly change teams. Maybe a Matt Garza or Ricky Nolasco can be had.

I’d add one veteran arm for the bullpen also. The list of available relievers is long.

If you survived 2003, you can get through this!

Where did you hear that Oliver has problems commanding secondary stuff?

Tom Gage seems to think he’s breaking with the Tigers next year, and Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus has praised his advances.

$75 million probably won't all be spent

They lost 29 Million last year, worst financials by far in baseball, and this year’s bottom line will be about the same. Plus raises to Verlander and a couple others are around $8 Million, if my memory serves me. By not signing anyone and filling holes from within, they might break even over a 3 year period, ending next year.

I like Garza alot and agree about veteran bullpen arm especially if Coke goes to the rotation. (JL talking about possible move next spring, on pregame JL show Saturday, DD had suggested it when trade was made, and Jim Price talks about it quite a bit, reffering to arsenal).

Enjoy reading everyone’s posts.

Agreed - Don't promote here

I agree with Tigerdog’s assessment of our prospects: Oliver, Furbush, Turner. We shouldn’t see Turner until September, if then. Furbush is unproven and Oliver could probably still use some time on the farm. Besides, a 5-man rotation rarely makes it through the season without injury. I’d sign a proven #3 or 4 (like a guy from Tigerdog’s list above) and push Perfecto back to #5. If Oliver is the most ready, he can fill in when there is injury or when we need a spot starter. We need some depth in our rotation. If Oliver comes up and lights it up in an injury-need situation, he can push out the most ineffective of our starters.

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

by momotigers on Sep 6, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Are L.J.Gagnier, Adam Wilk. and Thad Weber in the same catagory as Furbush or do you rate them as more unproven? Personally, I rate Wilk as the biggest sleeper in the system. Schlereth is no longer a sleeper in the RP catagory as I’m hoping the minuscule sample awakened the right people.

by StephenGrosberg on Sep 21, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Good question

I’d do this:

RH Verlander
RH Scherzer
LH Oliver
RH Porcello
RH Pavano

Pavano is a solid innings-choming #4, and we have depth in the system in Galarraga and Furbush that can replace him if he gets injured. Oliver has made some really good strides forward, and while winter ball might not be a horrible idea, I can see him breaking camp. With Porcello, we’re going to have to pray he doesn’t struggle (I’m still suspicious of his results) but he at least has the potential and a good floor.

What's wrong with Armando?

I’d rather see Oliver continue to improve and provide depth. Armando has kept the team in the game for a large portion of 2010. Do you know if Armando has an option left?

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

I see Oliver as a higher upside player than Armando.

I do not know about the option, though.

Agree with upside comment

Oliver has potential to be a stronger MLB pitcher, but it’s hard to say if he will be in 2011. I think Armando’s upside is his 2008 year, but I think that what he did this year is the pitcher he will consistently be. When we are figuring our #5 starter, I would take Armando’s resume over Olivers…at least while we are in contention.

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

by momotigers on Sep 6, 2010 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Pavano is capable of returning to N.Y. Yankee form. I’d rather work with Oliver and test L.J.Gagnier/Figaro/Weber/Wilk/Furbush, while Cole Nelson shows up in Erie. Maybe Brooks Brown can surprise in the AFL.

by StephenGrosberg on Sep 21, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Pavano = Defense

I’d sign Pavano just to keep him from pitching against us. He’s looking like the SP version of Jim Thome: Always in the AL Central and always beating up on Detroit.

(While we’re playing free agent defense, sign Jim Thome…what the heck?)

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

Seriously, Jim Thome on a 1 year deal to DH, Maggs can play RF for another year and get Pavano for the rotation.

But I don’t think Leyland likes having a full time DH.

