Carlos Guillen likely done for the season
Per Tom Gage on his Detroit News blog:
Unless he can start participating in baseball activities by the end of this week, which the Tigers don't anticipate will happen, the deep bruise in his left knee that landed him on the disabled list on Aug 17 will cost him the rest of the season.
I would bet on Guillen being the starting 2B on opening day 2011, playing some 2B, some DH, and some DL next season. Just one more season at $ 13 million, and the last of DD's "bad contracts" that will be on the books next year. They'll get through it.

Tigers trainer says Guillen’s season just about done. He’d have to start baseball activities this wk to have a shot. Will see doctor Thurs.

Some DL
Haha he is a utility player.
My dad was at Game 5 of the 1984 World Series. I was born that year. Apparently I need to have a kid for them to win another one.
The Tigers need to take out an insurance policy on Guillen's entire body.
Actually, while they’re at it, take out a policy on all the space 5 feet around him too.
Eh, shorten it to a 3 foot radius.
That is his max range, right?

I said it before:
A dead cat has more range than Guillen (and costs less)
Ryan Raburn antagonist.
Scott Sizemore liberationist.
This guy needs to finish his career as a DH
Guillen is looking like he is trying out to play the part of Mr. Glass in “Unbreakable 2”. THis guy is just too fragile to play any position anymore. Keep him as a DH and utilize what is left of his bat next year.
I'll take that bet
Unless Dunn happens, I’ll say he starts 2011 as DH. There are worse things than a DH who can be a bad, but reasonable, glove anywhere except C and CF. If he can’t hit as a DH, he’s gotta get released.
the problem with Guillen as a DH
is once again that there are a limited number of vacancies for the Tigers to get a No.2, 3, and 5 hitter, and DH is the most likely place to find one of those guys. Catchers, 3B and SS that can bat in one of those slots are relatively rare, so it’s likely that those spots are filled by a DH and OF. If you’re bringing back any of Inge, Peralta, Avila, Boesch/ Raburn, and putting them in a starting role, each is one less place to find hitters for those key slots. Sure, Carlos will DH some, but the DH is a primo spot to get a hitter to protect Cabrera, and while I like Carlos, I think we need a more reliable bat to protect our MVP slugger.

He will hit.
Hes a big league hitter that knows the strike zone and works counts. Above average hitter that will play between 100 -140 games.
when you total 2010-2011 right?

he won't see that many games next season
he cannot stay healthy long enough. Although I know it won’t happen, I think it would be in the best interest of the Tigers if they released him.
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
Guillen games by year:
2006: 153
2007: 151
2008: 113
2009: 81
2010: 68
I don’t see what makes you think that’s going to reverse, it’s not like his injuries are of the fluke variety.

interesting
if you average out the 5 season total it comes up to 113 games. If you take away the first 2 seasons (where I am assuming he stayed fairly healthy) and average the last three seasons it drops to 87 games. So in the last three seasons he’s averaged playing 87 games for $12 to $13M per season. I’m with Kurt, I don’t look for that number to improve.

Guillen is well past the days where 100 games is plausible.
Ryan Raburn antagonist.
Scott Sizemore liberationist.
As much as I respect and appreciate Guillen as a LHH, not a RHH when he’s 100 , he takes up space from Rhymes/Raburn/Wells/Dirks/Douglas. He and Damon is just too much for me to handle. If he goes DL, it’ll be easy to decide what to do. I don’t wish it for obvious reasons, but am ready for the DL if he’s not at least 80. Guillen at 80-90% will win games. I’d do a "Nate Robertson " with him for a decent AA player in an instant. Dirks/Douglas + Raburn/Wells/Rhymes vs. Damon/Guillen is just TOO good a potential to deny a try. Why Douglas/Dirks is not going to the AFL is completely beyond me!!!. Look it how the Twins and White Sox, especially the Twins brought up players recently that couldn’t carry the gym bags of the players listed above. The Tigers didn’t even plan for rule 5 by exchanging Frazier/Dlugach for Gagnier/Simons. No guts!!! Cabrera is an OUTSTANDING player, not a MVP this year.

Is retirement an option?
I like Carlos as a player and a Tiger. He has a consistent bat from both sides of the plate, a decent glove and can play several positions. Unfortunately, his body has let him (and the Tigers) down over the last 3 years. It may be time for Carlos to accept the inevidible and call it a career. Has there been a 30 game stretch in the last 3 years that he was healthy? What is the next injury- knee, shoulder, elbow, hand, quad, calf, hip, back…? Shall I go on? I have enjoyed watching him, but it’s like watching my 15 year old lab grow older by the minute. There are some times when it’s better to do the humane thing and make the call.
he won't retire
too much ego.
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
Too much money. He gets $ 13 million which is lost if he retires.
I still believe that Carlos can and will contribute to the Tigers in 2011. He may spend time at DH, or on the DL, and at least we have a couple of options to fill in for him, but even as he limps along, he can handle a bat most days when he’s in the lineup, and he doesn’t make a total fool of himself in the infield. A healthy Carlos Guillen is an asset to the team. Not worth $ 13 million, but that money is spent at this point, so let’s get what we can out of him and put that $ 13 million to good use in 2012.

my first instict with guillen
is ego. He’s got plenty of money
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
Ego? This is a player that put up no fuss when asked to move from shortstop to first, from first to third, from third to left field, from left field to DH and from DH to second base!
The fact is that he gets paid the full value of the contract that he and Dombrowski negotiated, but if he quits, he doesn’t get paid. You or I wouldn’t walk away from $ 13 million, either. He wants to play baseball because that’s what he does, and he does it well when he’s healthy.
If you survived 2003, you can get through this!
Of course he don't say anything when they ask him to move
he thinks he can play anywhere because of his ego. and I know how his contract works. I never said anything about him quiting, the other poster did. I know he doesn’t get paid if he quits. AND he’ll play as long as his EGO will allow it.
I'm going down with this ship. I may as well, I got nothin' better to do.
He'll play through 2011
Ego or not, that’s as long as other MLB teams (including Detroit) will allow a player to cash paychecks and occupy a roster spot for 60 games a year of production. If he doesn’t play over 100 games in 2011, I doubt he wills sniff a contract of more than a year and more than 1 or 2M.
Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.
