Grady Sizemore Anyone?

So, lets say that Magglio hits .270 with 15 HR's and 90 RBI's. Thats good, but not great for the stellar #3 hitter. Then, because of these down numbers and his age, he decides to retire and spend more time with his family. Meanwhile, about 250 miles southeast, Grady Sizemore had his first full season back from his injuries and surgeries, and hit .265 or so with no backup, with 30 HR's and 90 RBI's playing for the Indians. At the same time he is getting pretty expensive, with his option staring Cleveland in the face. Could Detroit possibly swing a deal for the lefty? He would fill two gaps: in right field, and a middle of the order lefty with pop. This is just speculation, but why wouldn't the Tigers have interest? What are your thoughts? Sizemore's numbers have really fallen of the last couple years.

He is coming back from micro-fracture surgery this year, and his #‘s have really fallen of the last couple of years. You would have to see how he dose this year. But i have watched him a lot since i live close to Cleveland, and he dosen’t look like the same player he use to be.It could just be his injurys, but i don’t think he will ever be that good again.

His 2010 was a washout

but his 2009, even with a bad groin/elbow was not horrible. I am looking forward to seeing how Grady Bounces Back

Ben I would be willing to bet you $1000 that Magglio hits over .300

even when he was a rookie he’s never had a full season where he hit under .282. .270 is lowballing for him. Even though he’s aging, he’s always had a good eye, knows how to draw a walk and put the ball in play. I also think Grady Sizemore will do just fine upon his return to the Indians and I’d also be willing to bet they plan on keeping him. They would be wise to build a team around Sizemore, Choo and Cabrera

I disagree

about the Tribe keeping or building around Sizemore… as far back as I can remember, I do not recall them signing someone to a long term deal… he will be gone either before, or when he hits free agency…

Oh and I think their main building block is going to be Santana along with Choo and Astrubal

you could be right

only time will tell. But it wouldn’t surprise me if he stays in Cleveland. He belongs to them through this season with a club option for 2k12. If he performs well, i could see them picking up that option and signing him to a few more seasons.

also they signed him in 2l6 through 2k11

that’s kind of a long term deal, isn’t it?

The Indians have made a habit of siging young players through their arbitration years

and maybe a season or two into their potential free agency years. But after that, they’re outta there.

If you survived 2003, you can get through this!

A GM would be silly not to "look into" any good player that's available

But of course the big question is, at what cost? Grady would not be cheap, either in terms of salary, or trade chips. He makes 7.667 Million in 2011, then has an 8.5MM option for 2012 with a 500 K buyout. Reasonable if he produces like he did when healthy.

I wouldn't give up

anyone who figures into the 2011 lineup, or any of my top 15ish prospects to get him, but as a pure salary dump, sure.
My other thought is that if that Cleveland does shop him there are other teams willing to give up a lot more than the tigers should, i.e. the Angels.
His value is so low right now Cleveland would seem to be way better off hoping he turns things around and trying to awing him to a contender closer to the deadline.

One of three things happens

He bounces back nicely, making the 8.5M option a no-brainer for the Tribe or

He is still injured and ineffective…then they can keep him or

He’s playing well this year at the trade deadline. With the affordable option for next year, Cleveland trades him to a contender in need of CF (or a corner OF) for lots of good prospects since the acquiring club would get a good CF this year and a good deal next year. This would cost a boat load of propects and I hope we’re not in need of the OF that badly at the trade deadline.

Granderson was my Tiger, then Sizemore, then Willis. Since they're all gone, I'm taking Raburn and hoping the pattern holds.

If traded

the Team Option becomes a player option. If he’s playing well and gets traded odds are he opts out of the 9 mil option in 2012.

From the Indians perspective, it’d be best to trade him in Jan, 2012 to a team that can have him for the entire 2012 season and have time to negotiate an extension with him.

I didn't know that about the option

Is that true with all team options or is it specific to Sizemore’s contract?

Just Grady's Contract

The option is listed as 8.5 right now, but its already up to 9 based on reaching a prior incentive.

You can read the contract specifics on Cot’s or here

No

I feel like this is a wonderful opportunity to spend full price for a guy who should be deeply discounted.

I doubt they sell Choo

They’ve got to give their fans something to cheer for. They’re talking extension with Choo.

yes, but there is no way they afford him after his arbitration years… they’ll have to sell him at some point

Sizemore in AAA?

The only thing I noticed about the port was 250 mi SW (not SE) which makes Grady an Indy Indian instead of a Cleveland Indian. Is he actually projected to spend time in the minors, or was this a typo?

err... "post", not "port"

not too great at typing on the netbook…