There are many DH possibilities from within including Andy Dirks, a 100% Ryan Strieby, Rawley Bishop, Casper Wells. Even Billy Nowlin is worth a promotion to Toledo to see. Nowlin or Bishop should take Max Leon’s space at Toledo. Baseball is a game of trial and error, not deterred by scouting reports. The strategy is to make MAiXIMUM use of Spring Training and the AFL. Who knows, maybe Jacob Turner could have a Spring that tempts Toledo for the Tigers in June. As you know, my suggestions assume no $ to spend. I pointed out Coke in 2008 when I saw his Yankee very brief season. I loved them wanting Granderson. The Tigers were MOST smart to determine who THEY wanted. I’ll always consider a trade for one of ours, when we have a surplus at the position and THEY want him.

by StephenGrosberg on Sep 19, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's my staff, 2011:

Verlander
Scherzer
Free Agent (one from the top of Tigerdogs’ list above)
Porcello
Gallaraga

*Oliver and Furbush are sitting in AAA Toledo, waiting for injury or spot starts. I’d take Oliver over Furbush, but maybe Furbush is pitching better than Oliver next year.

The bullpen needs help, it makes my head hurt to think about it.

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

Don't let it hurt too badly

The three names at the top of my list are Grant Balfour, Scott Downs, and……Koji Uehara (seriously look at the numbers). Balfour and Uehara are currently Type Bs, while Downs is solidly in Type A territory.

Give me Balfy or Uehara

Especially Uehara… he’s probably undervalued. No way I touch Downs lest he doesn’t get offered arbitration.

Dan Schlereth and Weinhardt will produce and Adam Wilk could be a middle RP. He’s done it before. In my opinion, he only has to be tried.

by StephenGrosberg on Sep 21, 2010 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

well hope they trade for that starter

b/c after cliff lee and Petitte that list of FA’s, Stinks. They are either Career or 2010 over 4 ERA. I don’t view any of them as an improvement over Bonderman who will most likely regain some velocity next year, if he doesn’t retire.

If they Gonna remortgage the future, they should get someone who really makes a difference, a bonna fide star, like a Felix Hernadez.

by Hack Johnson on Sep 6, 2010 2:29 PM EDT reply actions

If the Rays are dumping salary this offseason James Shields is a bit pricey for them. Promote Oliver and Furbush and rotate them at 5 and LR. Save the arms and get valuable experience.

by cheapbob on Sep 6, 2010 7:06 PM EDT reply actions

I don't know that they would dump his this offseason

He’s having a really unlucky year, and his salary only goes up by like 2 million next season. They have great cheap options on their way up, but I don’t think they’ll sell low on Shields when he’s having a bad year and isn’t going to break their backs with his salary.

2012 is when he gets kinda pricey (for them), and even then it’s not that bad.

Getting him would be a great move for Detroit, though :)

De Larosa for #4

as ive mentioned a few times i think hes a good fit ( left hander we need) seems like type DD would like, Lefty vs Twins very much needed. IMO he’ll be better in the future than he is now. I agree w /Tigerdog list on options over Bondo (not in order ranked tho) id add Harden and Bedard? if and big IF healthy. of course C. Lee is still #1 option.

I'm assuming you're talking about Michael *Cuddyer*

And I’ve got a hell no for that. He’s going to make 10.5 million next season, he’s a league average bat at a corner OF spot, and he plays godawful defense. No no no.

Take a flyer, but bump the price up for Lee

If Oliver or Jacob progress nice and join the team in the second half, then take a flyer on an ex-star that doesn’t have shoulder problem. If Bonderman needs to throw better next spring for him to get sign. Throw a lot of cash at Lee and afterall Comerica is a nice park to pitch in.

by Barry2 on Sep 10, 2010 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

I want to find pitchers from the following to provide 1 starter and the rest RP: Adam Wilk, Thad Weber, L. J. Gagnier, Brayan Villarreal, and Zach Simons. Spring Training and the AFL, Winter League will help me decide as to which ones. They showed me enough this year to be considered. Robbie is my #3 RP ahead of Perry. Galarraga makes it. The prospects plus Alfredo Figaro are pickings for the starter or a Bonine type.
